Dan Beard Introduce
Are you searching for the perfect "camping near me" experience in the Peach Bottom, Pennsylvania area? Look no further than Dan Beard Campground, a well-regarded site nestled within the larger Camp Horseshoe. Based on feedback from experienced campers and former staff, Dan Beard offers a unique and enjoyable outdoor adventure, particularly well-suited for scout groups and those seeking a traditional camping feel.
Located at 1 New Camp Rd, Peach Bottom, PA 17563, USA, Dan Beard distinguishes itself with its commitment to a classic scouting ambiance. One of its standout features is the provision of all canvas tents specifically designed for scouts. These tents offer a traditional camping experience, providing shelter and a sense of being truly immersed in nature. According to a former staff member of Camp Horseshoe, Dan Beard provides the "best scouting experience" due to these canvas tents and its status as one of the "best maintained sites in the camp."
The location of Dan Beard within Camp Horseshoe is another significant advantage. It's described as being "right in the middle of camp," making various facilities and activity areas easily accessible. This central positioning means that whether you're heading to the pool, the dining hall, or the bathhouse, you can expect a short and convenient walk. This is a notable benefit, especially for groups with younger members or when time is of the essence for scheduled activities.
Real camper feedback highlights this central location further, noting that it's "centrally located to most activities, without requiring a super long walk to get places." The presence of a path leading down the hill to the pool adds to the accessibility. Moreover, the proximity to essential locations like the dining hall, bathhouse, and even the trading post makes Dan Beard a practical choice for a comfortable and convenient camping experience.
For larger groups, such as scout troops, Dan Beard appears to be well-equipped. One review mentions comfortably accommodating a troop of around thirty individuals. The campsite features wooden platforms for the two-person canvas tents, offering a more stable and cleaner base compared to pitching directly on the ground. Additionally, there are two Adirondack shelters, typically reserved for leaders, providing a slightly more robust and sheltered accommodation option.
A key communal space at Dan Beard is a "really nice pavilion with picnic tables under it." This covered area serves as an excellent gathering spot for meals, activities, or simply relaxing out of the sun or light rain. It fosters a sense of community and provides a practical space for group interaction.
Regarding basic amenities, Dan Beard offers a latrine and two hand washing stations. While these are described as "about it for amenities," they are functional and meet essential hygiene needs for a more rustic camping experience. It's important to note, as mentioned in a review, that "there is no electricity down here." This contributes to the more traditional and immersive camping feel, encouraging campers to embrace the natural surroundings.
Considering the "camping near me" category, Dan Beard Campground offers a compelling option for local users seeking an authentic outdoor experience. Its features, including the canvas tents, central location within Camp Horseshoe, and the presence of a pavilion, make it particularly attractive for scout groups and those who appreciate a well-maintained and conveniently situated campsite. While it leans towards a more traditional camping style without electricity at the individual sites, the ease of access to other camp facilities adds significant value.
In summary, Dan Beard Campground, located in Peach Bottom, PA, provides a well-regarded camping experience characterized by its all-canvas tents for scouts, a central location within Camp Horseshoe ensuring easy access to various facilities, and practical amenities such as a pavilion with picnic tables, a latrine, and hand washing stations. It's an ideal choice for those in the local area looking for a "camping near me" option that emphasizes a classic outdoor adventure, particularly for scouting groups. While it forgoes electricity at the campsites, its other attributes make it a highly recommended spot within Camp Horseshoe.

Dan Beard Reviews
As a former staff member at Camp Horseshoe, I found that Dan Beard campsite provides the best scouting experience due to it's all canvas tents for scouts and one of the best maintained sites in the camp. Location wise, it's right in the middle of camp so everything is a short walk away. Personally, I believe it's better than Staff City, which is where the staff members stay.
Jul 27, 2018 · Andrew BrownI think that this is one of the best campsites at Camp Horseshoe. It seems to be centrally located to most activities, without requiring a super long walk to get places. There's a path down the hill that leads to the pool, the dining hall isn't far, nor is the bath house. And the scouts can easily and quickly make it to the trading post also. Our troop of around thirty fits nicely here with the wooden platform, two-person canvas tents. There are two adirondacks (usually for leaders) and a really nice pavilion with picnic tables under it. One latrine and two hand washing stations are about it for amenities, but it does the job. I should also mention that there is no electricity down here.
Aug 10, 2021 · James EvansThis campsite is a complete disgrace to every other one. Overall, I would say that Boonsboro is clearly the best campsite in the whole camp, because of the far superior latrines.
Oct 20, 2021 · Jack MessarosI am from Troop 14 and we go there every summer. It is a very good campsite and close to the troop bus parking bend and a short walk from the mess hall, not as close as Timberline, but close.
