Old Veteran's Lake Campground Introduce
Are you searching for "camping near me" and considering a more rustic outdoor experience in the Crivitz, Wisconsin area? Old Veteran's Lake Campground, located in Crivitz, WI 54114, offers a back-to-nature camping option. Based on recent reviews from campers, we can provide you with a detailed introduction to its environment, services, and features to help you decide if it's the right fit for your next camping trip.
The environment of Old Veteran's Lake Campground is characterized by its spacious and private campsites, many of which are situated along the river. Campers have noted that there are "plenty of woods for privacy between each site," enhancing the feeling of seclusion and immersion in nature. The riverfront sites seem to be particularly desirable, offering a picturesque setting right by the water. Additionally, the campground features trails that are nice for walking, allowing visitors to explore the surrounding wooded areas. One reviewer also mentioned a "swimming hole" with clean water, although it was noted that it could use some upkeep due to being a bit overgrown. Despite this, the water was described as nice for a dip and suitable for children to play in.
In terms of services and amenities, Old Veteran's Lake Campground leans towards a more rustic experience. According to reviews, the water available at the campground is not potable; one camper described it as "red and murky," even after running it for a while, and another mentioned that the "fountain water is a bit rusty" and personally wouldn't drink it, though it was fine for cleaning up. The restroom facilities consist of pit toilets. However, one reviewer noted that these pit toilets were clean, which is a positive aspect of the basic facilities. It's important to note that the campground does not offer electricity or a dump station, which is typical for more rustic camping locations.
The features of Old Veteran's Lake Campground include spacious and private campsites, particularly those along the river. Each site appears to have nice fire pits. The presence of a swimming hole provides an opportunity for water-based recreation. The walking trails around the campground allow for exploration of the natural surroundings. For those seeking more comprehensive amenities, one reviewer mentioned that a short drive to the state park offers very nice and clean family showers, suggesting that while Old Veteran's Lake Campground is rustic, more modern facilities are accessible nearby.
Considering the "camping near me" platform, Old Veteran's Lake Campground offers a specific type of camping experience that may appeal to certain users. If you value spacious and private campsites in a natural wooded setting, especially those along a river, and are comfortable with more rustic amenities like pit toilets and non-potable water, this campground could be a good option for you. The clean pit toilets are a plus for a rustic facility. The swimming hole, despite needing some maintenance, offers a place to cool off, and the walking trails provide opportunities for light activity.
However, it's crucial to be aware of the limitations. The lack of drinkable water, electricity, and a dump station means that campers need to be prepared for a more self-sufficient experience. The comment about black flies in late April might also be a consideration for those planning to visit during that time. The out-of-state visitor fee of around $35 for a rustic campground was also mentioned, suggesting that it's important to inquire about the current rates, especially if you are not a local resident.
For local users looking for "camping near me" that emphasizes space, privacy, and a natural setting, Old Veteran's Lake Campground has its merits. The spacious and wooded sites, especially those by the river, offer a tranquil camping environment. The clean pit toilets are a welcome feature for a rustic campground. The swimming hole and walking trails add to the recreational possibilities. However, potential visitors should be prepared for the rustic nature of the amenities, including the lack of potable water and electrical hookups.

For local users browsing "camping near me," Old Veteran's Lake Campground presents a rustic option with notable advantages in terms of campsite size and privacy. If you are equipped for self-sufficient camping and appreciate a natural, wooded setting with river access, this campground could be a worthwhile choice. Old Veteran's Lake Campground Reviews
I wish I could give it a 2 1/2. This is a rustic campground that cost us, as out of state visitors about $35. The water is not drinkable, it’s red and murky, even after letting it run for a while. There are pit toilets. No electricity and no dump station. They were black flies in late April. If you’re just coming to fish, this might be OK for you. If you’re coming for a family vacation, you may want to look elsewhere. Advantage: The campsites along the river are spacious and private. We stayed here because it was open in late April and a little else was.
Apr 28, 2025 · Lisa K.Sites are very spacious and clean with plenty of woods for privacy between each site. We stayed at site 10. Fire pits are nice. We didn’t see any ticks but maybe it’s due to time of year. Pit toilets only but they were clean so that’s fine. The fountain water is a bit rusty but does fine for cleaning up. Personally I wouldn’t drink it. The swimming hole could use some TLC as it’s a bit over grown but the water was clean and nice to take a dip and for kids to play in. The trails around are nice for walking. A short drive to the state park has very nice and clean family showers. Not much to do at the state park but it’s still nice and quiet. Overall we would go back!
Aug 06, 2023 · Savannah Van EssThis state forest campground offers 16 campsites and a small swimming beach. All campsites are reservable on the DNR reservation system. Drinking water is provided at a centrally located fountain; water is not clear but tastes fine.No sites have a lake view but all are spacious. There’s ample spacing and vegetation between most campsites.Governor Thompson state park is just a short drive or bike ride away. Compared to the state park, campsites here cost less and the swimming beach is nicer. Those looking for more amenities may prefer the state park which offers electric sites, showers and restrooms with running water. None of those can be found at Veteran’s Lake.
Jan 29, 2022 · Greg KruegerBeautiful area with lots of wildlife. Clean, working bathrooms and cheap spacious campsites. Only downside is there are tons of ticks, I picked almost 7 off me after walking around the lake area for less than 20 minutes. Ticks are to be expected, but I’ve never had so many on me at once! Just bring tick spray and check yourself every now and then, and you’ll be fine.
May 09, 2023 · Ana RileyThe campground is under the name Governor Earl and camp spaces (15) are available thru Wisconsin State camping website. The campground is monitored by Governor Thompson campground 3miles away. The campground has no electrical sites and is monitored daily by the WI State Rangers. It is a quiet campground with a small lake with a sand beach. We enjoy camping each year at Governor Earl.
