Looking for a serene and affordable "Camping Near Me" experience near Banning, California? Fern Basin Campground, located on Forest Rte 4S02, Banning, CA 92220, USA, offers a charming and intimate camping setting. You can reach them at (909) 382-2600 or +1 909-382-2600 for any inquiries.
Fern Basin Campground is described by reviewers as a "beautiful small campground nestled in the trees in the canyon." This paints a picture of a tranquil environment, likely offering shade and a sense of seclusion amidst the natural beauty of the area. The campground's intimate size, with only 22 sites, contributes to its peaceful atmosphere, making it an appealing option for those seeking a quieter "Camping Near Me" experience away from larger, more crowded campgrounds.
The campground operates with a mix of site availability: "several first come first serve" and reserved spaces. This offers flexibility for both spontaneous campers and those who prefer to plan their trips in advance. However, it's important to note a significant limitation mentioned by a reviewer: Fern Basin Campground is not recommended for long trailers. One camper with a 20-foot trailer reportedly had "a lot of trouble parking," indicating that the parking spaces are not designed to accommodate larger vehicles. This suggests that the campground is primarily "geared towards tent camping," which is a crucial consideration for those searching for "Camping Near Me" with RVs or trailers.
In terms of facilities, Fern Basin Campground provides basic amenities. The bathrooms are equipped with "a vault toilet," which is a non-flush toilet often found in more rustic camping settings. It's important for potential visitors to be aware of this type of restroom facility. A significant service limitation currently exists at Fern Basin Campground: "there is no water available...due to issues with the tanks." This is a critical piece of information for anyone planning to camp here, as they will need to bring their own water for drinking, cooking, and hygiene. However, the review does mention that "water is available at Marion Mountain Campground just up from Fern Basin," suggesting a nearby alternative for obtaining water if absolutely necessary, though it would require a trip outside the immediate campground.
Despite the lack of on-site water, reviewers express a strong affinity for Fern Basin Campground. One camper stated, "I really love staying here," highlighting its positive aspects that outweigh the inconvenience of bringing water. Another reviewer described it as a "great little gem" and "small but cozy and very accessible." These testimonials suggest that the campground's natural beauty and peaceful ambiance are significant draws.
Another important factor to consider is cell phone service. One reviewer with Metro reported having "no cell signal," and another with T-Mobile also had no signal. However, a friend with Verizon did have service. This indicates that cell phone reception at Fern Basin Campground can be unreliable and may depend on the carrier. Campers who need to stay connected should be aware of this limitation and plan accordingly.
The reviews also emphasize the importance of responsible camping practices at Fern Basin Campground. Campers are encouraged to "enjoy the beauty of the campground and help by picking up your trash and putting it in the dumpster provided." This reflects a community-minded approach to maintaining the natural environment of this small and cherished camping spot.
A significant feature of Fern Basin Campground is its exceptional affordability. At "$10 a night," as mentioned by both reviewers, it offers a very budget-friendly "Camping Near Me" option. This low cost, combined with the relaxing and peaceful environment, makes it a highly attractive choice for those seeking an escape without breaking the bank.
While specific promotional information is not provided, the consistently low nightly fee of $10 can be considered a significant promotional aspect in itself, especially when compared to other campgrounds in the Southern California region. This affordability, coupled with the positive descriptions of the environment, positions Fern Basin Campground as a great value for money for those prioritizing a natural and tranquil camping experience over extensive amenities.
In summary, Fern Basin Campground offers a beautiful and peaceful "Camping Near Me" experience nestled in a canyon near Banning, CA. Its small size (22 sites) and wooded environment contribute to a relaxing atmosphere. It is best suited for tent camping, as parking for longer trailers can be problematic. The campground currently has vault toilets and no on-site water, requiring campers to bring their own. Cell phone service can be unreliable depending on the carrier. However, its accessibility, cozy feel, and remarkably low nightly fee of $10 make it a "great little gem" for budget-conscious campers seeking a natural retreat. Local users looking for an affordable and tranquil "Camping Near Me" option should consider Fern Basin Campground, keeping in mind its limitations regarding trailer size and the current lack of on-site water.

Fern Basin Campground Reviews
I love this campground. It's a beautiful small campground nestled in the trees in the canyon. It has 22 sites....several first come first serve and then there are reserved spaces. I don't recommend long trailers. One man had a lot of trouble parking his 20 footer. The parking spaces are not really designed for that. It's geared towards tent camping. The bathrooms have a vault toilet in them. Currently there is no water available in Fern Basin Campground due to issues with the tanks. However, water is available at Marion Mountain Campground just up from Fern Basin. I really love staying here. I had no cell signal with Metro and another lady had T-Mobile and no signal. Her friend had one with Verizon. Please enjoy the beauty of the campground and help by picking up your trash and putting it in the dumpster provided. At $10 a night, you can't beat it. Very relaxing and peaceful.
Jul 02, 2023 · Jennifer WoodThis a a great little gem to choose if you’re looking for a quick weekend get away or if you’re just passing trough. It’s a small but cozy and very accessible campground. With water and restrooms available, but no showers and no electricity. At $10 you can’t beat the price.
Oct 26, 2021 · Adriana LopezBeautiful campground. We would totally come here again. The water wasn't working, due to issues with the tank. Thankfully we took enough water, as we only stood one night. There was a lot to explore outside of camp and inside.
Jun 16, 2023 · Sylina Santa AnnaStayed here first week in October. Nights were cold but days were gorgeous!! We stayed in the week and the campsites were empty. Bathrooms are vault but surprisingly clean. We stayed in #21 and could smell the faint smell of the bathrooms once in awhile and bees were everywhere which was more annoying then anything.
Oct 02, 2017 · Meaghan BishoffCampground is nice if small. There is water at most if not all sites. The bathrooms are basically portypottys and have no lights in the building so bring a headlamp. The sites are good sized. I did not see a bear warning until the trail so make sure you have a bear bag or something since there are no bear boxes.
