Council Grounds State Park Group Campground Introduce
If you're a local resident in Wisconsin searching for "camping near me" and seeking a picturesque natural setting with ample space and recreational opportunities, Council Grounds State Park Group Campground, located in Merrill, WI 54452, USA, offers a compelling option. While the name includes "Group Campground," individual campsites are also available within Council Grounds State Park, and the positive reviews highlight features that would appeal to a wide range of campers, not just large groups.
Recent visitors have consistently praised the beauty of Council Grounds State Park, particularly noting the stunning fall foliage during October. This makes it an ideal destination for local users looking to immerse themselves in the vibrant colors of the changing leaves. The park boasts "plenty of trails to walk," catering to hikers of all levels who wish to explore the scenic landscapes. Additionally, the opportunity for "playing down by the river" suggests that the park offers access to water for recreation, whether it's for leisurely enjoyment of the riverbank or engaging in water-based activities.
One of the standout features mentioned in the reviews is the spaciousness of the campsites. Guests have noted that the sites are "large" with "plenty of space between you and your neighbors," providing a sense of privacy and tranquility that enhances the overall camping experience. This is a significant advantage for those who value a secluded and peaceful environment while enjoying the outdoors. Council Grounds State Park offers both "electric sites" and "primitive sites," catering to different camping preferences and needs. For those requiring electricity for their RVs or other devices, it's important to note that Wisconsin State Parks, including Council Grounds, do not allow generators. Therefore, securing an electric site is essential for power needs.
In terms of facilities, the park provides a "dump station with potable water," which is a valuable amenity for RV campers. For restroom facilities, there are "pit toilets in areas," which are common in more rustic camping settings. However, the park also offers "clean, free showers," which is a significant convenience and often a welcome feature for campers looking to freshen up after a day of outdoor activities.
Another reviewer highlighted the "beautiful trails near the Grandfather Falls section of the Ice Age Trail" as a major attraction of Council Grounds State Park. The Ice Age National Scenic Trail is a renowned long-distance trail that follows the edge of the last glacier in Wisconsin, offering diverse and scenic hiking opportunities. The proximity to the Grandfather Falls section, known for its impressive waterfalls, adds significant appeal for hikers and nature enthusiasts. These trails are described as being "supported by nice big private campsites," reinforcing the earlier point about spaciousness and privacy. The reviewer also mentioned "new bathrooms" and "single-stall lockable showers," indicating recent upgrades to the facilities, which contribute to a more comfortable and secure experience for campers.
An interesting point raised in one of the reviews is the "very poor" cell service within the campsites. While this might be a drawback for those who need to stay connected, it can also be seen as a "pro" for those seeking a true escape from technology and the distractions of modern life. For those times when connectivity is necessary, the reviewer noted that the area near the shelter house offers shoreline benches and picnic tables where a signal can be found, encouraging visitors to "check in quickly" and then return to enjoying the natural surroundings through activities like "hiking, biking, picnicking, fishing, canoeing and kayaking." This suggests that Council Grounds State Park is well-suited for a variety of outdoor recreational pursuits.
The park is also described as a "good park for relaxing and watching the squirrels collect pine cones," highlighting the peaceful and natural ambiance that allows for simple enjoyment of the environment. This reinforces the idea that Council Grounds State Park is an excellent choice for local users seeking a tranquil retreat in nature.
For local users searching for "camping near me," Council Grounds State Park Group Campground (and the wider state park) offers a range of appealing features: beautiful natural scenery, especially during the fall; spacious and private campsites with options for electric and primitive camping; access to scenic hiking trails, including the Ice Age Trail near Grandfather Falls; opportunities for river-based activities like canoeing and kayaking; and clean, free showers. The availability of a dump station with potable water is a significant convenience for RV campers. The limited cell service in the campsites can be viewed as a chance to disconnect and fully immerse oneself in the natural environment.
While the provided information does not include specific promotional offers, Wisconsin State Parks often have established fees for camping and vehicle admission. Local users can find detailed information about these fees, as well as make reservations, through the official Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) website. It is advisable to check the DNR website for the most up-to-date pricing and availability, especially during peak seasons like the fall when the foliage is a major draw.
In conclusion, Council Grounds State Park Group Campground, located near Merrill, WI, offers a beautiful and well-maintained natural environment for local users seeking "camping near me." With spacious campsites, access to hiking trails (including the scenic Ice Age Trail near Grandfather Falls), opportunities for river activities, and clean facilities, it provides a great setting for a relaxing and enjoyable outdoor experience. Council Grounds State Park Group Campground Reviews
Beautiful! Came here in October and the changing leaves were incredible. Plenty of trails to walk and playing down by the river is great. The sites are large and plenty of space between you and your neighbors. There are electric sites or primitive sites. Wisconsin does not allow generators in any of their state's parks so if you need electricity, make sure you get an electric site. It has a dump station with potable water also. There are pit toilets in areas and clean, free showers as well.

Cell service is very poor in the campsites (both a pro and a con!) but when you have to connect, the area near the shelter house has shoreline benches and picnic tables where you can check in--just remember to check out quickly for hiking, biking, picnicking, fishing, canoeing and kayaking. (Or just bring a good book!) This is a good park for relaxing and watching the squirrels collect pine cones.
