Honeymoon Campground

Winthrop, WA 98862, USA

4.0
Camped June 26-30, 2022 Sunday through Friday. Lots of mosquitoes and flies but overall, very quiet and secluded campground in bear country. Besides squirrels, birds, and ants - just a deer and no bear encounters. The best site would be 5 and the worst are 2 and 3.Site 1: By vault toilet, best shadeSite 2: No shadeSite 3: No shadeSite 4: Water access, no shadeSite 5: Water access, great shadeHad the whole site pretty much to ourselves except day of arrival and day of leaving. Very well maintained roads and sites. The couple volunteers came every other day and were extremely friendly and warned us of possible bear encounters (though not a single bear showed up). There's a trailhead at the end of the NF road up north which you can drive up to. Also, this area had been engulfed with wildfire back in 2021 so it's still recovering from that. You will pass along a graveyard of trees (which made me sad).Pack in, pack out. No garbage disposal. Town of Winthrop is only a couple minutes away. There is no service at this site. Fee is $10 per day, first come-first served. On the rare occasion campground is full, many disperse sites are along the road. Have fun! - Kimmy Garcia (Kimmy)

Honeymoon Campground Introduce

Seeking a tranquil and secluded "camping near me" experience in a natural setting? Honeymoon Campground, located near Winthrop, WA 98862, USA, offers a quiet retreat for those looking to escape into nature. While the name might evoke romantic getaways, this campground, nestled in bear country, provides a more rustic and self-sufficient camping experience. Based on recent visitor reviews, Honeymoon Campground offers a sense of solitude and access to natural beauty, albeit with some considerations for potential campers.

The environment surrounding Honeymoon Campground is described as "very quiet and secluded," making it an appealing destination for those seeking peace and tranquility away from crowded campgrounds. The area is located in bear country, which adds an element of wildness and requires campers to be aware of and follow proper bear safety protocols. Despite being in bear country, one reviewer who stayed for five nights reported no bear encounters, observing only squirrels, birds, ants, and a deer. The campground is also situated in an area that was affected by wildfire in 2021, and visitors will pass through a "graveyard of trees" as the area recovers. This provides a stark reminder of nature's power and the ongoing process of ecological regeneration. The presence of a "lil River" (Dightmile Creek, mentioned by a future visitor) suggests water access at some campsites, enhancing the natural appeal.

In terms of services and features, Honeymoon Campground offers basic amenities for a more primitive camping experience. A vault toilet is available, with Site 1 being conveniently located nearby and offering the "best shade." However, a significant point to note is the "Pack in, pack out. No garbage disposal" policy. This means campers are responsible for removing all their trash upon departure, emphasizingLeave No Trace principles. There is also no water service directly at the campsites, as indicated by the site descriptions ("Water access" likely refers to proximity to the creek, not spigots). Therefore, campers need to bring their own water supply. Cell phone service is also absent at the campground ("no service at this site"), which can be a plus for those wanting a complete digital detox but a consideration for safety and communication.

The campground features several individual campsites with varying characteristics. Based on the site-specific descriptions:

  • Site 1: Offers the best shade and is located by the vault toilet.
  • Site 2: Provides no shade.
  • Site 3: Also offers no shade.
  • Site 4: Has water access but no shade.
  • Site 5: Features water access and great shade, making it potentially the most desirable site.

This detailed breakdown allows prospective campers to choose a site that best suits their needs and preferences regarding shade and water access. The fact that the roads and sites are "very well maintained" suggests that the campground is kept in good condition despite its rustic nature.

A notable feature mentioned is the presence of volunteer camp hosts. A couple of volunteers visited every other day during one reviewer's stay. They were described as "extremely friendly" and provided helpful information, including warnings about potential bear encounters. While they may not be onsite continuously, their presence and helpfulness contribute positively to the camping experience.

For those interested in hiking, there is a trailhead located at the end of the NF road north of the campground, accessible by car. This provides an opportunity to explore the surrounding area further. Additionally, the town of Winthrop is "only a couple minutes away," offering access to supplies, services, and potentially some local attractions.

The fee for camping at Honeymoon Campground is remarkably low at "$10 per day," and it operates on a "first come-first served" basis. This makes it an affordable option for budget-conscious campers. While reservations are not taken, the review mentions that on the "rare occasion campground is full, many disperse sites are along the road," providing alternative options in the vicinity.

One future visitor mentioned "Hunting near campground" and noted a "Nice spot on Dightmile creek," indicating that the area is also utilized for hunting during appropriate seasons and that the creek is a notable natural feature. This further highlights the campground's location within a broader natural environment.

Promotional information is not explicitly provided in the reviews. Given the low daily fee and the first-come-first-served policy, it is unlikely that specific discounts or promotions are regularly offered. The primary draw of Honeymoon Campground appears to be its quiet seclusion, natural setting, and affordability. Local users searching for "camping near me" who prioritize these aspects and are prepared for a more self-sufficient camping style will find this campground appealing.

In conclusion, Honeymoon Campground near Winthrop, WA, offers a secluded and budget-friendly camping experience in a natural environment. Its key features include quiet campsites (with varying levels of shade and water access), proximity to hiking trails and the town of Winthrop, and the presence of helpful volunteer camp hosts. However, campers must be prepared for a pack-in/pack-out policy, the absence of direct water service at sites, no cell phone service, and the need to be aware of potential wildlife, including bears. The low daily fee and first-come-first-served system make it an accessible option for those seeking a more rustic and independent camping adventure in a recovering post-wildfire landscape. For local users looking for "camping near me" that emphasizes tranquility and a connection with nature, Honeymoon Campground is worth considering, provided they are well-prepared for its more primitive nature.
