Me and my now husband got married at Heartwood in May 2024 after hearing about it from a family friend who lives in the area. We live in the South Bay Area, and we were having a hard time finding exactly what we wanted for the price we could afford in the surrounding areas. We were looking for a venue that we could stay up late at, we could have friends and family spend the night with us, and we wanted a space that felt magical and beautiful and not too school summer campy. When my friend mentioned we should look in Mendocino for a wedding venue, I was blown away by Heartwood immediately. The whole space is beautifully kept, there are wonderful facilities, the secret meadow provided an intimate ceremony space, and we were able to take over the whole property while having our bridal party camp with us the days leading up to the wedding. I would 100% recommend Khamoor's space, she is a wonderful person to work with, and she was very relaxed and welcoming. We have already had several guests ask about us returning to the campsite for a family and friends get-together yearly! We will be back for sure! - Leann Jones

Heartwood Mendocino Introduce

For those exploring "Camping Near Me" in the picturesque Mendocino region of California, Heartwood Mendocino stands out as a distinctive and highly-rated glamping and event destination. Located at 40500 Little Lake Rd, Mendocino, CA 95460, USA, Heartwood offers a refined outdoor experience, blending the tranquility of nature with comfortable amenities, making it ideal for everything from a romantic getaway to a full-property wedding or retreat.

Environment: Magical Redwood Sanctuary with Sunny Meadows

The environment at Heartwood Mendocino is consistently described by guests as "pure magic" and an "absolute gem." The property is nestled among towering redwood trees, creating an immersive forest experience that is both serene and invigorating. Beyond the majestic redwoods, Heartwood also features sunny meadows, providing a diverse landscape that can accommodate various activities and moods. The property is designed to be a private and quiet oasis, yet it's conveniently located just minutes (approximately 7 to 10 minutes drive, or 4.5 miles) from downtown Mendocino, with its charming shops, restaurants, and beautiful beaches. This proximity to both wilderness and town amenities is a significant advantage, offering the best of both worlds. The property itself spans approximately 40 acres, surrounded by a 50,000-acre state forest, ensuring extensive access to world-class hiking and biking trails directly from the property. The overall atmosphere emphasizes a deep connection with nature, allowing guests to soak in the views, enjoy the fresh air, and witness brilliant stars at night, free from the constant digital distractions.

A standout environmental feature, frequently lauded in reviews and promotional materials, is the "Redwood Tree Shower" or "outdoor tree shower." This unique and mystical delight allows guests to shower within the embrace of nature's splendor, offering a truly unforgettable experience. As one reviewer aptly put it, "showering inside a redwood tree is the only way to shower." While specific details on the water source are not provided, the experience itself is consistently highlighted as a luxurious and unique immersion in the natural surroundings.

Services and Facilities: Glamping with Comfort and Charm

Heartwood Mendocino redefines "camping" by offering a "glamping experience to remember." The accommodations and facilities are thoughtfully designed to provide comfort without sacrificing the essence of being outdoors. Key services and facilities include:

  • Luxurious Tent Cabins: The primary lodging option consists of "glam cabins" or "private tent cabins." These are described as beautiful solid structures with canvas walls and roofs, solid wood floors, real windows, and doors. They are furnished with comfortable queen beds and heated mattresses, along with luxe linens, pillows, and down comforters, ensuring a cozy stay even in cooler weather. Some cabins, like Cabin 4, may also include a twin bed, fully outfitted. Newer cabins, such as Cabin 8, are extra-large with full wall forest view windows and king-size beds. Towels, lanterns, and other essentials are provided, making the packing process simpler for guests. Each cabin typically has its own deck and a handmade redwood picnic table just outside.

  • Bathhouse with Hot Showers: Complementing the cabins is a well-maintained bathhouse, heated for year-round comfort, with plenty of hot water. This facility is steps away from the cabins and includes hot showers and a beautiful common room, providing a comfortable space even during inclement weather. The aforementioned outdoor tree shower is a separate, special feature that adds to the unique bathing experience, often hailed as a highlight by guests.

  • Outdoor Camp Kitchen: For guest convenience, Heartwood features a shared outdoor camp kitchen. This area is equipped with barbecues, a sink, and work tables, along with huge dining tables. Basic camp cooking and dining equipment are provided, allowing guests to prepare their own meals. Guests are typically advised to bring their own BBQ briquettes and a bottle of camp fuel if they wish to use the stove. While meals are not generally provided for individual stays, the Lodge Commercial Kitchen can cater to group events of 15 or more people upon inquiry.

  • Event Spaces: Heartwood Mendocino shines as an event venue. The property boasts a "Secret Meadow" which provided an intimate ceremony space for a recent wedding, perfect for nuptials. The ability to "take over the whole property" for events, allowing guests and bridal parties to camp on-site, is a significant draw. Other unique touches like a 1920s farmhouse provide additional spaces for preparation or smaller gatherings. The layout offers both space and intimacy for various event needs, such as a cocktail hour around the outdoor kitchen area or dinner receptions. The venue has a capacity to accommodate up to 200 people for events.

  • Shared Amenities: Beyond the cabins and kitchen, Heartwood also offers a pool (open during summer, typically May through October), a sauna, and a hot tub, which are open year-round. These amenities enhance the relaxation and wellness aspect of the stay, providing options for unwinding after a day of exploring or activities.

  • Accessibility: While the property is noted as being steep and mostly unpaved, there is an ADA accessible room (Room #32 in the Madrone building) with a private bathroom, and ADA parking available at the Madrone building, indicating efforts towards inclusivity.

Features: Unique Experiences and Event Hosting

Heartwood Mendocino’s features go beyond standard camping, aiming for a truly unique and memorable experience. The "glamping" aspect is a key differentiator, offering a blend of luxury and nature. The iconic "Redwood Tree Shower" is not just a novelty but an essential element of the Heartwood experience, frequently praised by guests. The property is designed to be a "learning village, community hub, and eco retreat destination nurturing regenerative relationship with self, community, and earth." This philosophy permeates the guest experience, encouraging relaxation, well-being, and connection with the natural surroundings. It emphasizes a "no-frills, no-wifi" approach in cabins to encourage disconnection, though wireless internet is available for purchase at the Welcome Center if needed.

As a wedding venue, Heartwood is highly recommended by those who have celebrated their special day there. The ability to host friends and family overnight, stay up late, and enjoy a magical, beautiful space that doesn't feel like a "school summer campy" venue is a significant advantage. The flexibility to allow personal tents, glamp companies, or van camping on the property for an additional fee ($35.00 per person per night for personal tent, glamp company, or van camping) further enhances its capacity for large events. The owner, Khamoor, is consistently praised for being "wonderful to work with, and she was very relaxed and welcoming," which is crucial for successful event planning. The creative touches and personal details that couples can incorporate, such as custom cabin keys or a vintage telephone for recorded messages, add to the bespoke nature of events held here.

Heartwood also serves as a sanctuary that is cannabis friendly, with designated smoking areas (cement pads around lodging, the Smoking Temple by the Lodge, and by the Facilities/Maintenance building). However, it's important to note their strict "no pets policy" (except for licensed service animals, which must be communicated to the front desk upon reservation), due to being a wildlife sanctuary, which guests must honor. They also have a list of items not to bring, including sage, incense, candles, camp stoves, sparklers, fireworks, and guns, to maintain the safety and integrity of the retreat. Tap water at Heartwood is fresh and delicious, and guests are encouraged not to bring single-use plastic water bottles.
