Medeiros Campground - Primitive Introduce
Welcome to Medeiros Campground - Primitive, a basic camping destination located in Gustine, CA 95322, USA. For individuals and groups searching for "Camping Near Me" with a focus on affordability and access to fishing, Medeiros Campground offers a no-frills, rustic outdoor experience. As its name suggests, "Primitive" indicates a focus on essential facilities, requiring campers to be largely self-sufficient.
The **environment** at Medeiros Campground is characterized by a relatively open landscape, typical of the San Joaquin Valley. One review notes "Minimum shade during the day and dark at night," suggesting that the area is open, potentially with limited tree cover, which means campers should be prepared for direct sun exposure during daylight hours. The "dark at night" aspect is often a positive for campers seeking clear views of the stars, away from significant light pollution. The campground's location makes it a "Great fishing spot," indicating its proximity to a body of water suitable for angling. While not explicitly stated, such a location might imply a lakeside or riverside setting, offering recreational opportunities tied to the water.
The reviews present a mixed perspective on the environment's cleanliness and overall upkeep. While the natural setting offers potential for outdoor enjoyment, one review highlights significant issues, stating the "place was covered in trash," and "infested with flies, probably because of trash." This same review also mentions "Our table and camp site covered in fish guts" and "Every flat surface covered in gang graffiti." These observations suggest challenges with maintaining cleanliness and order within the campground, which can detract significantly from the user experience. The presence of "discarded beer bottles and bottle caps" further points to issues with site tidiness and responsible use by some visitors. Conversely, the fact that there are "armed law enforcement rangers patrolling the park" suggests that efforts are being made to address these issues and maintain safety, which is a crucial aspect of any recreational area.
In terms of **services**, Medeiros Campground provides fundamental amenities for a primitive camping experience:
- **Fire Pits:** Reviews confirm that "Fire pits are useful," which is a standard and highly valued amenity for camping, allowing for campfires (where permitted) and outdoor cooking.
- **Picnic Areas:** The presence of "Picnic areas as well" indicates dedicated spots with picnic tables, providing a convenient surface for meal preparation and dining.
- **Affordable:** A key service is its affordability, making it an accessible option for budget-conscious campers.
While specific details on water sources or restroom facilities are not explicitly detailed in the provided reviews, primitive campgrounds typically offer very basic options, such as vault toilets or require campers to be self-sufficient for water (meaning bringing their own or treating any available non-potable sources). The review mentioning "Store and Freeway down the street" indicates that despite its primitive nature, the campground offers relatively convenient access to external services, which can be beneficial for resupply or emergencies.
The human element of service is also noted, with an "Employee at entrance was friendly and helpful." This positive interaction at entry can set a good tone for a visit, even if other aspects of the campground are challenging. The presence of "armed law enforcement rangers patrolling the park" is a significant service aimed at ensuring visitor safety and enforcing rules, which is particularly relevant given some of the negative observations regarding cleanliness and behavior.
The main **features** of Medeiros Campground that would appeal to its target audience include:
- **Great Fishing Spot:** This is a primary draw for anglers looking for accessible fishing opportunities.
- **Affordable Camping:** Its low cost makes it an attractive option for budget-minded campers.
- **Basic Facilities:** The presence of fire pits and picnic areas provides essential comforts for a rustic camping experience.
- **Proximity to Amenities:** The "Store and Freeway down the street" offers a convenience factor not always found at primitive campgrounds, allowing for easy access to supplies and transportation.
- **Patrolling Law Enforcement:** The presence of rangers can provide a sense of security and help deter unwanted behavior.
As a primitive campground, it implies limited or no hookups for RVs, meaning campers should be prepared for dry camping or boondocking conditions if bringing an RV. The emphasis is on a more rugged, self-reliant experience.
For **promotional information**, Medeiros Campground can highlight its primary strengths: its affordability and its reputation as a "Great fishing spot." It appeals to campers who are comfortable with basic amenities and are seeking a cost-effective way to enjoy the outdoors, particularly those interested in fishing. It should be positioned as a place where campers can get "back to basics" while still having convenient access to external supplies if needed. However, transparency regarding potential issues with cleanliness and the need for personal responsibility in maintaining the campsite would be beneficial for managing visitor expectations. Promoting the presence of patrolling rangers can also reassure potential visitors about safety. While the reviews indicate some significant challenges with cleanliness and adherence to park rules by some users, the fundamental offerings of affordable camping and good fishing remain for those prepared to overlook or actively work to improve their immediate surroundings.

Medeiros Campground - Primitive Reviews
Great place to visit or camp. Great fishing spot. Affordable. Store and Freeway down the street. Minimum shade during the day and dark at night. Fire pits are useful. Picnic areas as well.
Apr 22, 2025 · Laurence FernandezEmployee at entrance was friendly and helpful. And I was glad to see armed law enforcement rangers patrolling the park. Those are the only reasons I gave it 2 stars. I'm ok with primitive camping but place was covered in trash. Filled up a bag of trash from just our site and didn't get all of it. Infested with flies, probably because of trash. From the voluminous amount of discarded beer bottles and bottle caps, I'm guessing the number one activity here is getting drunk. Our table and camp site covered in fish guts. Every flat surface covered in gang graffiti. Obviously they need more police here.
Apr 21, 2025 · chris mCamping right on the water. Big rig friendly. Boondocking at its very best. Perfect for passing through. Hot, but nice breeze. Very clean. The reservoir is full of clear clean water.
Jun 07, 2024 · David ManpearlNice camping along the lake. Camping costs $20 at the ranger station ($10 per additional car). Close to town (just 6 mins drive to the gas station).Pros: Full cell service. Trash cans and restroom are available. Beautiful views. Easy lake access. Not crowded on a weeknight (but far from empty). Big spots for tents. Fire pits — bring firewood. Covered picnic tables.Cons: After heavy rain, parts of the road / trail were flooded. Many trash cans were knocked over and trash was everywhere around the campground. Some road noise. Campsites are fairly spaced out, but there aren’t many trees for privacy.Overall a pretty spot with lots of campsites, but the trash everywhere was disappointing.
Mar 29, 2023 · SamThere's no potable water here despite what Google says. Camping fee is $20. It would be nice if they addressed the large holes next to the posts for the picnic shelters. Otherwise a decent place to spend the night, and the fact that the ranger closes the gate at night gave me an extra feeling of safety. Which sort of compensated for the fear of breaking my ankle in a giant hole in the dark
