Governor Thompson State Park Campground Introduce
Are you searching for the ideal "camping near me" in Wisconsin? Look no further than Governor Thompson State Park Campground, nestled at Campground Rd, Crivitz, WI 54114, USA. This popular campground offers a blend of natural beauty and essential amenities, making it a fantastic choice for local campers seeking a relaxing and enjoyable outdoor experience.
Governor Thompson State Park itself is renowned for its picturesque landscapes, and the campground seamlessly integrates into this environment. While specific details about the environment within the campground are limited in the provided reviews, the mention of a lake suggests opportunities for waterfront enjoyment and scenic views. The overall atmosphere of state parks in Wisconsin typically emphasizes natural preservation and opportunities for outdoor recreation, implying that campers can expect a setting rich in flora and fauna.
Based on customer feedback, the campground is "well equipped," providing essential services to enhance your camping comfort. Notably, showers are available, a significant convenience for extended stays and maintaining hygiene. Additionally, pit toilets are present, offering a more rustic but necessary facility. The availability of these amenities contributes to a more comfortable and accessible camping experience for a wider range of campers.
One of the features mentioned is the onsite sale of firewood. This is a valuable service, saving campers the hassle of transporting their own. However, one reviewer pointed out that firewood might be available for a lower price outside the campground. This suggests that while convenient, it might be worth exploring local options for budget-conscious campers. Supporting local businesses outside the park can also be a way to contribute to the surrounding community.
The presence of a lake within the park offers opportunities for swimming. However, one visitor noted that the water appeared dark, which deterred them from swimming. Water clarity can vary depending on the time of year, weather conditions, and natural characteristics of the lake. It's advisable to check current lake conditions or recent reviews for more up-to-date information if swimming is a primary activity for your camping trip. Despite this observation, the mere presence of a lake often implies other potential recreational activities such as fishing or kayaking, although these were not explicitly mentioned in the provided feedback.
For those who appreciate the convenience of nearby amenities, Governor Thompson State Park Campground offers a significant advantage. A dollar store is located a short distance from the campsite, providing easy access to basic necessities, snacks, and perhaps forgotten camping essentials. This proximity can be incredibly convenient for quick errands without requiring a long drive. For a wider range of shopping options, including groceries and other supplies, a 20-minute drive will take you to additional stores.
When it comes to dining options beyond the campfire, the area around Governor Thompson State Park also offers choices. Several local pubs and restaurants are located within a reasonable distance, approximately a 20-minute drive from the campground. This provides campers with the flexibility to enjoy a meal out, experience local cuisine, or simply take a break from cooking at the campsite. Exploring these local establishments can add another dimension to your camping trip.

This positive feedback from repeat visitors speaks volumes about the overall quality and experience offered by the campground. It suggests that despite any minor drawbacks, the overall camping experience is highly satisfying and encourages return visits.
In summary, Governor Thompson State Park Campground presents a compelling option for those seeking "camping near me" in the Crivitz area. It offers well-equipped campsites with essential amenities like showers and pit toilets. The convenience of onsite firewood sales and the proximity to a nearby dollar store add to the appeal. While the lake's water clarity was a concern for one visitor, the presence of a lake offers potential for water-based activities. Furthermore, the accessibility to local pubs and restaurants within a short drive provides dining alternatives. Governor Thompson State Park Campground Reviews
First visit. Well equipped campground with showers and pit toilets. The campsites are located a long way from the entrance which I didn't like but that's just me. Fire wood is sold onsite but is available outside the campground for less money. There is a lake for swimming but the water was so dark I didn't like it. A dollar store is available a short distance from the campsite. After that you'll have to drive 20 minutes or so. There are several local pubs and restaurants around if you choose that option.
