KICCO - Chuckwagon Campsite Introduce
For local outdoor enthusiasts seeking a truly rustic "camping near me" experience, KICCO - Chuckwagon Campsite, located at QR57+JM, Lake Wales, FL 33898, USA, offers a unique opportunity for primitive camping. Based on available customer reviews, this campsite provides a remote and quiet environment for those prepared for self-sufficient camping.
One of the most notable features of KICCO - Chuckwagon Campsite is that it is free. This makes it an exceptionally budget-friendly option for campers looking to immerse themselves in nature without incurring camping fees. However, this also means that campers should expect a completely primitive experience with no provided amenities.
According to a review, it's crucial to "come prepared" as there are "no bathrooms, water, or electric" at the campsite. This highlights the need for campers to be entirely self-sufficient, bringing their own water supply, portable toilet facilities, and any necessary power sources like solar chargers or battery packs. This type of camping is best suited for individuals and groups with experience in primitive camping and a thorough understanding of Leave No Trace principles.
Navigating to the campsite is described as "an odd place to get to since you travel through 2 gates to make it happen," but one reviewer assures that it is "well worth it." This suggests a degree of remoteness that contributes to the quiet and secluded atmosphere of the campsite. Local users seeking an escape from more developed campgrounds might find the journey and the resulting tranquility appealing.
Upon arrival, it's important to be aware of potential environmental conditions, particularly during the rainy season. One reviewer noted that "almost everything is underwater" upon their arrival during the rainy season. While they also mentioned that "the camping area is not underwater," this highlights the importance of checking weather forecasts and potentially local conditions before planning a trip, especially during wetter times of the year. The same reviewer also pointed out "some dangers" such as "fallen tree limbs," indicating that the natural environment, while appealing, may also present certain hazards that campers should be mindful of.
Another significant environmental factor mentioned is the presence of "absolutely horrendous" mosquitoes. Florida is known for its mosquito populations, especially in more natural and potentially waterlogged areas. Campers planning a visit to KICCO - Chuckwagon Campsite should be exceptionally well-prepared with insect repellent, mosquito netting for sleeping areas, and appropriate clothing to minimize exposure.
The availability of water is a critical consideration for primitive camping. One review explicitly states that "the water that is supposed to be provided in a tank is non existent." This reinforces the necessity for campers to bring their entire water supply for drinking, cooking, and hygiene. Relying on any potential on-site water sources is not advisable based on this feedback.
Despite the lack of amenities and the potential environmental challenges, the human element at KICCO - Chuckwagon Campsite seems to be a positive aspect. One reviewer praised the "super friendly and helpful" hosts, noting that they "chatted with them for quite awhile and couldn't ask for anyone better to greet you at the gate." This suggests that while the camping is primitive, there may be hosts present who can provide guidance or assistance upon arrival, potentially at one of the entry gates.
A crucial piece of information for anyone considering camping at KICCO - Chuckwagon Campsite is the requirement to "check online to get your free permit." This indicates that while the camping itself is free, there is a process to obtain the necessary permission, likely through a website or online system. Local users interested in camping here must ensure they have secured this free permit before their visit to avoid any issues.
In summary, KICCO - Chuckwagon Campsite offers a unique opportunity for free and remote primitive camping near Lake Wales, Florida. The environment is natural and potentially subject to seasonal conditions like rain and mosquitoes. There are no provided amenities such as bathrooms, water, or electricity, requiring campers to be fully self-sufficient and prepared. While navigating to the site involves passing through gates, the experience is described as quiet and worthwhile. The presence of friendly and helpful hosts at the gate is a potential bonus. Importantly, a free permit must be obtained online prior to camping. This campsite is best suited for experienced primitive campers who appreciate solitude and are fully equipped to handle a no-amenities camping environment.

KICCO - Chuckwagon Campsite Reviews
Upon arrival, almost everything is underwater but it is raining season. No camp host. Luckily my family had been there before and know where to go and how to get in. The camping area is not underwater so that's a plus but there is some dangers. Fallen tree limbs. The mosquitoes are absolutely horrendous. The water that is supposed to be provided in a tank is non existent.

Jan 17, 2023 · Alex ThomasMaybe it's just me, but I had trouble finding this site at first. When driving in on River Ranch rd, you have to pass through the Westgate (dude ranch / resort / casino) main gate & guard shack (this threw me off) before you turn right on Kicco Grade rd. Hosts are super helpful & friendly!Large oak trees dotted with pink and gray lichen provide visitors with beautiful scenery and plentiful shade. gravity-defying airplants and spanish moss cling to their gnarled limbs while young palm trees search for sunlight below. crawling along the canopy floor like wooden snakes, trunks explode into thick patches of dark green palm fronds, reaching upwards only in the sunniest of spots.
