Hunting Island State Park Campground Introduce
For local residents and travelers seeking a "camping near me" experience immersed in the natural beauty of the South Carolina coast, Hunting Island State Park Campground, located on St Helena Island, SC 29920, USA, offers a unique blend of beach access, recreational opportunities, and a rustic camping environment. You can contact the campground by phone at (843) 838-2011 or +1 843-838-2011. Based on recent customer reviews, this campground presents both appealing features and some considerations for potential visitors, particularly regarding campsite privacy and wildlife encounters.
One reviewer who stayed at site #126 described it as "so lovely," accommodating a group of six people in two tents over two nights. This positive initial impression suggests that some campsites within Hunting Island State Park Campground offer a pleasant and enjoyable setting for a group camping experience. However, this reviewer also shared a significant concern regarding wildlife, specifically a raccoon that entered their tent, opened their coolers, and stole several food items. While acknowledging that this is "very common here," the reviewer felt it was an issue that "needs to be tended to" for safety reasons. This highlights the importance of being prepared for wildlife encounters and taking necessary precautions to secure food and belongings when camping in this area.
Another reviewer, a seasoned traveler from Minnesota, provided a more comprehensive assessment of the campground after a three-night stay. They noted that the state park offers a mix of "good private campsites" and "shitty private sites." Their initial experience was on a site with "zero privacy," lacking even a bush to separate them from their close neighbor. This indicates that the level of privacy between campsites can vary significantly within the campground, and some sites may feel quite exposed. However, their subsequent two nights were spent on a better site, and they estimated that about 50 percent of the sites are "great sites that are private and spaced out with vegetation between." This suggests that while some sites offer a desirable level of seclusion, others may not, making campsite selection potentially crucial for a comfortable stay.
The same reviewer characterized the campground as "more rustic for a state park," which could appeal to those seeking a more natural and less developed camping experience. They did note that "the bathrooms where clean," which is a significant positive for any campground. A major highlight of Hunting Island State Park Campground, regardless of the campsite location, is its proximity to the beach. The reviewer stated that "the beach is close regardless of what site you get," and in comparison to about 15 state parks they've stayed at in Florida, the beach here is "great and not packed." This easy access to a potentially uncrowded beach is a significant draw for those looking to enjoy the South Carolina coastline.
Furthermore, Hunting Island State Park Campground stands out for its "awesome exploring" opportunities directly from the campsites, particularly for biking and scootering. The reviewer mentioned "lots of opportunities to explore on bikes or scooters from campsite," indicating a network of trails or paths accessible within and around the campground. Their favorite activity was taking their ebikes/scooters on a scenic five-mile round trip along the beach to the "dead/ghost woods on beach." They described taking paths to the ghost woods and the beach back, encountering no problems and thoroughly enjoying this unique exploration. This highlights a significant recreational feature of the campground and the surrounding park, appealing to those who enjoy active exploration and unique natural landscapes.
In summary, Hunting Island State Park Campground offers a "camping near me" experience with direct access to a great and often uncrowded beach. The park provides opportunities for biking and scootering, allowing for extensive exploration of the island, including the fascinating ghost forest. The bathrooms are reported to be clean. However, potential visitors should be aware that the privacy level of campsites can vary significantly, with some offering good spacing and vegetation while others lack privacy. Additionally, wildlife encounters, such as raccoons actively seeking food, are common and require campers to take precautions.
For local users considering this campground, it would be beneficial to inquire about the specific characteristics of individual campsites when making a reservation, if possible, to try and secure one of the more private and spacious sites. It is also crucial to be prepared for potential interactions with wildlife by properly storing food in secure containers and being mindful of leaving any food or trash accessible. The rustic nature of the campground might appeal to those seeking a more natural setting, and the excellent beach access and biking/scootering trails are significant recreational advantages.
To make the most of a stay at Hunting Island State Park Campground, local campers should consider bringing bicycles or scooters to take advantage of the exploration opportunities. The unique ghost forest along the beach is a must-see attraction accessible directly from the campground. While the potential for less private campsites and wildlife encounters exists, the overall natural beauty, beach access, and recreational activities make Hunting Island State Park Campground a compelling "camping near me" option for those who appreciate a more rustic coastal camping experience.

Hunting Island State Park Campground Reviews
Site #126 was so lovely!! We stayed for 2 nights with 6 total people and 2 tents. I took a star away because a raccoon got INTO our tent, went grocery shopping, and made off with SEVERAL food items. Unzipped our tent, opened our coolers, the hole nine yards! I know this is very common here, but it seems to be an issue that needs to be tended to. Sorry to say because the critter was cute but It’s a problem and not safe.
Mar 17, 2025 · Jody StevelyI'm from Minnesota and I travel the country. This state park has both good private campsites and it has shitty private sites. We stayed 3 nights. 1st site sucked with zero privacy. Not even a bush that separated us from our close neighbor. The next 2 days we had a better site, however there's about 50 percent great sites that are private and spaced out with vegetation between. I went in blind because it was our 1st stay here. In general it's more rustic for a state park. The bathrooms where clean. The beach is close regardless of what site you get compared to about 15 state parks I've stayed at in Florida. Beach is great and not packed. 1 of the main highlights was the biking/scootering opportunities from the campground. Lots of opportunities to explore on bikes or scooters from campsite. Awesome exploring to see. Had a ton of fun exploring outside campground right from are campsite. Our favorite was taking our ebikes/scooters along the beach about 5 miles round trip to the dead/ghost woods on beach. We took paths there and beach back with no problems. A great round trip.
Mar 08, 2025 · Gunflint ExplorerHunting Island State Park Campground is an excellent park to camp right on the ocean. It’s about 14 miles from downtown Beaufort where you can find dining and shopping. There’s a Publix Food Lion, Harris Teeter and Walmart about 12 miles away.Cell phone coverage is one to two bars, depending upon your carrier. I used visible, which operates on Verizon‘s network and had reasonable reception for streaming.I also used a Starlink standard kit for Internet access. The sites have trees and with about 42% obstruction. I was able to get 189 MB download speed. But check your site images when reserving if you plan to use a Starlink. There are plenty of bathrooms and showers that are in good condition and cleaned daily . There’s also a modest camp store. Sites have water and electric, but no sewer. But the real reason you stay here is for the proximity next to the ocean . The low tide goes way out at the north end of the park and you can do some great exploring & shelling., it’s like another world. The beaches are sandy white but are shared with horses. To the south of the campground, the park continues towards the lighthouse and keeps going and going and going. You could hike for miles on the beach without many other people around you.
