Myrtle Grove Campground Introduce
For local adventurers seeking 'camping near me' in Oregon, Myrtle Grove Campground presents an accessible and appealing option, particularly for those looking for a no-cost camping experience during the summer. Located near Powers, Oregon, this campground offers a unique natural setting and the refreshing allure of a swimming hole, making it a potentially ideal destination for warm-weather getaways. While offering the significant benefit of being a free campsite, it's important for visitors to be mindful of their surroundings, as highlighted in user reviews.
The environment of Myrtle Grove Campground is characterized by its namesake – a canopy of myrtle trees that provide ample shade for campers. This natural shading is a significant advantage, especially during the peak summer months when temperatures can rise. In addition to the myrtle trees, the presence of a couple of old-growth Douglas fir trees adds to the scenic grandeur of the campground, offering a glimpse into the region's majestic natural heritage. The combination of these tree species creates a pleasant and sheltered atmosphere for camping.
A standout feature of Myrtle Grove Campground, as mentioned by a satisfied camper, is its "really nice" swimming hole. This natural amenity undoubtedly becomes a focal point during the summer, offering a refreshing escape from the heat. The clear waters of the swimming hole provide an opportunity for relaxation, recreation, and enjoying the natural surroundings from a different perspective. For local users seeking a campground where they can cool off and enjoy water activities, Myrtle Grove Campground holds considerable appeal.
Adding to the natural attractions is the presence of a foot trail leading to the river. This access to the river expands the recreational possibilities beyond just swimming. Campers might enjoy fishing, exploring the riverbanks, or simply relaxing by the water's edge and taking in the sights and sounds of the flowing river. The availability of a trail suggests an opportunity for gentle hikes and further immersion in the natural landscape surrounding the campground.
In terms of services and maintenance, recent feedback indicates that the campground is open and maintained for the summer season as of April 2024. This suggests a commitment to ensuring the basic upkeep of the area during its active period. The presence of an open pit toilet is mentioned, which provides a necessary amenity for campers. Furthermore, it's noted that the campground is checked on and cleaned regularly, implying a degree of care and attention to the site's condition. The fact that these basic services are provided at a free campground adds to its value for budget-conscious travelers.
However, one crucial aspect highlighted in a user review is the need for vigilance regarding personal safety. The reviewer mentions experiencing "one or two creepy people" in the area due to the campsite being free. This serves as an important reminder for all visitors to exercise caution, be aware of their surroundings, and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and the security of their belongings. While the natural beauty and recreational opportunities are significant draws, this aspect of being a free and potentially less supervised area should not be overlooked.
Despite this cautionary note, the overall sentiment from at least one reviewer is positive, describing it as a "pretty nice campground" and a "beautiful area" that gets "very nice and warm during the summer," making the swimming area particularly enjoyable. This suggests that for those who are mindful and prepared, Myrtle Grove Campground can offer a rewarding camping experience.
For local users exploring the 'camping near me' category, Myrtle Grove Campground offers the following key features and considerations:
- Free Camping: A significant advantage for budget-conscious campers looking for a no-cost overnight stay during the summer.

- Shaded Campsites: Abundant shade provided by myrtle trees, offering comfort during warm weather.
- Scenic Environment: Presence of old-growth Douglas firs adds to the natural beauty of the area.
- River Access: A foot trail provides access to the river, expanding opportunities for exploration and relaxation.
- Seasonal Maintenance: The campground is reportedly open and maintained during the summer months, with a pit toilet available and regular checks and cleaning.
- Safety Awareness: As a free campsite, visitors should be extra vigilant and aware of their surroundings due to potential safety concerns mentioned in reviews.
It's important to note that the provided information does not include details about specific amenities such as picnic tables, fire rings, or water sources beyond the river and swimming hole. Campers should likely come prepared with their own essential camping gear and be self-sufficient. The lack of fees often correlates with fewer provided amenities, and Myrtle Grove Campground appears to align with this expectation.
Given the limited information available online regarding Myrtle Grove Campground, local users might find it beneficial to seek more recent reviews or information from local outdoor recreation forums or groups. This could provide more up-to-date insights into the current conditions, any changes in maintenance or safety recommendations, and the experiences of other recent visitors. However, based on the available information, Myrtle Grove Campground presents a free, naturally appealing option for those in the 'camping near me' category near Powers, Oregon, who are comfortable with potentially basic amenities and the need for heightened personal awareness.
In conclusion, Myrtle Grove Campground offers a unique combination of natural beauty, a desirable swimming hole, and the significant benefit of being a free campsite during the summer months. For local campers near Powers, Oregon, seeking an affordable and nature-centric getaway, it is a destination worth considering. However, the importance of being aware of one's surroundings, as highlighted by user experiences, should be a primary consideration for anyone planning a visit to this free camping area.
