FDR Small Group Camp Introduce
For local organizers planning a group "camping near me" excursion, FDR Small Group Camp, located on Lake Franklin Rd, Pine Mountain, GA 31822, USA, offers a unique and well-equipped destination. This campground is specifically designed to accommodate larger groups, as highlighted by a long-time visitor who has enjoyed the facilities multiple times over the past decade. According to their review, the camp boasts a comprehensive infrastructure, making it suitable for gatherings of up to approximately 70 people, with potential for more if utilizing tents, hammocks, or campers. This established site within the Pine Mountain area provides a dedicated space for group activities and communal living in a natural setting.
Embrace the Natural Environment and Group-Oriented Features
The environment surrounding FDR Small Group Camp in Pine Mountain, GA, is likely characterized by the scenic beauty of the region, potentially including wooded areas and, notably, access to Lake Franklin. The presence of a dock with a designated swimming area suggests that the camp offers opportunities for water-based activities during the warmer months, adding a significant recreational element for group outings. The reviewer mentions a gazebo, which could serve as a central gathering point or a shaded area for activities. A designated fire area with amphitheater seating further emphasizes the camp's suitability for group events, storytelling, or outdoor performances. The high elevation and winds mentioned in the review indicate that the location experiences distinct seasonal changes, with potentially colder temperatures in the fall and winter. This highlights the importance of being prepared for varying weather conditions depending on the time of year of the group's visit. The overall setting appears conducive to fostering camaraderie and shared experiences among larger groups seeking a "camping near me" destination with ample space and dedicated facilities.
Services and Amenities Tailored for Group Comfort
FDR Small Group Camp is equipped with a range of services and amenities designed to support larger groups. The presence of a kitchen and dining room suggests that the camp facilitates communal meal preparation and dining, which is a significant advantage for organized group events. The mention of an infirmary indicates a focus on safety and well-being, providing a space for first aid or temporary care if needed. The six cabins offer accommodation, although the reviewer notes some important considerations regarding their comfort. A bathhouse with multiple showers per gender, including a handicapped-accessible one, addresses the hygiene needs of a larger group and seems to offer reliable hot water. The main lodge features a usable fireplace, providing a central gathering point and a source of warmth during colder periods. Additionally, the main lodge is equipped with large heat lamps for extra warmth on particularly cold winter days. The availability of plenty of large pots, pans, and flatware further underscores the camp's preparedness for accommodating large groups for meal service.
Important Considerations and Unique Features Based on Reviews
The detailed review provides valuable insights into the unique features and important considerations for groups planning a stay at FDR Small Group Camp. A notable aspect is the capacity to accommodate up to 70 people, with flexibility for more using alternative sleeping arrangements. The designated swimming area and dock are significant features for summer visits, offering recreational opportunities. The amphitheater seating around the fire area is unique and enhances the camp's suitability for group activities and gatherings. However, the review also points out some crucial factors to consider, particularly for winter stays. The lack of heat or air conditioning in the cabins, the basic and potentially uncomfortable bunk beds with wire spring mesh and plastic camp pads, and the absence of water/plumbing in the cabins are important limitations to be aware of. The minimal insulation in the cabin walls means that portable heaters may not be entirely effective in winter, requiring guests to come prepared for cold sleeping conditions. The intermittent cell data (around 1 bar at times) could be seen as both a negative and a positive, potentially hindering connectivity but also encouraging a digital detox. The lack of comfortable common hangout areas beyond wooden benches suggests that groups might want to bring their own camp chairs for more relaxed seating options.
Promotional Information and Booking for Local Groups
While the provided information does not include specific promotional details, local groups interested in booking FDR Small Group Camp for their "camping near me" experience should consider several factors. Given its capacity and facilities, the pricing structure is likely geared towards group rates rather than individual bookings. It would be beneficial for local organizers to inquire about seasonal rates, potential discounts for longer stays, or any special packages available for group outings. Booking well in advance is highly recommended, especially during peak seasons such as spring and fall when the weather is typically more favorable. Contacting the relevant authorities managing the FDR State Park or the specific booking entity for the small group camp will provide the most accurate information on availability, pricing, and any current promotions for local groups. Inquiring about any additional fees for using specific facilities or any group-size-based discounts would also be prudent for budget planning.

FDR Small Group Camp Reviews
I have had the great fortune of going to the FDR small group camp multiple times over the last decade. It is a fantastic area equipped with kitchen dining room, Gazebo, infirmary, 6 cabins, and designated fire area with amphitheater seating. It also has a dock with designated swimming area that is great fun in the summer months. It gets a little cold in the fall and winter due to high elevation and winds.I highly recommend this sight for any group outing up to approximately 70 people with room for more if using tents, hammocks, or campers.
Jan 27, 2024 · Dennis SturtzGreat location if you know what you are in for.Below are factors we encountered during a winter stay for 3 nights where temps ranged from 56°-30°Negative Factors:1. No heat or air in cabins.2. Bunks are super loud wire spring mesh with plastic camp pad as mattress.3. No water/plumbing in cabins4. Cabins walls have little to no insulation if you bring heaters in winter. Come prepare for cold sleeping in winter. Do not only rely on portable heaters.5. Only 1 bar of cell data at times6. No real comfortable areas to hangout. Only seats on property are wood benches. Suggest bring camp chairsPositive Factors:1. Only 1 bar of cell data helps everyone unplug from technology and.2. Although beds are old/loud, they are surprisingly comfortable(ish)3. Bath house seems to have unlimited hot water and around 5 showers per gender including a handicapped size one.4. Plenty of large pots, pans, and flatware to accommodate large groups.5. Good useable fireplace in main lodge.6. Main lodge also has large heat lamps in middle of main area for the super cold winter days.Overall we plan to use the place again but maybe not every winter 😊. Hope this review helps answer questions our group had before arriving. Happy Camping!
Apr 02, 2024 · Chad DavidSo I was recently in an accident and find myself in a wheelchair. We were part of a group that frequents the camp. On Friday the Rangers came out and completely replaced the ramp for wheelchair accessibility. That's just astounding to me. Please, frequent the park and say thank you to the people working there.
Mar 30, 2025 · Lokis OwnThis was perfect for our camporee. Cabins, bathrooms, cabin classroom, first aid cabin, kitchen and dinning hall were all clean and great useful spaces. Covered pavilion was a great space for teaching and overflow eating. Gathering at the flag pole was a great way to start and end our day. Camp fire space we nice and open with plenty of room for everyone. We enjoyed fishing from the dock and would love to have had time to canoe. Ranger Danielle is amazing and helped with outdoor and compass skills as well as archery.
Oct 29, 2022 · Linda VogtThis. Place. Is. Awesome. We took our Cub Scout pack here for the weekend and it was such a great trip! The park rangers who checked us in and out were great. The camp kitchen is HUGE and the dining hall is awesome. We loved this place and will definitely be back again.
