Klipchuck Campground

State Rte 20, Mazama, WA 98833, USA

4.0
Great place to. boondock. No water, when we visit for some reason. No reservations needed, being a mile and half off the highway, made it nice and quiet. Sitting an elevation at about 2,900 ft. Helped with the summer heat. No a/c was needed. Easy access to Early Winters creek, with a few other trails to explore. There was no real mosquito problem to speak of. We will be visiting again. - Perry Roth

Klipchuck Campground Introduce

For local outdoor enthusiasts seeking a serene and off-the-beaten-path "camping near me" experience in the Mazama, Washington area, Klipchuck Campground presents an appealing option. Located off State Route 20, approximately a mile and a half from the highway, this campground offers a tranquil boondocking environment with easy access to natural beauty and recreational opportunities. While it may lack some developed amenities, its quiet setting, proximity to trails and Early Winters Creek, and potential for free off-season camping make it a noteworthy destination for those who appreciate a more rustic and self-sufficient camping experience. For inquiries, you can contact them at (509) 996-4000 or +1 509-996-4000.

Environment: Quiet Seclusion at a Comfortable Elevation

Klipchuck Campground's environment is characterized by its peacefulness and relative seclusion. Being situated a mile and a half away from the main highway (State Route 20) significantly reduces traffic noise, contributing to a quiet and relaxing atmosphere. This makes it an ideal spot for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle and immerse themselves in the sounds of nature. The campground's elevation of approximately 2,900 feet offers a welcome respite from summer heat, often negating the need for air conditioning and providing cooler temperatures for more comfortable camping during warmer months. The surrounding terrain likely features the natural beauty of the North Cascades, with potential for shade from trees and a generally forested environment.

A notable environmental feature is the easy access to Early Winters Creek. The presence of a creek nearby often enhances the camping experience, providing opportunities for gentle streamside walks, the soothing sounds of flowing water, and potentially some water-related activities (though the availability and suitability for such activities are not specified in the reviews). Additionally, the campground serves as a gateway to a few other trails, suggesting that hikers and nature enthusiasts will find opportunities for exploration right from the campsite.

Services and Amenities: Embracing the Boondocking Style

Based on the customer reviews, Klipchuck Campground leans towards a boondocking style of camping, meaning it offers minimal developed amenities. One reviewer explicitly mentions "no water" during their visit, indicating that campers should plan to bring their own potable water supply for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. It is advisable to confirm the current water situation when contacting the campground, as availability might vary seasonally or due to other factors.

Despite the lack of water, one positive aspect mentioned is the presence of a bathroom that was reported as cleaned and fully stocked with toilet paper during an off-season visit in November. This suggests that some basic sanitary facilities are provided and maintained, at least during certain times of the year. However, the type of bathroom (e.g., vault toilet, flush toilet) is not specified.

Another key service aspect is the absence of a reservation system. The review states "no reservations needed," which can be advantageous for those who prefer more spontaneous trips or are unsure of their exact arrival time. However, during peak seasons, this might also mean that campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so arriving early could be beneficial.

It's important for potential visitors to be prepared for a more self-sufficient camping experience at Klipchuck Campground, given the likely lack of amenities such as hookups for water, electricity, or sewer. This makes it well-suited for tent campers and RVers who are equipped for dry camping.

Features: Tranquility, Trail Access, and Potential Off-Season Savings

The standout features of Klipchuck Campground are its tranquility, convenient access to hiking trails, and the potential for free camping during the off-season. The quiet setting, attributed to its location off the main highway, is a significant draw for those seeking a peaceful escape into nature. The easy access to Early Winters Creek and a few other trails directly from the campground is a major advantage for hikers and outdoor explorers. The proximity to the Maple Pass hike, as indicated by the photos shared by a reviewer, further highlights the area's appeal for hiking enthusiasts, although the trailhead for Maple Pass might be a short drive from the campground itself.

Another notable feature is the potential for free camping during the off-season, as mentioned by a visitor who stayed in November and incurred no fees. This could make Klipchuck Campground an incredibly attractive option for budget-conscious campers willing to brave the cooler weather and potentially more challenging conditions of the late fall or winter months. However, it's crucial to verify the fee structure and operating seasons by contacting the provided phone number, as off-season conditions and fee policies can change.

The elevation of approximately 2,900 feet can also be considered a feature, as it provides a natural cooling effect during the summer months. The absence of a significant mosquito problem, as reported by one reviewer, can greatly enhance the comfort of the outdoor experience, especially during warmer seasons when mosquitoes can be prevalent in other areas.
