Moose Creek Point Introduce
For those in search of an exceptional "camping near me" experience that combines the allure of lakeside camping with a sense of tranquility and natural beauty, Moose Creek Point in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, stands out as a premier destination. Located at Yellowstone National Park, WY 82190, this campground on the shores of Lake Shoshone offers a unique environment characterized by sheltered coves, spacious campsites, and opportunities for both relaxation and adventure.
The environment of Moose Creek Point is particularly noteworthy for its calm waters. Situated within a cove, the shoreline of this campsite enjoys natural protection from the potentially windy conditions of the main lake. As one delighted visitor recounted, this results in "amazingly calm water in the mornings and evenings," creating a serene atmosphere perfect for enjoying the lake's beauty and engaging in water activities. This sheltered location makes Moose Creek Point an ideal choice for families with young children or anyone seeking a peaceful waterfront experience.
One of the standout features of Moose Creek Point, as highlighted by multiple reviewers, is the quality of the camping experience itself. One long-time visitor to Lake Shoshone noted that even though Moose Creek Point wasn't their usual favorite spot further into the lake, they "soon found that there isn't a bad site on the lake," emphasizing the overall high quality of the camping locations in this area. However, Moose Creek Point offers a particular advantage in terms of accessibility. For those paddling in, it's described as "not as far in as a lot of the campsites," which can be a significant benefit, especially if you encounter windy conditions during your journey.
The calm waters of the cove at Moose Creek Point open up fantastic opportunities for water-based activities. One reviewer fondly described "paddling out each evening with my 7 year old to watch the sunset on the perfectly flat water of our cove." This idyllic scene highlights the peaceful and family-friendly nature of this location. The water was even calm enough for playing, with the reviewer's family engaging in activities like practicing canoe swamping and righting, and even playfully walking under an upside-down canoe. While the water might be cold, it's described as "doable for a bit," adding a refreshing element to the camping experience.
In terms of campsite features, Moose Creek Point offers a variety of appealing aspects. Visitors have noted "great areas that are hidden in the trees," providing shade and a sense of privacy. The campground also boasts a "huge cooking/gathering area away from the tents (probably 50 yards away?)." This separation of cooking and sleeping areas is a thoughtful design that can enhance safety (especially in bear country, although specific bear safety measures are not detailed in the reviews and should be verified with park authorities) and provide a dedicated space for communal activities without disturbing those who wish to rest. Furthermore, there are "plenty of tent spaces," with one reviewer mentioning easily setting up an 8-man tent with ample room for several other smaller tents in different areas. This suggests that Moose Creek Point can accommodate both larger groups and multiple smaller parties comfortably.
Beyond the individual campsites, the surrounding environment of Moose Creek Point offers opportunities for exploration and enjoying scenic vistas. A trail following the shoreline past the tent sites provides "great views" of Lake Shoshone and the surrounding landscape. One camper even found a picturesque spot to set up a hammock "up on a cliff that overlooked the lake," describing it as an "incredibly picturesque place to nap." This highlights the potential for relaxation and soaking in the natural beauty from various vantage points around the campground.
While specific services and amenities at Moose Creek Point are not detailed in the provided reviews, it's typical for backcountry or boat-in campsites in national parks to offer more primitive facilities. You should likely expect vault toilets and the need to bring your own potable water, food storage containers (bear canisters are often required or recommended in Yellowstone), and all other camping essentials. The focus is on experiencing the natural environment with minimal impact. Be sure to consult the official Yellowstone National Park website or contact park authorities for detailed information on available amenities and regulations.
Promotional information for Moose Creek Point is not explicitly provided in the reviews. However, the consistent positive feedback regarding the calm waters, spacious campsites, scenic beauty, and opportunities for family-friendly activities and relaxation serves as its own powerful endorsement. The fact that even experienced Lake Shoshone campers find Moose Creek Point to be a worthwhile destination speaks volumes about its appeal. For local users seeking "camping near me" that offers a blend of accessibility (relatively shorter paddle in), tranquility (sheltered cove), and natural beauty, Moose Creek Point presents a compelling option within the unparalleled setting of Yellowstone National Park.
To plan your trip to Moose Creek Point, it is essential to make reservations through the National Park Service's established booking system. Backcountry campsites in Yellowstone are often in high demand, especially during peak season. Be sure to check the park's website for information on permits, fees, regulations (including those related to wildlife safety and food storage), and any specific guidelines for boat-in campsites on Lake Shoshone. By preparing adequately and respecting the natural environment, you can look forward to an unforgettable camping experience at the serene and beautiful Moose Creek Point.

Moose Creek Point Reviews
Stayed here on our 4th trip to Shoshone. I liked that it wasn't as far in as a lot of the campsites that we have stayed in before. We hit the wind on our way in so it was nice to be able to stop a little short. I was afraid I'd be disapointed not being in our favorite spot but soon found that there isn't a bad site on the lake. The shoreline of this site sits protected in a cove from the winds of the rest of the lake leaving you with amazingly calm water in the mornings and evenings. My favorite part of the trip was paddling out each evening with my 7 year old to watch the sunset on the perfectly flat water of our cove. Water was even calm enough that we played in the water. We practiced swamping/righting a canoe and the kids even flipped one over and walked under the upside down canoe like they do in the movies. Cold water but doable for a bit...The site has some great areas that are hidden in the trees. Huge cooking/gathering area away from the tents (probably 50 yards away?). Plenty of tent spaces. We set up an 8 man tent in a big spot and could have easily set up 3 or 4 other 4 man tents in other areas.Following the trail along the shore past the tent sites gives you great views. I set up my hammock up on a cliff that overlooked the lake and it couldn't have been a more picturesque place to nap.
