Topsy Campground

Topsy Campground, Keno, OR 97627, USA

4.0
Great, clean, campsite with fairly large paved sites with picnic tables & fire pits. There’s also 2 clean vault toilets, potable water spigots, and a boat ramp with dock. Three sites are next to the water but all have a view. The water is not great for swimming since it is overgrown with algae, but, it’s nice for boating, fishing, and kayaking. The reservoir is great for bird watching too. I saw a bald eagle catch a fish. Also some hawks, pelicans, and lots of birds I didn’t know. The week days are very quiet and peaceful. The weekend was noisy with the usual entitled knuckleheads who only care about themselves. Respect only goes one way with those kind of people. There is a bit of noise from hunting, 4 wheelers, and bikes in the area.Overall, big recommend. I will be back! - Jack Rondini

Topsy Campground Introduce

Looking for "camping near me" in Southern Oregon? Topsy Campground, located in Keno, OR 97627, USA, and reachable at (541) 883-6916 or +1 541-883-6916, offers a camping experience with some notable features and a recently altered water environment. Based on customer reviews, the campground presents a mixed picture that local users should be aware of when considering a visit.

Environment:

According to an older review, Topsy Campground boasted fairly large paved campsites, each equipped with picnic tables and fire pits. The presence of a reservoir allowed for water views from all sites, with three sites being directly next to the water. This environment was noted as being great for boating, fishing, and kayaking, although the water was described as overgrown with algae, making it less suitable for swimming. The reservoir was also highlighted as an excellent spot for bird watching, with sightings of bald eagles, hawks, pelicans, and various other birds. Weekdays were reportedly quiet and peaceful. However, a more recent review from January 30, 2024, indicates a significant change in the water environment. Due to dam removals, the once thriving water area is now gone, leaving only a small stream. This has resulted in the absence of water for migrating birds and the loss of water-based recreational opportunities. The reviewer also noted a smell of dead fish and dead algae, and the absence of migrating birds during what should have been peak season. Additionally, the older review mentioned some noise from hunting, 4-wheelers, and bikes in the general area.

Services:

The services at Topsy Campground, based on the earlier review, include two clean vault toilets and potable water spigots. The presence of a boat ramp with a dock suggests facilities for those interested in boating and fishing. Each campsite was equipped with a picnic table and a fire pit. The more recent review does not comment on the general campground services but focuses primarily on the altered water situation. Therefore, it can be assumed that the basic infrastructure of campsites, toilets, and water spigots likely remains, though the primary attraction of the reservoir for recreation and wildlife has been significantly impacted.

Features:

Previously, key features of Topsy Campground included its paved and fairly large campsites, each with a picnic table and fire pit, the boat ramp and dock for accessing the reservoir, and the potential for bird watching. The water access facilitated boating, fishing, and kayaking, despite the algae. The proximity of some sites to the water and the water views from all sites were also notable features. However, the most significant recent development is the loss of the reservoir due to dam removals, as reported in January 2024. This means that the features related to a thriving body of water, such as boating, significant fishing opportunities, and prime bird watching on a reservoir, are no longer as they were described in the older review. The remaining small stream may still offer some natural appeal, but the overall landscape and recreational possibilities related to a larger water body have changed drastically.

Promotional Information:

For local users looking for "camping near me" in the Keno, Oregon area, Topsy Campground still offers clean campsites with paved areas, picnic tables, and fire pits, along with vault toilets and potable water. If you value these basic camping amenities, Topsy Campground might still be a consideration. However, it is crucial to be aware of the significant change in the water environment. The reservoir that was once a central feature for boating, fishing, and bird watching is now gone, replaced by a small stream. This will undoubtedly impact the overall experience, especially for those interested in water-based activities and wildlife viewing related to a larger body of water. While the weekdays were previously noted as quiet and peaceful, potential noise from hunting, 4-wheelers, and bikes in the area might still be a factor. Given the substantial alteration of the landscape, local users might want to manage their expectations regarding water-related recreation and bird watching at Topsy Campground. If a clean and equipped campsite is your primary need, and you are aware of the changed water situation, Topsy Campground could still serve as a base for exploring the surrounding area. It would be advisable to contact the campground at (541) 883-6916 or +1 541-883-6916 for the most current information on the campground and the surrounding environment before planning your trip.

In conclusion, Topsy Campground offers clean and well-equipped campsites and basic amenities. However, a significant environmental change has occurred with the removal of the dam, resulting in the loss of the reservoir and its associated recreational and ecological features. Local users considering "camping near me" at Topsy Campground should be aware of this recent change, as it impacts the overall environment and available activities compared to earlier descriptions. While the campsites themselves may still be appealing, the absence of a thriving water area is a crucial factor to consider.
