Paul Dimmick Campground

CA-128, Philo, CA 95466, USA

4.0
Small but charming campground. Sleep under large redwoods and enjoy close access to many nearby trails. This place is best for the camper who did not reserve a spot. These spots are first come first serve. There is no camp host and limited facilities. You so have a fire pit picnic table and room to park and pitch a tent. There is a small canyon but it’s over grown with so much foliage you can’t really get down to the creek. It’s also close to the road so you will hear cars. Lastly there is no cell service in this spot which is not a bad thing. - bartellj

Paul Dimmick Campground Introduce

For those searching "Camping Near Me" in the beautiful redwood region of Northern California, Paul Dimmick Campground offers a rustic and charming option. Situated on CA-128, Philo, CA 95466, USA, and part of the Navarro River Redwoods State Park, this campground, contactable at (707) 937-5804 or mobile +1 707-937-5804, is designed for campers who appreciate simplicity and a direct connection to nature.

Environment: Under the Giants, Beside the River

The environment at Paul Dimmick Campground is defined by its majestic setting "under large redwoods." This provides an iconic Northern California camping experience, with towering trees creating a shaded and serene atmosphere. The campground is located within an "eleven-mile-long redwood tunnel to the sea" along Highway 128, a truly magnificent sight. It's nestled along the Navarro River, specifically at the confluence of the North Fork Navarro River and the Navarro River. This river access is a significant environmental draw, particularly for anglers, canoeists, and kayakers in the late winter and spring, and offers "swimming holes" in the summer months.

The surrounding Navarro River Redwoods State Park spans 660 acres along a 14-mile river corridor, preserving a rich ecosystem of aquatic and terrestrial plants and wildlife. Second-growth redwood groves, sedges along the channel banks, redwood sorrel on the forest floor, and dense stands of western sword ferns, salal, and wild huckleberry contribute to the natural beauty. Wildlife such as raccoons, black-tailed deer, and river-oriented birds like the belted kingfisher can be observed. While reviews mention a "small canyon" that's "over grown with so much foliage you can’t really get down to the creek" in some areas, the overall river access is still available and a highlight.

A key environmental factor to consider is the campground's proximity to Highway 128. While some reviewers state, "it’s also close to the road so you will hear cars," others find that "there isn't much traffic going by so road noise isn't a bother." This suggests that the level of road noise can be subjective or vary depending on traffic volume. The campground is designed to be quiet, and the general atmosphere aims for serenity, encouraging campers to "unwind."

Services and Facilities: Basic, Functional, and Self-Contained

Paul Dimmick Campground is known for its "limited facilities," catering to a more "primitive camping" style. It's best suited for campers who are prepared for a self-sufficient experience. Key services and facilities include:

  • Campsites: The campground has 27 campsites, described as small but charming. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring with a grill, providing the essentials for outdoor living and cooking. The sites offer "room to park and pitch a tent." These sites can accommodate tents, trailers (up to 24 feet), and RVs (up to 30 feet), though not all sites can fit larger vehicles. There are no hookups for RVs or trailers (i.e., no water, electric, or sewer connections).

  • Restrooms: The campground primarily utilizes vault toilets, which are non-flush toilets. Reviews note that these "pit toilets were clean" and "extremely clean, no flies and didn't have a strong odor," indicating good maintenance. While some older information might mention flush bathrooms, recent reviews emphasize the vault toilets. There are no showers available at this campground.

  • Water: Critically, "Water is not available" at the campsites. This means campers must "Bring your own water or filter creek water" for all drinking, cooking, and hygiene needs. However, other sources mention "multiple water spigots throughout the campground for drinking water," suggesting a need for clarification on this point when planning a trip. It's always safest to assume you need to bring your own potable water for rustic sites unless explicitly confirmed by the park directly.

  • Trash and Recycling: While some reviews state there is "trash and recycling there," others note that the park generally asks that you pack out your trash. It is always a good practice to follow "Leave No Trace" principles and pack out everything you pack in.

  • No Camp Host: As a "first come first serve" campground with limited facilities, there is typically "no camp host" on site, meaning campers are largely self-reliant for their needs and problem-solving.

  • Generators: Generators may be used from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. for RVs, though many campers choose not to use them to maintain the quiet atmosphere.

Features: First-Come, First-Serve and Direct River Recreation

Paul Dimmick Campground's operational model is a defining feature: it is exclusively "first come first served." This makes it "best for the camper who did not reserve a spot" and appeals to those who prefer spontaneity over pre-booked arrangements. The cost is generally $25 per night, paid via self-registration. This feature means that while you might "stumble on it" and find "open sites on a Saturday in late June" during some periods, it's advisable to arrive early, especially for weekend stays, to secure a spot.

The campground's direct access to the Navarro River is another significant feature, allowing for various water-based activities. The park is popular with "anglers, canoeists, and kayakers in the late winter and spring," and offers "swimming in the river" during summer. The Navarro River is described as a "great place for swimming," with "numerous swimming holes along the river" and lower water levels from June through August perfect for wading or floating. The opportunity to float down the river in an inner tube until reaching the Pacific Ocean is highlighted as a unique adventure.

For those seeking to disconnect, "there is no cell service in this spot which is not a bad thing," reinforcing the serene escape from modern distractions. This absence of connectivity contributes to the "quiet beautiful scenery with no amenities" experience. The campground is also "close to many nearby trails," allowing for hiking and exploring the majestic redwood forest. Pets are allowed but "must be kept on a leash" (no longer than 6 feet) at all times.

Promotional Information and Planning Your Visit

Paul Dimmick Campground is promoted as a classic, rustic redwood camping experience, particularly for those seeking "Camping Near Me" without the need for reservations. Its appeal lies in its natural beauty, affordability, and the opportunity for spontaneous trips. Information is typically found through California State Parks resources, as it is part of the Navarro River Redwoods State Park. The phone numbers (707) 937-5804 and +1 707-937-5804 can be used for general inquiries or to confirm current conditions and pricing, as these can change. The campground is typically open from May 1st to November 1st, though it's always best to check the latest status from California State Parks.

Prospective campers should prepare thoroughly for a primitive camping experience. This means bringing all necessary potable water, being comfortable with vault toilets, and being prepared for no cell service. While basic amenities like fire rings and picnic tables are provided, campers should bring all their own cooking supplies, lighting, and bedding. Given the first-come, first-serve nature, it's wise to have a backup plan, especially during popular times. Despite the proximity to the road, the "small but charming" nature of the campground and its immersion in the redwoods offer a truly memorable and authentic outdoor experience for those who embrace its simplicity. It's a place where you can enjoy the quiet beauty of nature, with the comforting presence of towering redwoods and the sound of the Navarro River nearby, making it a cherished spot for many who have visited over the years.
