Longleaf Campground

Hopkins, SC 29061, USA

4.0
Congaree:04/04-07 Longleaf # 11We sweat buckets just putting up the tent. As suspected it was like hiking through Florida- but a thousand times bigger and better - I didn’t expect to love this campground or park, but I did. The evenings were splendid and it was worth the short drive up to walk down the boardwalk - or just use the flushing toilet- one is left open overnight, which is great if dinner didn’t agree with your guts. Morning light brought all the sounds of park to life; unfortunately that included all the children- and there were many. Also saw my first tick and learned how not to remove it; quickly became an amateur tick identifier. As a Verizon customer- I had some LTE service. As other mentioned- it can be a long walk to the parking lot from your site (also where a solar charging station for USB cords and the vault toilets are located. - Alice Madsen

One reviewer likened the experience to "hiking through Florida- but a thousand times bigger and better," suggesting a similar subtropical floodplain ecosystem characterized by towering old-growth forests, diverse plant life, and abundant wildlife. Expect a humid environment, especially during warmer months, as highlighted by the reviewer's experience of "sweating buckets just putting up the tent." The proximity to the park offers opportunities for exploring its unique biodiversity, including various species of birds, reptiles, and mammals. The evenings are described as "splendid," implying a peaceful and potentially beautiful natural soundscape. However, the reviewer also noted the presence of "many children," suggesting that the campground can be popular with families, which might impact the overall tranquility at times. For nature enthusiasts seeking an immersive experience in a distinctive ecosystem, Longleaf Campground's location is a significant environmental feature.

Services at Longleaf Campground appear to be somewhat basic, catering to a more self-sufficient camping style. A significant mention in one review is the availability of a "flushing toilet," with one being left open overnight, which is considered a valuable amenity, especially for those accustomed to more primitive camping. The presence of "vault toilets" is also noted, located near the parking lot. Another mentioned service is a "solar charging station for USB cords," indicating a limited but useful amenity for charging electronic devices. Potable water access and waste disposal facilities are typically expected at campgrounds, though not explicitly mentioned in these reviews. It's important for potential visitors to confirm the availability of these essential services directly with the campground. The proximity to the park's boardwalk is highlighted as a worthwhile short drive, offering an accessible way to explore the unique swamp environment. The campground is described as "peaceful" by one reviewer, particularly at campsite 10. However, another reviewer noted that mornings could be lively with the sounds of children. The campground is also mentioned as "dog friendly," which is a significant feature for campers traveling with pets. The varying distances of campsites from the parking lot are also a feature to consider; while campsite 10 was only about 150 yards away, another review mentioned a "long walk to the parking lot from your site," where some amenities like the solar charging station and vault toilets are located. This suggests that the level of accessibility to amenities might vary depending on the chosen campsite. The experience of encountering ticks is also a notable, albeit less desirable, feature of camping in this natural environment, requiring campers to be prepared with appropriate precautions and knowledge of tick removal.

The dog-friendly policy is another significant feature for pet owners. The availability of a flushing toilet overnight is a notable convenience for a more rustic campground. The presence of a solar charging station, though limited to USB cords and located at the parking lot, is a useful amenity for staying connected. However, potential campers should be aware of the potential for a longer walk from some campsites to the parking area and the presence of ticks in the natural environment.

Its proximity to Congaree National Park makes it an ideal base for exploring the park's trails and biodiversity. The peaceful atmosphere reported by one reviewer, along with the dog-friendly policy, enhances its appeal.
