As featured on platforms like "Camping Near Me," Jumbo Rocks Campground offers a truly unique outdoor experience, characterized by its stunning geological formations, vast desert landscapes, and unparalleled opportunities for exploration and stargazing. Located directly within the National Park at Jumbo Rocks Campground, Twentynine Palms, CA 92277, USA, this campground provides a remarkable blend of natural beauty and recreational activities, making it a must-visit for those seeking an immersive desert adventure.
An Amazing Landscape of Giant Rock Formations
The overwhelming sentiment from visitors is that Jumbo Rocks Campground is an "amazing" place. The very name of the campground hints at its most distinctive feature: colossal, rounded rock formations that dominate the landscape. These gigantic boulders create a surreal and awe-inspiring environment, offering a playground for exploration and providing a dramatic backdrop for campsites. The sheer scale and unique shapes of the jumbo rocks make this campground unlike any other, fostering a sense of wonder and adventure for all who visit.
Rustic Desert Camping with Essential Amenities
While the beauty of Jumbo Rocks Campground earns it high praise, it's important to be aware of the rustic nature of the camping experience. As one reviewer candidly points out, there is "no power or water" available at the campsites. This necessitates self-sufficiency in terms of water supply and power needs, encouraging a more traditional and off-grid camping approach. Despite this lack of utility hookups, each campsite is equipped with essential amenities for a comfortable stay, including "fire pits & bbq grills." These provisions allow campers to enjoy the quintessential outdoor experiences of cooking over an open flame and gathering around a campfire under the desert stars.
Picturesque Setting with Great Views and Hiking Trails
The campground is described as "picturesque," emphasizing its scenic beauty. Campers can expect "great views" of the surrounding desert landscape, framed by the impressive rock formations. Furthermore, Jumbo Rocks Campground offers access to "great hiking trails," allowing visitors to explore the unique flora, fauna, and geological wonders of Joshua Tree National Park up close. These trails cater to various skill levels, providing opportunities for both leisurely strolls and more challenging hikes amidst the stunning desert environment.
Unparalleled Stargazing Opportunities
One of the most significant draws of desert camping, and particularly Joshua Tree National Park, is the exceptional stargazing. Far from the light pollution of urban areas, Jumbo Rocks Campground offers incredibly dark night skies, making it an ideal location for observing constellations, planets, and the Milky Way. The clear desert air further enhances the visibility of celestial wonders, providing an unforgettable astronomical experience for campers.
A Unique Blend of Outdoor Experience and Art
Adding an unexpected dimension to the camping experience, one reviewer notes that Jumbo Rocks Campground combines "an outdoor experience with an art exhibit and playground." This intriguing description suggests that the natural rock formations themselves create an artistic and playful environment, inviting exploration and imaginative interaction. The landscape becomes a natural sculpture garden and a unique playground for those who enjoy scrambling and climbing over rocks (while being mindful of safety and park regulations).
Variety in Campsite Sizes and Locations
It's important for prospective campers to be aware that "some of the campsites are very small, essentially on the main road, but some have very large spaces away from the main road." This highlights the variability in campsite size and privacy within Jumbo Rocks Campground. The reviewer advises campers to "check the location of the campsite before you just reserve any campsite number" to ensure that their chosen site meets their needs and preferences regarding size, seclusion, and proximity to park roads.
Important Considerations: Wildlife, Water, and Communication
Several crucial awareness points are raised by reviewers that potential visitors must heed:
- Wildlife: Jumbo Rocks Campground is home to various desert wildlife. Visitors should be aware that "there is wildlife in the campsite," including potential encounters with coyotes (which generally "kept to itself" in one instance), tortoises, and snakes. Campers should adhere to park guidelines regarding food storage and wildlife interaction to ensure their safety and the well-being of the animals. The presence of "cool little lizards and plant life" adds to the natural charm of the area.
- Water: A critical point is that campers must "bring all the water you will need" as "there's no running water at the camps." This necessitates careful planning for water consumption for drinking, cooking, and hygiene throughout the stay. Additionally, the reviewer notes that "the bathrooms often have bees," which is a factor to consider when using these facilities.
- Phone Signal: Connectivity can be challenging in this remote environment. "There's no phone signal," so relying on mobile communication for emergencies may not be feasible. The reviewer strongly recommends having the "HazAdapt safety app" on your phone, which can provide guidance on how to handle emergencies in the absence of phone service.

Jumbo Rocks Campground Reviews
This place is amazing. I am tempted to downgrade to 4 stars because there is no power or water there, but the place is so amazing it is still 5 stars in my book! Great views, great campsites with plenty of parking, fire pits & bbq grills at each site. Fairly secluded, pcturesque, great hiking trails, star gazing... what more could you want for a desert campground.
Apr 29, 2025 · Ryan ShermanCombine an outdoor experience with an art exhibit and playground, and you get this phenomenal camp site! We will absolutely return! You just want to climb all over the place! Some of the campsites are very small, essentially on the main road, but some have very large spaces away from the main road. Check the location of the campsite before you just reserve any campsite number.Be aware:🐺 There is wildlife in the campsite. We had a coyote visitor early in the morning, but it kept to itself. There's signs for tortoises and snakes. Lots of cool little lizards and plant life.🚱 Bring all the water you will need - there's no running water at the camps, and the bathrooms often have bees.🤳There's no phone signal, so I recommend having the HazAdapt safety app on your phone so that you know how to handle emergencies out there.
May 01, 2025 · Virginia KatzThey have ruined the camping experience. Well done! No rock climbing at the campsite are you crazy? That was my attraction for camping at Jumbo rocks. For people who like to climb. Now you gotta go online and pick out a site that is never available and never actually gets used that night. What a joke. This used to be my favorite area to camp. Why is everything going backwards? I’ve been going there for 30+ years, When it used to be $7 dollars.
Apr 24, 2025 · Paul MIn September 2022, my friends and I stayed here for my bachelor party. It was a great experience! Tons of places to explore and there is a hiking trail that leads directly to Skull Rock. The sites vary in size and privacy, but most people keep to themselves anyway. I would absolutely stay here again. Too much to see and explore!
Apr 25, 2025 · Corey KruegerLots of fun campsites nestled among the jumbo rocks. Campsites vary significantly in size and privacy. Some sites are tent camping only with vehicle parking and a short ~30ft walk in. Is tend to be more cramped with close neighbors. The 1.7 mi Skull Rock Loop gives a good overview of the area. Good for all ages!
