Memorial Campground Introduce
For those in the Winthrop, Washington area searching for "camping near me" and seeking a more self-sufficient and free outdoor experience, Memorial Campground, located on NF-51 near Winthrop, WA 98862, offers a rustic and picturesque option. Based on recent user reviews, this campground provides a quiet and secluded setting along a river, appealing to those who prefer a more traditional camping experience without developed amenities. However, it's crucial to understand the nature of this campground, particularly its lack of services, to ensure it aligns with your camping style and needs.
The environment of Memorial Campground is described as "quiet, secluded, picturesque," suggesting a natural setting that is both peaceful and visually appealing. The campground is situated alongside a narrow river with "good clean water" and "quick rapids." While fishing was not attempted by one reviewer, the presence of a river often indicates potential for angling. A short, one-minute trail leads to a "sandy beach" with water deep enough for swimming, adding to the recreational opportunities available in the natural environment. The drive to the campground from Winthrop is reported to be approximately 30 minutes maximum, with the country road and views described as "exceptionally pretty," enhancing the overall experience of reaching this secluded location. The condition of the NF-51 road was noted as "awesome," especially in comparison to gravel roads, making the access relatively smooth for those with suitable vehicles.
In terms of services, Memorial Campground is explicitly noted for its lack of amenities. One reviewer mentioned "no services" and another confirmed "no amenities, not even garbage." This is a crucial aspect for anyone considering this campground as part of their "camping near me" search. Campers should be fully prepared for a primitive camping experience, meaning they will need to bring their own water, have their own waste disposal system (pack it out), and be self-sufficient for all their needs. The absence of developed facilities like restrooms, showers, or maintained trash receptacles underscores the need for responsible and Leave No Trace camping practices at Memorial Campground. While one reviewer who prefers campgrounds without developed services found this appealing, those accustomed to or requiring amenities should consider alternative options.
A key feature of Memorial Campground is its free access. The fact that it is "FREE!" as highlighted by a reviewer, is a significant draw for budget-conscious campers who are comfortable with a no-frills experience. This free access, combined with its picturesque and secluded location, makes it an attractive option for those seeking a more independent camping adventure. The proximity to a river with swimming access and the scenic drive from Winthrop further enhance its appeal as a natural getaway.
Another feature to note is the accessibility of the campground. One reviewer with a 35-foot truck and camper was able to navigate the "very rutted dirt driveway" to reach the campground and turn around, suggesting that it is accessible to reasonably sized vehicles. However, they cautioned against anything larger than that, indicating potential limitations for very large RVs or trailers. The presence of another, larger-looking campground across the river is also mentioned, though no details about that campground are provided. This suggests that there might be alternative camping options in the immediate vicinity with potentially different levels of services and accessibility.
The overall tone of the positive reviews suggests that Memorial Campground is best suited for short overnight stays or for campers who prioritize a quiet, secluded, and natural environment over developed amenities. One reviewer stated it was a "great campsite in a pinch for an overnighter but I think there's better places for longer stays," implying that the lack of services might become more challenging for extended camping trips. However, for those seeking a brief escape into nature without the commercial aspects of more developed campgrounds, Memorial Campground offers a valuable option within the "camping near me" category.
Given that Memorial Campground is a free, no-amenities site, there is no information regarding promotional offers or fees beyond the implicit benefit of being free. Campers should be aware that being a free site often means it is maintained at a minimal level, and users bear the full responsibility for their safety and environmental impact. The strong emphasis on packing out all trash in the reviews underscores the importance of respecting this free resource and ensuring its continued availability and natural beauty for future visitors.
In conclusion, Memorial Campground near Winthrop, Washington, offers a unique opportunity for a free, rustic camping experience in a picturesque and secluded setting along a clean, rapid river with swimming access. Its lack of services means campers must be entirely self-sufficient and committed to Leave No Trace principles. While the access road is manageable for mid-sized RVs, larger vehicles might face challenges. It appears to be a great option for short stays or for those who prefer a more independent and amenity-free camping experience within the stunning natural beauty of the Winthrop area. For those searching for "camping near me" who prioritize nature, quiet, and freedom over facilities, Memorial Campground is a noteworthy option to consider, with the caveat of being fully prepared for a primitive camping scenario.

Memorial Campground Reviews
Jason M rated this 1 star due to no services. Campground is great, If you want services maybe a hotel is better suited. This is great to still be able to camp on your own merits without movie night or ice cream socials.
Jul 01, 2019 · Mike LooperFree! Camped here twice, one night each time. We were able to get down a very rutted dirt driveway to the campground and turn around with 35 feet worth of truck and camper. I wouldn't recommend anything larger then that. It's quiet, secluded, picturesque, and FREE! There's another much larger looking campground across from this one, directly across the river. I don't know anything about that one, except that it was partially visible from this one. The narrow river was very cold, but had good clean water with quick rapids. We didn't do any fishing. There was a short one minute trail you could walk to access a sandy beach, and water deep enough to swim. I'm going on memory here but I think the drive from Winthrop was approx 30 minutes max. I remember the country road and views to Winthrop were exceptionally pretty. The NF-51 was in awesome condition, not like our gravel roads in BC. At all!! Lol I would go back. Great campsite in a pinch for an overnighter but I think there's better places for longer stays. PS the times we stayed there were no amenities, not even garbage, so please people don't be jerks, pack it out. 😉
