Marathon Park Campground Introduce
Looking for "camping near me" in Wausau, Wisconsin? Marathon Park Campground, located in Wausau, WI 54401, USA, offers a local camping option. To provide an objective introduction for local users, we've compiled insights from recent customer reviews available online to give you a balanced perspective on what to expect.
Based on recent feedback, the environment of Marathon Park Campground is described by one reviewer as a "quiet pine forest," which suggests a potentially pleasant and natural setting for those seeking a quieter camping experience. This could appeal to local users looking for a peaceful escape close to home. The presence of a pine forest often implies shaded campsites and a generally natural ambiance.
However, the reviews also highlight some significant concerns regarding the services and facilities at Marathon Park Campground. One camper who visited in September reported that the men's bathroom was locked. This raises questions about the accessibility of essential facilities for all campers. Additionally, this reviewer noted that self-registration requires cash payment, which is an important point for prospective visitors to be aware of. They also mentioned that reservations for less than two days were not accepted at the time of their visit.
Another reviewer expressed considerable dissatisfaction with the cleanliness of the bathrooms. They described the bathrooms as "disgusting," alleging that they appeared to have not been cleaned for a long time, with mentions of feces on the toilets and numerous spiders. The showers were also described as "disgusting" and lacking hot water. This reviewer recounted observing a Marathon Park employee and two other individuals attempting to enter the men's bathroom but not actually going inside to clean. While these individuals reportedly entered the women's bathroom, the reviewer's wife indicated that no cleaning had occurred there either. These comments raise serious concerns about the hygiene and maintenance of the campground's restroom facilities.
In terms of features beyond the natural environment and basic facilities, one reviewer noted that while the park looked "nice," there was a perceived issue with homeless individuals and drug addicts walking through the park. They reported seeing people who appeared to be under the influence of drugs passing through the campground at night. This is a significant safety and comfort concern that potential visitors should consider.
Considering these reviews, the features of Marathon Park Campground appear to be somewhat mixed. The quiet pine forest environment could be a positive feature for those seeking a natural setting. However, the reported issues with locked and unclean bathrooms, lack of hot water in the showers, the cash-only self-registration, the two-day minimum for reservations (at least at the time of one review), and concerns about individuals passing through the park raise significant drawbacks.
There is no promotional information provided in the reviews. Local users interested in Marathon Park Campground would need to weigh the potentially pleasant natural setting against the reported issues with facilities and security based on these recent experiences. It would be advisable to seek more current information from other sources or potentially contact the local authorities or park management for clarification on the concerns raised in the reviews.
In summary, Marathon Park Campground in Wausau, WI, offers a camping experience within a "quiet pine forest." However, recent reviews highlight potential issues including locked and unclean bathrooms, lack of hot water, a cash-only self-registration process, a two-day minimum reservation policy (as of September of the reviewed period), and concerns about the presence of homeless individuals and drug activity within the park. For local users looking for "camping near me," it's crucial to consider these points when deciding if Marathon Park Campground meets your needs. It might be beneficial to look for more recent reviews or contact the relevant authorities for an update on the conditions and services at the campground before planning a visit.

Marathon Park Campground Reviews
Quiet pine forest. Went in September and mens bathroom was locked? Also need cash for self registration. They did not take reservations for less than 2 days. Park was almost empty on a Sunday night.
Sep 21, 2023 · Pam MillerNice looking park but the bathrooms are disgusting. The bathrooms appear to have not been cleaned for a very long time with feces on all the toilets and spiders everywhere. The showers are disgusting as well with no hot water. During our stay I saw a Marathon Park employee and 2 other guys (1 carrying a toilet brush) attempt to get into the men's bathroom but did not go in. I assumed they were there to clean the bathrooms but they did not go into the men's bathroom at all. They did go into the women's bathroom but came right back out in a few seconds. My wife advised that nothing had been cleaned inside the bathroom after they had left. The park is very nice looking except for the homeless people and drug addicts walking through the park. There are people walking through the park at night that appear to be on drugs.
Jul 13, 2024 · Ryan BI hate to write this review. The campground is a great location. That is the positive. On the negative side I have several things. Most of the sites are only electric, you will have to put water on. That is not a big deal as the price per night will definitely compensate you for this. You can't have a campfire. This can be a big deal for many people. The reason i have given this campground a three star review though is for the staffing/hosting. I have camped her several times in the last two years. Last year, we were enjoying an evening with friends listening to music, when the camp host came over at 8 pm to ask us to turn the music down as there were camper that needed to fish early in the morning the next day. Quiet time was listed as 10pm and we really didn't have our music that loud. We obliged and my friends left, all was good. This year, we came back from the dinner to find a tree down across the roadway. It had stormed while we were gone and we were concerned about our site. We had stopped to talk to a camper when the same host pulled up beside us and asked us to leave in a not so kind tone. I was kind and did back my truck up to find another way to my site. Overall this is a nice place in a great location with not so great hosts and really bad bathrooms (Left that one for the end).
Jul 19, 2022 · Brandon SchopfPre-register only via website. The website doesn’t work properly. No same-day reservation allowed. This is not a destination type parkwhere you’re going to make plans to stay there in advance.
Jul 22, 2024 · Jim ClaytonSmall campground close to downtown Wausau. The camp sites are under huge white pine trees, so plenty of shade. They do tend to drip sap onto your rig and car. No satellite and limited local tv stations. No campfires allowed. There are only two 50 amp sites: Site #16 and #25. No water or sewer, but there is a dump station. Sites are close together, best big rig sites are closer to Stewart Ave., sites 16, 22-25, 27. Nice showers. Great bike trail downtown along the river. Another great bike trail is the Green Circle in Stevens Point, 30 miles south of Wausau.
