Van Damme State Park Campground Introduce
Van Damme State Park Campground, located at Park Rd, Little River, CA 95456, USA, offers an "amazing campground" experience for those seeking to immerse themselves in the diverse natural beauty of the Northern California coast. For individuals and families searching for "Camping Near Me" in the Mendocino area, this state park campground presents a compelling option, blending convenient beach access with lush forest trails and essential amenities.
The environment of Van Damme State Park Campground is a significant draw, offering a unique dual landscape. It is situated "right across the street from Van Damme Beach," providing easy access to the Pacific Ocean for beachcombing, kayaking, or simply enjoying the coastal scenery. Conversely, the campground itself is nestled within a more forested setting, offering shade and the sounds of nature. One reviewer fondly recalls falling "asleep listening to the brook and frogs," highlighting the serene natural ambiance within the campground. The presence of spring blooms like "forget-me-nots and english lawn daisies" further enhances the picturesque environment, particularly during the spring season. However, campers should be aware of local wildlife; "tiny foxes that will steal your food and literally jump on your table and poop all over" are noted, necessitating careful food storage, especially when cooking or having a fire late at night.
In terms of services and features, Van Damme State Park Campground provides a range of essential amenities for a comfortable camping experience. The "campground was clean," indicating a high standard of maintenance, which is consistently managed by attentive staff. The "campground host was super nice," and they "really puts attention into cleaning the campgrounds after campers leave," which is a testament to the dedication to keeping the sites tidy for new arrivals. Showers are available, operating on a coin-operated system, requiring "a dollar in quarters or a token you can purchase from the camp host." This provides a convenient facility for personal hygiene, even in a natural setting. Firewood is available for purchase from the host for $10, with the added benefit that the proceeds "goes towards cultural education and events," contributing to park programs. Alternatively, firewood can be sourced from nearby Mendocino, which is a "20 minute drive" away. A local gas station "up the road across from the inn hours 6am - 7pm" also provides supplies.
The campground offers sites suitable for various camping styles, with "Most RV's can find a site to fit in," alongside options for tent camping. While some sites, such as Campsite 3, might be "pretty close to other campers," the overall experience can still be enjoyable, as indicated by a positive review. Sites typically include amenities like picnic tables and fire rings, essential for outdoor living.
A significant feature of Van Damme State Park is its extensive network of trails. The camp host provides "recommendations on trails to hike." However, it's important for visitors to note current conditions, as in March (at the time of one review), "the Bog trail and the Fern canyon trail are wrecked cause of the storm and are closed down for repairs." It's always advisable to check the current status of trails before visiting, especially after significant weather events. These trails offer opportunities for exploring diverse ecosystems, from lush fern canyons to unique bog environments, providing varied hiking experiences right from the campground.
Promotional insights derived from customer experiences highlight the park's key strengths. The "amazing campground" status is repeatedly affirmed. The ease of access to both the beach and the nearby town of Mendocino (for supplies and dining) is a major convenience. The presence of a "super nice" camp host who is dedicated to cleanliness and helpful recommendations greatly enhances the visitor experience. While there are considerations like the close proximity of some sites and the presence of wildlife, these are presented as practical realities rather than deterrents. The overall positive sentiment suggests that the benefits of the location, cleanliness, and helpful staff outweigh these minor considerations for most campers. For those looking for "Camping Near Me" that offers a blend of coastal relaxation and forest adventure, Van Damme State Park Campground is a highly appealing choice.
In conclusion, Van Damme State Park Campground at Park Rd, Little River, CA, offers an exceptional camping experience that caters to a wide range of outdoor enthusiasts. Its unparalleled location directly across from Van Damme Beach and its proximity to the charming town of Mendocino provide both natural beauty and convenient access to amenities. With clean campsites, well-maintained facilities including coin-operated showers, and a helpful and attentive camp host, the campground ensures a comfortable stay. While visitors should be prepared for wildlife and check trail conditions, the opportunities for hiking, enjoying the serene forest environment, and exploring the coast make it an ideal destination. For anyone searching for "Camping Near Me" in the Northern California region who desires a blend of beach access, forest trails, and dependable facilities, Van Damme State Park Campground is a highly recommended and rewarding choice. Van Damme State Park Campground Reviews
Amazing campground right across the street from Van Damme Beach, 20 minute drive to Mendocino so you can get all your firewood ( from town or from the host which cost 10 dollars but goes towards cultural education and events) and what not from there or the gas station up the road across from the inn hours 6am - 7pm. Campground host was super nice gave my girlfriend and I recommendations on trails to hike and really puts attention into cleaning the campgrounds after campers leave. The showers take a dollar in quarters or a token you can purchase from the camp host. We stayed at campsite 3 and although they were pretty close to other campers we had a good time. There are tiny foxes that will steal your food and literally jump on your table and poop all over so keep that in mind when deciding to cook or make a fire late at night. At the moment (March) the Bog trail and the Fern canyon trail are wrecked cause of the storm and are closed down for repairs.
Mar 30, 2024 · Daniel AbramsLovely to visit in the spring. The forget-me-nots and english lawn daisies were blooming everywhere. The campsite was clean, got to fall asleep listening to the brook and frogs. Was at #11 during this most recent visit. I had reported during my stay in December that #11 has some tree maintenance that needs to happen. I even showed one of the rangers what I was talking about then. That doesn't seem to have happened though, because the tree I told them about shed a couple branches while I was there. I was very careful to set up my tent clear of that, but there isn't a ton of space in #11 to escape those potential widow makers.
Apr 06, 2024 · Corseted PirateThis is such a clean, well taken care of campground/park. Restrooms with flush toilets are located in multiple areas, showers are very inexpensive, $1 for 5 minutes. Very peaceful atmosphere, loved the 8.5 mile Fern canyon trail hike. Bridges have been well kept on the hike. Lower sites by the entrance are small and crammed close to each other, not very private, but close to the ocean. The inner sites of Highland Meadows are spaced out further which is better for bigger families or multiple tents. Reservations are a must on weekends since they are always packed. Will be returning here regularly during the weekdays where only a handful of sites are booked.
May 15, 2019 · Lina AdamenkoBooked the Group Campsite. Large Area room for 3 or 4 trailers or multiple cars. The bridge is TIGHT, stick to the 24 to 27 foot max for a travel trailer. Quite spot, hidden away from the wind. Upper main campground only good for smaller trailers or tent camping. Love to go back.
Feb 23, 2022 · Adam NelmsWe camped at Van Damme for two nights and had a great time. The campground is kept very clean (including the bathrooms!). One thing to note is a couple campsites on the upper loop have some trees that were chopped down (I think due to the storms this past year) so there is no longer shade as shown in the booking photos. We booked two of these sites but luckily had a canopy so it worked out. We stayed at sites 62 & 64. Site 64 has room for a small tent (nothing bigger). With the two sites combined we were able to fit two extra large family tents and two 4 person tents. We would definitely stay here again but would either book in the large meadow (if with a large group) or at another site with more shade.
