Indian Bay Campground Introduce
Looking for "camping near me" that offers stunning waterfront views and a plethora of water-based activities? Indian Bay Campground, located on Indian Bay Campground Rd, Duchesne, UT 84021, USA, might be the perfect destination for your next local camping adventure. Situated directly on the shores of Indian Bay Reservoir, this campground provides a picturesque setting and opportunities for boating, fishing, swimming, and enjoying the natural beauty of Duchesne County.
Environment: Lakeside Beauty with Variable Water Levels
The environment of Indian Bay Campground is predominantly defined by its immediate access to Indian Bay Reservoir. Several reviewers highlight the "absolutely beautiful campsite right in the water," emphasizing the prime waterfront location of many sites. This proximity allows campers to enjoy the lake's scenic views and easily engage in water activities. The presence of "plenty of sky to gaze" also suggests a relatively open environment, ideal for stargazing and enjoying the vastness of the Utah landscape.
However, one review noted that the water level can fluctuate. During a Labor Day weekend stay, the water had receded significantly from the springtime reservation level, creating "lots and lots of beach space." While this provided ample room for tents, it also opened up areas for day-use groups, potentially impacting the privacy and immediate waterfront access for campers in certain sites. This variability in water levels is an important factor for prospective campers to consider, especially when making reservations based on the expectation of a lakeside campsite.
The terrain at the campsites can also vary. One reviewer at site 10 mentioned that the "ground was kind of rough" and recommended bringing a cot or mat for better comfort. This suggests that not all sites may have perfectly smooth or soft ground for tent pitching, so campers should be prepared with appropriate bedding.
While the beauty of the lake is a major draw, one camper mentioned that "bugs were a bit much," acknowledging this as "part of the charm" of being close to the water. Campers should be prepared for the possibility of insects, especially during warmer months, and bring appropriate repellents and protective measures.
Services: Minimal Staff, Essential Amenities
The information regarding services at Indian Bay Campground suggests a somewhat minimalist approach, with one reviewer noting that "the staff was minimal though extremely helpful." This implies that while the campground may not offer a wide array of services, the staff present are dedicated to assisting campers. The availability of specific services is not extensively detailed, but we can infer some based on typical campground offerings and the user reviews:
- Designated Campsites: Numbered sites are mentioned (site 10, sites 4 and 5), indicating designated camping areas for tents.
- Restroom Facilities: Restrooms are available, though one reviewer noted that while they "were kept smelling good," they were "not cleaned very well" and lacked hand sanitizer in the dispensers. This is an important point for campers to be aware of, suggesting they might need to bring their own hygiene supplies.
- No Hookups: One review explicitly states "$25 with no hookups," indicating that the campsites are likely primitive or semi-primitive, without electrical, water, or sewer connections for RVs. This suggests the campground primarily caters to tent campers or RVers who are self-contained.
- Quiet Time Honored: The mention of "quiet time is honored" suggests that the campground management or fellow campers respect the need for peaceful rest during specified hours.
- Potential for Boat Launch/Access: The heavy utilization of the lake with "jet skis and boats" implies that there is likely a boat launch or accessible area for launching watercraft.
The absence of mentions of amenities like showers, laundry facilities, or a camp store suggests that these may not be available at Indian Bay Campground. Campers should plan accordingly and bring all necessary supplies.
Features: Lakeside Activities and Natural Beauty
The primary features of Indian Bay Campground revolve around its stunning lakeside location and the opportunities for water-based recreation:
- Direct Lake Access: Many campsites offer immediate access to the shores of Indian Bay Reservoir, allowing for easy enjoyment of the water.
- Water Activities: The lake is utilized for a variety of activities, including jet skiing, boating, paddleboarding, and kayaking, making it a haven for water sports enthusiasts.
- Fishing: While not explicitly mentioned in the reviews, reservoirs in Utah often offer fishing opportunities, which could be another feature of Indian Bay Campground.
- Beach Area: Depending on the water levels, there can be significant beach space available for sunbathing, playing, and other recreational activities. Children enjoyed "catching crawdads and bugs and splashing in the water" on the beach.
- Stargazing: With "plenty of sky to gaze," the campground likely offers excellent opportunities for stargazing due to potentially low light pollution in the area.
- Wildlife Observation: Being close to the water and natural surroundings, there might be opportunities for observing local wildlife.
The combination of the beautiful lakeside setting and the variety of water activities makes Indian Bay Campground a potentially ideal destination for families and individuals looking for a fun and engaging outdoor experience.

Indian Bay Campground Reviews
Absolutely beautiful campsite right in the water. Bugs were a bit much though that's part of the charm. $25 with no hookups, ground was kind of rough at site 10 so I suggest a cot or mat. People were utilizing the lake with jet skis and boats, paddle boards and kayaks. Plenty of sky to gaze, quiet time is honored and the staff was minimal though extremely helpful.
Aug 21, 2023 · TheGeorge saysWe stayed in sites 4 and 5 over Labor Day weekend which, at the time of my original reservation in the spring, the water was right up to the campsite. The receded water line opened up lots and lots of beach space for tents but it also opened lots of area for day-use groups to take over all the beach between our camp and the water. Other than that though, the campsites are nice and there wasn't a lot of trash, some, but not a lot. The restrooms were kept smelling good but not cleaned very well and there was no hand sanitizer in the dispensers. Luckily, we had a boat and kayaks and paddle boards because that is what makes this place so fun! The kids played endlessly on the beach catching crawdads and bugs and splashing in the water.
Sep 06, 2020 · Kris PaceAlways enjoy being at starvation. Fishing is really good this year the water is clear, camp grounds could use some TLC. Broken glass is all over in the sand, definitely recommend water shoes. As a mom of 3 tiny humans camping so close to the beach you want to take your shoes off and get your toes buried in the sand.. the amount of broken glass that is through the camp grounds prevents that which is vwhy I rate this 4 stars. Otherwise, I adapt throw water shoes on my v kids and we enjoy every minute of every day at starvation.
Jul 29, 2022 · Maddison SorensonI should give it ONE STAR so people will stay away! We love this place. The varying wayer levels through the season make it a new place every time. Great sand (cockle-burrs . . . In late summer), decent rocks. When the water is higher the under-water beach is pleasant to the feet. At this level (earyl Sept.) It is a little sticky (sticks and leaves debris).
