Isinours Station Campground

29604 246th St, Preston, MN 55965, USA

3.0
There are only 3 campsites here with fire pits and only 3 picnic tables although there could be at least 8 sites. This was in better condition 2 summers ago with more tables and pits that seem to have been stolen or broken. It is not maintained well because there are no fees. There are only 2-3 sites with any shade, making it super hot for a tent with no fans. Not great for hammocks with few trees close together. 2 of the shaded sites you have to hike your stuff up a hill that says “No Motorized Vehicles” to get to, so bring a wagon or set up in a sunny site. The water pump is broken, so bring your own water. 2 stinky vault toilets that are emptied only twice a year. Following the brown road signs is a better idea than following Google Maps or you will miss the turn in. - Chelsea Ketchum

Isinours Station Campground Introduce

For local users seeking a potentially budget-friendly "camping near me" option along the scenic Root River Trail in Minnesota, Isinours Station Campground, located at 29604 246th St, Preston, MN 55965, USA, presents a rustic and somewhat basic choice. Based on recent customer reviews, it's essential for prospective campers to be aware of the limited amenities and current conditions to ensure a suitable experience.

The environment surrounding Isinours Station Campground is likely characterized by its proximity to the Root River Trail, a well-known paved trail popular for biking and hiking through the picturesque bluff country of southeastern Minnesota. This suggests a setting with natural beauty, potentially including wooded areas, rolling hills, and the river itself. The campground's location along the trail makes it a convenient stop for those exploring the area by bike or on foot, seeking an overnight "camping near me" option.

However, the reviews paint a picture of a campground with minimal services and some maintenance issues. One reviewer noted that there are "only 3 campsites here with fire pits and only 3 picnic tables," despite the potential for at least eight sites. This limited number of designated campsites and amenities could lead to crowding if multiple groups arrive, especially during peak seasons. The same reviewer also mentioned a decline in conditions, stating that the campground "was in better condition 2 summers ago with more tables and pits that seem to have been stolen or broken," indicating a lack of consistent maintenance.

A significant drawback highlighted in the reviews is the lack of a functioning water pump. One camper explicitly stated, "The water pump is broken, so bring your own water," and another echoed this, calling it a "real bummer," especially given the limited number of non-RV campgrounds along the Root River Trail. This lack of a potable water source means that campers must be entirely self-sufficient in providing their own water for drinking, cooking, and sanitation.

Shade is another limited resource at Isinours Station Campground. According to one review, "There are only 2-3 sites with any shade, making it super hot for a tent with no fans." This is an important consideration, particularly during the warmer months, as prolonged sun exposure can make tent camping uncomfortable. The scarcity of trees close together also makes it "not great for hammocks."

Adding to the challenges, two of the shaded sites are located uphill, requiring campers to hike their gear to the location. A sign reportedly says "No Motorized Vehicles," so transporting equipment to these potentially desirable, shaded spots necessitates bringing a wagon or being prepared for manual carrying. The alternative is setting up camp in one of the sunny sites.

Sanitation facilities at Isinours Station Campground consist of "2 stinky vault toilets that are emptied only twice a year." This infrequent maintenance schedule raises concerns about the cleanliness and odor of the toilets, potentially impacting the overall camping experience, especially during periods of higher use.

The campground's lack of fees is mentioned as a reason for the limited maintenance ("It is not maintained well because there are no fees"). While free camping can be appealing to budget-conscious travelers, the trade-off at Isinours Station Campground appears to be minimal upkeep and limited amenities.

Navigation to the campground can also be tricky. One reviewer advises that "Following the brown road signs is a better idea than following Google Maps or you will miss the turn in." This suggests that relying solely on GPS navigation might lead to confusion, and paying attention to local signage is crucial for finding the campground.

Despite these limitations, one reviewer did note that the site offers "numerous flat spots for tents," which is a positive aspect for tent campers looking for relatively even ground to set up their shelters.

In terms of services, Isinours Station Campground offers very basic amenities: a limited number of fire pits and picnic tables, and vault toilets with infrequent servicing. There is no potable water source on-site, and shade is scarce. The lack of fees means there are likely no staff on-site for assistance or maintenance.

The features of Isinours Station Campground are primarily its location along the Root River Trail, its status as a free campground, and the availability of some flat spots for tents. However, these features are counterbalanced by the limited number of campsites and amenities, the lack of shade and potable water, the infrequent maintenance of the vault toilets, and potential navigation difficulties.

Regarding promotional information, as a free campground with minimal services, there are likely no formal promotions. The primary draw is the lack of fees and its location along a popular recreational trail. For local users seeking a no-cost "camping near me" option and who are fully prepared for a rustic experience with limited amenities, Isinours Station Campground might be considered. However, it's crucial to be aware of the current conditions and come fully prepared with water and other necessities.

For local users considering Isinours Station Campground for "camping near me," it is essential to weigh the benefits of free camping and its location on the Root River Trail against the significant limitations in amenities and maintenance. Be prepared to bring your own water, manage in potentially sunny conditions, and be aware of the limited number of campsites and the state of the facilities. If you prioritize cost savings and trail access over comfort and convenience, and are fully self-sufficient, this rustic campground might be an option. However, for those seeking more developed amenities and reliable services, alternative campgrounds in the area would likely be more suitable.
