Jakway Forest Campground Introduce
Looking for "camping near me" in the Aurora, Iowa area? Jakway Forest Campground, located at 2791 136th St, Aurora, IA 50607, USA, offers a multifaceted outdoor experience that combines camping with historical exploration and recreational activities. While a direct phone number isn't provided in the information, this introduction will detail the environment, services, and features based on recent customer reviews available online.
Jakway Forest Campground is described as a beautifully mowed county park characterized by large, mature trees lining a paved highway. The park is thoughtfully divided into distinct areas, each offering unique attractions. The first part of the park is particularly family-friendly, featuring a playscape with swings, picnic tables, a large pavilion, horseshoe pits, a digger sand tool, and a frisbee golf course. For convenience, there are also bathrooms, a water pump, recycling facilities, and benches placed throughout this section. Accessibility is also considered, with a handicapped parking space available.
Adding a touch of history and culture, this area also houses the historic Jakway-Richardson house and barn. These structures offer a glimpse into the past and provide an educational element to your visit. The presence of signage suggests that visitors can learn more about the historical significance of these buildings. This blend of recreational and historical features makes Jakway Forest Campground a unique destination for local users seeking more than just a typical campground.
Moving into the second part of the park, you'll find a large circular drive campground. This area is specifically designed for camping, with some existing campfire rings already in place, making it easier for campers to enjoy a traditional campfire experience. Essential camping amenities are also available, including a shower house and an "RV dump" area, catering to both tent campers and those with recreational vehicles. The circular drive layout might offer easy access to the campsites and these facilities.
The third section of Jakway Forest Campground caters to nature lovers with mowed, casual hiking paths that wind through the woods alongside a creek. These trails are enhanced by signage that guides visitors and provides descriptive information about the natural environment. This offers a great opportunity for leisurely strolls and exploring the local flora and fauna. The presence of a creek adds to the scenic beauty and tranquility of the hiking experience.
One reviewer mentioned a "green slimey pond" in the woods as the only negative aspect of the park, expressing a desire for the conservation authorities to manage it more effectively, viewing it as a "missed opportunity." While this is a point of concern for one visitor, it's important to note that overall, the park receives positive feedback for its maintenance and range of features.
For added security and assistance, there is a "park ranger" living on the premise. This can provide campers with a sense of security and a point of contact for any questions or concerns during their stay. Additionally, the review notes that the nearest gas station is located 4 miles away in Lamont, which is also very close to Backbone State Park, the oldest state park in Iowa. This proximity could be a bonus for those looking to explore other natural attractions in the area.
Another visitor described Jakway Forest Campground as a "nice little historic park" that was formerly an old town called Mudville. This reinforces the historical aspect of the location. This reviewer also highlighted the inclusion of an old house and buildings with a garden and prairie area, further emphasizing the historical and natural elements of the park. Additionally, they noted the presence of a "nice little playground area," picnic tables, and restrooms, echoing the family-friendly amenities mentioned by the first reviewer.
In summary, Jakway Forest Campground offers local users searching for "camping near me" a well-maintained and diverse outdoor experience. Its features include a family-friendly area with a playground, picnic facilities, and recreational games; a dedicated campground with campfire rings, a shower house, and an RV dump; and scenic hiking trails through the woods along a creek. The historical Jakway-Richardson house and barn, along with the park's past as the town of Mudville, add a unique dimension to a visit here. While one reviewer pointed out a concern about a pond, the overall sentiment is positive, highlighting the beauty and range of amenities available. For those looking for a blend of recreation, history, and natural beauty in their local camping options, Jakway Forest Campground is definitely worth considering.

Jul 02, 2021 · Amy KNice little historic park (formerly and old town called Mudville). Includes an old house and buildings with garden and prairie area. Nice little playground area, picnic tables, and restrooms.
Aug 29, 2024 · Deborah LeamingOnly some spots have water, but lots have power hookups. Saw two 20 and 30 amp sockets at our spot but none higher. Sign said wifi, but couldn't get it to work, (although not a nessisity because camping). Fire pits have grates for cooking and firewood is stocked and for sale. Dogs loved the trails.
