Kruger Campground Introduce
For local outdoor enthusiasts in search of "camping near me" that combines a rustic camping experience with opportunities for hiking, Kruger Campground, situated at 20462 County Rd 81, Wabasha, MN 55981, USA, presents a noteworthy option. Based on recent visitor feedback, this campground offers a natural environment with both positive and potentially challenging aspects to consider for your next camping adventure.
The environment at Kruger Campground is described as "very rustic," suggesting a natural and relatively undeveloped setting. This could appeal to campers who prefer a more traditional outdoor experience away from highly manicured campgrounds. The presence of trails indicates opportunities for exploration and immersion in nature. One reviewer noted some trails appeared "overgrown or not groomed too well," while another who completed the 5+ mile Campground loop described it as "well maintained" with "pretty overlooks" and "2 nice hills for a cardio." This suggests that trail conditions might vary, and it could be beneficial to inquire about the current state of specific trails before planning extensive hikes. The mention of both potentially overgrown and well-maintained trails implies a diverse hiking experience might be available, catering to different preferences and fitness levels. Additionally, the observation of some "black top" trails suggests a variety of trail surfaces, potentially offering easier walking options.
In terms of services and facilities, Kruger Campground is reported to have "pit toilets," indicating a more basic level of restroom amenity compared to flush toilets or shower facilities. This aligns with the "rustic" character of the campground. One visitor mentioned not seeing any maps of the area during their brief visit, which could be a consideration for those planning to hike and explore the trails. It would be advisable to inquire about the availability of maps or trail information upon arrival or perhaps look for online resources beforehand. The narrowness of the drive areas within the campground was also noted, with the reviewer suggesting it might "probly not a good area for a motor home." This is an important consideration for campers with larger vehicles, who may need to assess the accessibility of campsites and roadways within the campground.
A significant feature highlighted in the reviews is the presence of hiking trails. The 5+ mile Campground loop is specifically mentioned as a well-maintained trail offering scenic overlooks and some elevation changes for a more challenging hike. This suggests that Kruger Campground is a destination that caters to those who enjoy walking and exploring nature. The varied reports on trail maintenance indicate that conditions can change, so it's wise to be prepared for potentially uneven or overgrown sections, and perhaps check recent trail conditions from other hikers or the campground itself if possible. The mention of a downed tree on one part of the trail, which was navigable, further emphasizes the natural and potentially evolving state of the trails.
An important, albeit unexpected, feature mentioned by one hiker is the presence of a shooting range in the valley near the trail. The sound of gunshots initially caused concern, with the hikers mistaking it for hunting season. However, they clarified that there was "no worries tho." This is a unique aspect of the environment that potential campers should be aware of. While it didn't pose a direct threat to the hikers, the noise from the shooting range might impact the tranquility of certain areas of the campground or trails at times. If peace and quiet are a top priority, it might be worth inquiring about the operating hours and proximity of the shooting range to campsites when making reservations or upon arrival.

In conclusion, Kruger Campground near Wabasha, MN, offers a rustic camping experience in a natural environment with hiking trails. Local users seeking "camping near me" should be aware that the facilities include pit toilets, and drive areas may be narrow, potentially posing challenges for larger vehicles. While some trails may be overgrown, others, like the 5+ mile loop, are reported to be well-maintained with scenic views. Kruger Campground Reviews
Took a quick drive through to see if it would be someplace we would want to camp in the future. We didn't hike any of the trails. No time. It looked very rustic with pit toilets. Some of the trails looked overgrowen or not groomed too well. Look like they had some black top ones also. May change my rating if we come back and camp. Did not see any maps of the area. The drive areas are also very narrow. Probly not a good area for a motor home.
Oct 04, 2020 · chris kemperMy friend & I drove over from LaCrosse area for a different hike. We did the 5+ miles Campground loop counter clockwise. 2 nice hills for a cardio, pretty overlooks. Trail well maintained. There is one downed tree on the back side but we had no trouble navigating the trail although we did have the hike up in Alltrails. NOTE: there is a shooting range in the valley near the trail. We initially though we were hiking during a hunting season when we heard shots. No worries tho. We ate at Herb + Arrow in Wabasha after & highly recommend that delightful restaurant!
Dec 19, 2024 · Ellen HansonFound this campground after finding Frontenac State Park (always full). I rolled in at dusk and set up in no time. The campgrounds are relatively free from outside noise. Apparently the bugs are pretty bad in wet years but in early September, they were not bad at all. Make sure you check both loops for open sites. Pick one away from the main outhouses, though. Bring cash or check. $14 at the time of my stay. Each site has a fire ring and table. No other amenities.
Sep 13, 2017 · Wyatt CraneWe had the whole campground to ourselves and really enjoyed it -- it was a bit buggy with the mosquitoesWe were in a teardrop trailer and had plenty of space to get in/out but I'm not sure how a larger RV would be able to manage as the road to campground is quite narrowThe camping spots are well spaced from each other and have picnic tables/fire pits. The pit toilets were surprisingly clean
