Dark Canyon Campground Introduce
For those seeking a tranquil and secluded "Camping Near Me" experience in the vicinity of Banning, California, Dark Canyon Campground, located at Banning, CA 92220, USA, offers a promising retreat. You can contact them at (909) 382-2921 or +1 909-382-2921 for information and potential reservations.
Dark Canyon Campground is described by reviewers as "gorgeous" and "secluded," suggesting a natural environment that provides a sense of escape and privacy. Its designation as a "chill spot for tent only camping" indicates that the campground is specifically designed for those who prefer a more traditional tent camping experience, which is a key piece of information for users browsing the "Camping Near Me" category with different accommodation preferences.
The environment of Dark Canyon Campground is characterized by its secluded nature and the presence of trees, as it is located in a canyon. Reviewers note that the "spots are spaced out," which is a significant advantage for campers seeking privacy and a sense of immersion in nature without feeling crowded. The campground is also praised for being "very nicely maintained," suggesting that efforts are made to keep the area clean and pleasant for visitors.
In terms of amenities, Dark Canyon Campground offers essential facilities while maintaining a more rustic charm. It is equipped with "pit toilets" (also known as outhouses), which are non-flushing toilets common in more remote camping locations. The availability of "potable water spouts throughout the campground" is a crucial service, providing access to drinking water for campers. However, it's important to note that, as mentioned by one reviewer, there are "no showers," which is a factor to consider for those planning longer stays or who value showering facilities as part of their "Camping Near Me" experience.
A significant feature of Dark Canyon Campground is its proximity to outdoor activities. Reviewers mention that "there’s tons of hiking nearby," making it an excellent base for those looking to explore the natural beauty of the area on foot. The surrounding mountainous terrain likely offers a variety of trails with different levels of difficulty and scenic views, enhancing the appeal for adventure-seeking campers.
One reviewer mentioned that "there’s a few other campgrounds farther up the mountain with more of a view if that’s what you’re looking for." This suggests that Dark Canyon Campground itself might be more focused on seclusion and being nestled within the canyon, while other nearby options might prioritize panoramic vistas. This allows users within the "Camping Near Me" category to choose based on their specific preferences for environment and scenery.
Important logistical considerations for camping at Dark Canyon Campground include limited connectivity. One reviewer explicitly stated "no cell reception except Verizon network." This is crucial information for campers who rely on their phones for communication or navigation. Those with other mobile carriers should be prepared for the possibility of being off-grid during their stay. The same reviewer also noted that the "nearest gas station/store" is approximately "20 minutes away," highlighting the importance of bringing all necessary supplies, including food, fuel, and other essentials, to avoid inconvenient trips.
Another practical detail mentioned is the parking allowance: "2 cars per plot and in same spot." This is useful information for groups arriving in multiple vehicles to ensure they can park adequately at their campsite.
One reviewer enthusiastically gave Dark Canyon Campground a "10/10 recommend" rating and expressed being "excited to go back!" This strong positive feedback underscores the appeal of the campground's secluded environment, well-maintained facilities, and access to hiking.
Promotional information is not explicitly provided in the reviews. However, the positive descriptions of the campground's beauty, seclusion, and peacefulness can be seen as implicit endorsements. For local users seeking a tent-only "Camping Near Me" option that prioritizes a natural and quiet experience over extensive amenities and connectivity, Dark Canyon Campground appears to be a highly recommended choice.
To obtain more specific details about the campground, such as the number of individual campsites, reservation procedures, fees, and any specific regulations, it is advisable to contact the phone numbers provided or visit the website for the San Bernardino National Forest (if Dark Canyon Campground is listed there, as many campgrounds in the area are managed by the National Forest Service). Inquiries could also include questions about the availability of picnic tables, fire rings, and any restrictions on firewood, as one reviewer mentioned bringing their own.
In conclusion, Dark Canyon Campground offers a "Camping Near Me" experience that emphasizes natural beauty, seclusion, and a peaceful atmosphere, specifically catering to tent campers. Its well-spaced campsites, potable water, and access to nearby hiking trails are significant features. However, potential visitors should be aware of the limited amenities (pit toilets, no showers), the likelihood of limited or no cell phone reception (except possibly for Verizon users), and the 20-minute distance to the nearest services. For local users prioritizing a tranquil and nature-focused camping trip, Dark Canyon Campground appears to be a highly recommended option within the Banning area.

Gorgeous, secluded campground with amenities close by. There are pit toilets and potable water spouts throughout the campground. Campsites are nicely spaced out and there’s tons of hiking nearby. Very nicely maintained and super relaxing. Also there’s a few other campgrounds farther up the mountain with more of a view if that’s what you’re looking for. Excited to go back! 10/10 recommend
