Thornton's Campgrounds Introduce
Hello local camping enthusiasts! If you're searching for "camping near me" in the Athelstane, Wisconsin area, Thornton's Campgrounds, located at W12882 Parkway Rd, offers a camping experience with a mix of natural attractions and social opportunities. Based on recent customer feedback, let's take a closer look at what you can expect from this campground.
Immerse Yourself in the Sounds and Sights of Nature
Thornton's Campgrounds appears to offer a natural setting where you can truly connect with the outdoors. One reviewer enthusiastically shared their experience of hearing coyotes near their tent site at night, describing it as both "very cool and a little scary but in a good way." This suggests that the campground is situated in an area where wildlife is present, offering a more immersive nature experience. The same reviewer also recounted spotting an eagle in a tree near their group's campsite, highlighting the potential for observing local wildlife. For those who appreciate the sounds of nature and the chance to see local fauna, Thornton's Campgrounds could provide an appealing environment. The mention of "country people" feeling at home further suggests a setting that resonates with those who enjoy a more rustic and natural ambiance.
Tent Camping and Campsite Characteristics
Based on the reviews, tent camping is a popular option at Thornton's Campgrounds. One reviewer specifically mentioned that their "campsite (for tents) was perfect." However, another long-term visitor described the tent sites as "primitive." This suggests that while some tent sites might be well-suited for campers, they may lack extensive amenities typically found at more developed campgrounds. It's important for tent campers to be prepared for a more rustic experience, potentially without paved pads or dedicated electrical hookups at each site. The positive feedback about a "perfect" tent site indicates that there are desirable spots available, but it might be beneficial to inquire about the specific characteristics of different tent sites when making arrangements.
Basic Amenities: Restrooms and Showers
One of the reviewers noted that Thornton's Campgrounds does have a "decent restroom and shower room." This is a significant amenity for campers who prefer more comfort than what primitive camping typically offers. Having access to restrooms and showers can enhance the overall camping experience, especially for longer stays. However, it's worth noting that another long-term visitor expressed concerns about the maintenance of other facilities, which we will discuss further below.
Recreational Activities: Fishing and Live Music
Thornton's Campgrounds seems to offer some recreational opportunities. One reviewer mentioned that "fishing across the street was good" for their brother, who caught a significant number of bass. This suggests that the campground is located near a body of water suitable for fishing, which could be a major draw for anglers. Additionally, the reviewer noted that there was "live music outside at the bar." While their group didn't attend due to their own "embibing," they could hear the music and found it "nice." This indicates that the campground may have a social element with live entertainment, potentially creating a lively atmosphere, especially on certain nights. However, the noise level might be a consideration for those seeking a purely quiet and secluded experience.
Connectivity and Potential Drawbacks
For those who rely on mobile communication, it's important to note that one reviewer mentioned "no cell service for most of us." This could be a significant factor for some campers who need to stay connected. However, the reviewer also indicated that "that didn't matter" to their group, suggesting that it can also be an opportunity to disconnect and fully immerse oneself in the camping experience. On the other hand, a long-term visitor expressed significant dissatisfaction with the campground's upkeep, stating that "things have gone way downhill in the last 5 years." They specifically mentioned issues such as "port o potties were full of spiderwebs and tall grass in front of the doors," and "water spickets were not on" upon arrival. This negative feedback raises concerns about the maintenance and management of the campground, suggesting potential inconsistencies in the quality of the camping experience. The reviewer ultimately concluded that the place was "not worth going to any longer" for them due to these and other unspecified negative experiences, citing "bad management."
Summary of Features and Considerations
Based on the available reviews, Thornton's Campgrounds offers the following:
- A natural environment with potential for wildlife sightings (coyotes, eagles).
- Tent camping sites, with varying levels of perceived quality ("perfect" vs. "primitive").
- A "decent restroom and shower room."
- Proximity to a fishing spot across the street.
- Live music at an outdoor bar (potential for noise).
- Limited or no cell service for some carriers.
However, potential local users should also be aware of the negative feedback regarding:
- Concerns about campground maintenance (full port o potties, unmaintained water spickets).
- Perceived decline in quality and management over time.
- Potentially primitive nature of some tent sites.

Given the mixed reviews, inquiring directly about the current condition of the facilities and any ongoing promotions would be a prudent step before making a booking.
In conclusion, Thornton's Campgrounds in Athelstane, WI, presents a camping option with natural appeal, fishing opportunities, and live music. However, potential local campers should also consider the recent negative feedback regarding maintenance and management. Thornton's Campgrounds Reviews
We had a great time! It was my brother's birthday and we all celebrated big time! Our campsite (for tents) was perfect. We heard the coyotes on the second night near our site. It was very cool and a little scary but in a good way. We're all country people anyway and hoped to enjoy the nature at it's fullest. Saw an eagle up in the tree right behind my brother's and sister in laws site. I wish I had gotten a picture! Fishing across the street was good for my brother who caught 8 bass into the afternoon! Live music outside at the bar but we didn't go because we "embibed" enough already but we could hear some of the music and it was nice. No cell service for most of us but that didn't matter. Hopefully we'll be back this fall. Thank you Thornton's! Sincerely, Karl N., Debbie, George and Cindy L. Felicia and Jazz
Aug 20, 2023 · DebThey have a decent restroom and shower room. Otherwise things have gone way downhill in the last 5 years that we have been going there. We tent camp and the sites are primitive. We stay for at least 5 days each year. We got there and the port o potties were full of spiderwebs and tall grass in front of the doors that you had to walk thru. The water spickets were not on. They had to turn them on. I just don't feel that the place is worth going to any longer for us. We had a couple of other experiences thru our stay that made it where we won't be going back there!! Bad management!!
Sep 11, 2024 · Cindy LeckThis was one of the best camping trips I have ever been on. To start of our trip we arrived to the campground and our site was so huge and private. Also really enjoyed not having to lug bundles of back and forth they have it already before you arrive. I really recommend going white water rafting. Our guides name was Doug and he was phenomenal. Throughout the trip he made sure we were safe, comfortable, and had the correct knowledge. In every situation he was able to act fast and get everyone to safety. The best tour guide ever!! He deserves a raise!!!!!!!!
Jun 26, 2017 · katlyn marquetteWe planned to spend some time away from the big city and do some white water rafting over the weekend. Thornton's turned out to be an excellent choice. We reached in the afternoon and Mark gave us a quick overview of the places around. Just opposite the campgrounds, was a man made small beach where folks could camp. Also, round the corner there was a good music concert with 7 bands. Evening well spent. That whole area is a bit remote in terms of food, so keep food to prepare. The cabins at the campground have cooking facility with flame stove along with fridge and microwave, which was very nice. We rented a 2 bed cabin. Bar opens at 10 am and you have an option of pizzas there as well. The lady at the bar is very polite and helpful. Phone network might be patchy.Overall very pleasant experience. Would come back again for ATVs.
Jun 19, 2019 · Sharad JhingranWe will definitely return! We were coming in late and Mark the owner so thoughtfully had our fire roaring in our campsite when we arrived. The sites were beautiful, rustic and spread out. We were close enough to the bathhouse under the main building/bar but wished there were building bathrooms (instead of outhouses) close by. But again, we loved our stay and that is the only improvement I would make!
