Located at Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Elkmont Cg Kiosk, Elkmont Campground Rd A, Gatlinburg, TN 37738, USA, Elkmont Campground boasts an enviable location within one of the most biodiverse and stunning national parks in the United States. The campground's setting is characterized by lush forests, the soothing sounds of nearby creeks, and spectacular scenery that changes with the seasons. Imagine waking up to the gentle murmur of flowing water and the crisp, clean mountain air. This is the reality that awaits you at Elkmont.
Based on feedback from fellow campers, the environment at Elkmont is truly special. Many reviewers highlight the natural beauty and the proximity to the creek as major draws. The spacing between campsites, particularly in the B loop, is appreciated for offering a sense of privacy and tranquility, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the natural surroundings. Whether you are looking to relax by the water, listen to the rustling leaves, or simply enjoy the peace and quiet of the forest, Elkmont provides the perfect backdrop.
While the natural environment is a primary attraction, Elkmont Campground also offers essential services to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The campground staff is consistently praised for their helpfulness and dedication. One reviewer specifically mentioned the staff's proactive reminders about bear safety and other wildlife considerations, especially important during the early spring when animals are more active. This attentiveness contributes significantly to a safe and worry-free camping experience for all visitors.
It's important to note that while the overall experience is highly rated, the bathroom facilities are described as somewhat dated, and the campground does not offer showers. What truly sets Elkmont Campground apart are its unique features that go beyond the typical camping experience. The area is rich in history, and visitors have the opportunity to explore old, empty houses that offer a glimpse into the craftsmanship of bygone eras. Walking through these structures is like stepping back in time, allowing you to appreciate the architectural details and the lives of those who lived there. Furthermore, the campground is surrounded by numerous walking trails and old home foundations, where you can observe how early settlers ingeniously utilized natural resources, such as river rocks for building chimneys along the streams.
For those who enjoy hiking and exploring, Elkmont serves as an excellent basecamp. The surrounding trails cater to various skill levels, from leisurely strolls along the creek to more challenging hikes deeper into the national park. Discover hidden waterfalls, admire the diverse flora and fauna, and breathe in the fresh mountain air. The opportunity to combine camping with historical exploration and invigorating hikes makes Elkmont a truly unique destination within the "camping near me" category.

Elkmont Campground Reviews
Elkmont is a true gem in the GSMNP. I love the campground, the staff are great, the location is amazing and the scenery spectacular. The bathrooms don't appear to have been updated in recent memory, and there are no showers - thus no full 5 star review, but otherwise, it's a 5 star campground.I really liked the spacing of campsites on the B loop, and could easily see spending a week there. The proximity to the creek and natural beauty are great.I also appreciated staff reminding guests about bears and other critters, especially in the early spring!Yes, we'll be back again soon.
Apr 01, 2025 · Marsh Jones (MNSwamp)They are old houses that are empty but you can walk thru them and enjoy the Craftsmanship of the old times plus there are many walking trails and old home foundations you can see how they built their chimneys out of river rock along the stream..
Apr 10, 2025 · Rodney KWe enjoyed our stay at Elkmont Campground. It was mid April. Our site ,c 05, was tight. Not the campgrounds fault. I chose poorly.
Apr 27, 2025 · Reginald SmithThis is a VERY popular campground in GSMNP. There are multiple hiking options from very easy hikes up Little River trail, there are 2 options for a strenuous 8ish mile one way hike up to the Appalachian trail, and multiple variations of anything in between. The almost finished, refurbished vacation resort town of Elkmont gives you a great idea of higher end vacationing is from a nearly a century ago. Whether in Elmont or out on a trail remember that all this area was heavily logged a century ago. Imagine how huge the trees would have been in this beautiful forest.
