Leader Lake Campground Introduce
For local residents in Washington State exploring "camping near me," Leader Lake Campground, located at 22441 State Rte 20 in Okanogan, WA 98840, USA, presents an attractive option for lakefront camping. Based on recent customer reviews, this campground offers the significant benefit of being free with a Discover Pass, coupled with opportunities for fishing and swimming in Leader Lake. The campground's layout around the lake provides a degree of privacy for campers, making it suitable for families and couples seeking a more secluded experience. However, potential visitors should also be aware of certain environmental conditions and the state of the facilities.
The environment of Leader Lake Campground is primarily defined by its location along Leader Lake. The reviews highlight the easy access to camping spots directly on the lake, which is a major draw for those who enjoy waterfront camping. One reviewer noted that even when the water level is "pretty low," the fishing remains "great," indicating that the lake supports a healthy fish population and is a worthwhile destination for anglers. Another reviewer described the lake as "nice and clean" once past the "weed forest" along the shoreline, suggesting that while there might be some vegetation near the edges, the main body of the lake offers pleasant conditions for swimming and other water activities.
A key feature of Leader Lake Campground is its size and the distribution of camping locations around the lake. This dispersed layout allows for "quite few locations designated for camping," which, according to a reviewer, provides for privacy when camping with family or as a couple. This sense of seclusion can significantly enhance the camping experience, offering a more intimate connection with nature and a respite from crowded campgrounds. The ability to find a spot away from other campers is a significant advantage for those seeking tranquility.
In terms of services and facilities, the information from the reviews is somewhat limited and includes both positive and negative aspects. One reviewer mentioned the presence of a "pit toilet" but described it as "disgusting," indicating a potential lack of maintenance or cleanliness. This is a crucial piece of information for potential visitors who prioritize clean and well-maintained restroom facilities. The other reviewer mentioned "garbage containers," which is a positive sign for waste management within the campground, helping to keep the area clean.
A significant benefit of Leader Lake Campground is that it is "free with discover pass." The Washington State Discover Pass provides access to state parks and other recreation lands managed by the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission, the Washington Department of Natural Resources, and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. The fact that camping at Leader Lake is free with this pass makes it a very affordable option for local users who already possess or are willing to purchase a Discover Pass. This can be a major promotional point, especially for budget-conscious campers.
The views from Leader Lake Campground are described as "incredible" by one reviewer, suggesting that the area offers scenic beauty that enhances the overall camping experience. This could include views of the lake itself, the surrounding landscape, and potentially wildlife. The combination of lake access and beautiful scenery makes for a potentially very rewarding camping trip.
It's also noted that the lake is "fairly frequented by other campers and locals for swimming/fishing." This indicates that while the dispersed camping locations offer privacy, the lake itself is a popular spot for recreational activities. Campers should be prepared to share the lake with others who are also enjoying swimming and fishing, particularly during peak seasons or weekends.
Promotional aspects of Leader Lake Campground would emphasize its free camping (with Discover Pass), easy lake access, great fishing opportunities (even in lower water levels), the nice and clean lake (past the shoreline weeds), incredible views, and the privacy afforded by the multiple camping locations around the lake. These are all significant draws for local users seeking an affordable and enjoyable lakefront camping experience with a degree of seclusion.
However, any promotional material should also objectively include the potential drawbacks mentioned in the reviews. The possibility of low water levels affecting the lake's usability and the reported "disgusting" condition of the pit toilet are important pieces of information that potential visitors need to be aware of. While the garbage containers are a positive, the lack of detail about other amenities (such as potable water, fire pits, or picnic tables) suggests that the campground might offer only very basic facilities.
Local users considering Leader Lake Campground for their next "camping near me" adventure should weigh the benefits of free lakefront camping, privacy, fishing, and scenic views against the potential downsides of low water levels and poorly maintained restroom facilities. If having direct lake access for swimming and fishing in a relatively private setting at no cost (with a Discover Pass) is a priority, and if campers are prepared to manage with potentially rudimentary restroom facilities, Leader Lake Campground could be a great choice. It would be advisable to check recent conditions and perhaps bring their own portable toilet or be prepared for the existing facilities. Overall, Leader Lake Campground offers a unique and budget-friendly lakefront camping experience in the Okanogan region of Washington State.

Leader Lake Campground Reviews
Love this place! The water is pretty low right now but it's still great fishing! The campground is big with quite few locations around the lake designated for camping which allows for privacy when camping with your family or even with just your sweetheart 😉 I highly recommend this campground!
Sep 24, 2024 · Angela GahimerEasy to get to camping spots right on the lake. Free with discover pass. Lake was nice and clean just past the weed forest along the shoreline. Pit toilet was disgusting. Views incredible. Fairly frequented by other campers and locals for swimming/fishing.
Aug 12, 2022 · Alison BrowningGreat campground close to Omak! We stayed here for the stampede and it was a quiet location. Would not recommend being downwind of the bathroom though for some reason there was a strong smell when the wind blew that was not pleasant! Would also not swim here the water has a good amount of bacteria.
Aug 15, 2023 · Jesse SteeleGreat medium size lake, fishing was great from shore, plenty of areas to fish from, very clean DNR campground with vaulted toilets, camping spaces (some at the lake shore) and fire pits. bring some worms and catch blue gill and perch all day long. We had the entire lake to ourselves last (2019) October during the second weekend of general hunting season.
May 04, 2020 · Jeremy TellesboStopped in here while on a motorcycle ride, riding the WABDR. Small lake with a campground. Stopped in on a Monday evening. There were a couple people around the lake. The campground was empty. 7 spots. Some spots smaller than others. Pine trees all around. Can hear the stream down below the campground. Fire pits and picnic tables at each site. No water. One pit toilet that was fairly clean and had a good stock of TP. I ended up the only camper, all night. I could hear cars passing along the highway, as the campground is only 1/4 mile away. Headed dogs barking in the night too, from the nearby houses. Otherwise, I liked the campground.
