New River Junction Introduce
Looking for "camping near me" in the Blacksburg, Virginia area? New River Junction, located at 2591 Big Falls Rd, offers camping and river tubing experiences along the New River. Based on recent customer feedback, experiences at this campground appear to vary, with some guests highlighting positive aspects like scenic views and friendly staff, while others point out potential drawbacks such as train noise and bathroom conditions. Let's take a closer look at what New River Junction might offer for local campers.
The Environment: Riverside Camping with Scenic Potential
Situated along the New River, New River Junction benefits from a potentially beautiful natural environment. One reviewer specifically mentioned having an "amazing view" from their campsite. The presence of the river suggests opportunities for water-based activities, with tubing being explicitly highlighted as "wonderful." For local users seeking "camping near me" with access to the river for recreation and scenic enjoyment, this could be a significant draw. However, it's important to note that the campground is also located right next to a train track, which significantly impacts the environment in terms of noise. While one reviewer found the trains at midnight and 6 am enjoyable, another described the train noise as "extremely loud," with trains passing as many as five times in one night, causing ground shaking, especially for those in tent sites close to the tracks. This proximity to the train line is a crucial environmental factor to consider for those sensitive to noise.
The first reviewer also noted low humidity and minimal mosquito issues during their four-day stay, which could be a positive aspect of the environment depending on the time of year. Blacksburg being nearby also offers opportunities for exploration beyond the campground itself.
Services and Amenities: Mixed Perceptions
Service quality at New River Junction seems to have received mixed reviews. One camper praised the staff, including someone named Jake, as "friendly and helpful," mentioning that they even checked in on them. This positive interaction suggests that some staff members are attentive and customer-oriented. However, another review described the office staff as "rude" and highlighted what they perceived as "absurd rules," such as no driving into the campground after 11 pm, even for those staying there. This discrepancy in experiences indicates that service quality might be inconsistent.
Regarding amenities, the second review mentioned the bathrooms, noting that the one toilet and one shower available for each gender were "so gross you don’t feel like you’re getting clean" and pointed out "legitimate mold" in the shower. This is a significant concern for potential campers who value clean and well-maintained facilities. The first reviewer, who was in an RV, did not use the bathrooms, so their experience might not reflect the condition of these facilities. The mention of needing to conserve water suggests that water availability might be a consideration for some campers.
The availability of tubing is a notable feature, suggesting that the campground provides or facilitates this recreational activity on the New River. For local users looking for "camping near me" with built-in activities, this could be appealing.
Features: River Tubing, Train Proximity, and Varying Experiences
A primary feature of New River Junction is its access to the New River, with tubing being a key activity. The potential for scenic views is also a feature highlighted by one positive review. However, the significant feature that draws considerable attention is the campground's close proximity to a train track. For some, the sound of the trains might be a minor inconvenience or even enjoyable in a nostalgic way, as mentioned by one reviewer who appreciated the clear warning on the website about the trains. However, for others, the frequent and loud train traffic, including whistle blowing, can be a major deterrent, negatively impacting the camping experience, especially for those in tents close to the tracks.
The varying experiences reported by reviewers suggest that the quality of a campsite (e.g., view, proximity to amenities and train tracks) might differ significantly across the campground. The fact that one visit was during a less crowded weekend, likely due to a rainy forecast, might have contributed to a more positive experience for that particular guest.
Promotional Information: A Riverside Option with Caveats
If you're a local resident seeking "camping near me" in Blacksburg, VA, New River Junction offers the allure of camping along the New River with the added fun of tubing. The potential for beautiful views and the friendly service reported by some are definite positives. However, it's crucial to be aware of the significant train noise due to the campground's proximity to the tracks, which some visitors found disruptive. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the cleanliness and adequacy of the bathroom facilities and the perceived rudeness of some office staff.
For those considering a visit, especially if you are sensitive to noise or prioritize clean amenities, it would be wise to weigh these factors. If you are interested in the river access and tubing and are less bothered by train sounds, or if you have an RV and don't rely on the campground bathrooms, New River Junction might still be a viable option for your local camping needs.

Consider your priorities and contact the campground directly for more information before making a decision.

New River Junction Reviews
Based on some previous reviews, I guess we just lucked out! Our campsite was great, the view was amazing, the tubing was wonderful AND all of the staff we encountered, including Jake, were friendly and helpful. They even stopped by before leaving for the night to see if we needed anything! We were in an RV and did not need to use the bathrooms. We just had to conserve water but not a problem for four days. The weather was great, low humidity… a little rain. I normally draw mosquitos to me. I got one bite the whole four days we were there. The website was clear about the trains and turns out we really enjoyed them…at midnight and at 6 am. It was not crowded this weekend, I think the rain in the forecast kept folks away. Blacksburg was fun to explore. Maybe just the perfect weekend for a great experience…I don’t know.
Jul 22, 2024 · Donna RinaldoOffice staff was rude. They have NO accommodation for people arriving late and absurd rules like no one is allowed to drive in after 11 pm, even if you are staying there (I assume this is for noise which is understandable but seems extreme). Bathrooms (one for men and one for women- meaning one toilet and one shower for each) are so gross you don’t feel like you’re getting clean when you shower. Legitimate mold along the top of the shower. Warning, this campground is located right next to a train track. You don’t have to wonder if it will come… just how many times! Came 5x in one night, tent sites are so close you feel like you are laying on the tracks, you can feel the ground shaking and because it is by an intersection they blow the whistle which is EXTREMELY loud. What could be a great experience camping on the New River is otherwise abysmal and regrettable.
Sep 24, 2024 · Stephanie PaluchowskiWent earlier today with my girlfriend and we had a blast. The staff were very friendly and it was an easy check in process. It wasn't busy at all. We were the only ones in the river for a while, so we loved that lol and the rapids at the end were very fun. Would definitely recommend if you're in the area.
Jul 27, 2023 · Juan ChavezStayed at this campground in our RV from June 30 to July 6 of this year. First the positive - The location is great with a great view of the river and surrounding mountains. It would be especially beautiful in the fall when the leaves are changing.Floating the river is peaceful and relaxing and as long as you are using your own flotation devices you can float along the entire property for free. You only have to pay if you want to go further down river and need the shuttle for a ride back. It was quiet at night except for the trains which will be covered later. RV sites are not huge, but they are large enough where you have a little room to yourself and most of them back up to the river. Bonus while we were there was a jet fighter screaming down the river between the mountains and passing right overhead!Negatives - Family owned since 1982 and that was apparently the last time anything was updated. The place is run down, poorly maintained and the bathrooms are dirty and not cleaned routinely. There is only one functioning bathroom for each sex on site and you cannot use it if someone is taking a shower. There were a couple of porta potties in the RV area, but they were overly full and smelled bad. The power grid is not adequate to handle the weekends when the campground RV sites are full. Our power was fine during the week but come Friday when everyone arrived our Hughes Watchdog was constantly tripping off due to widely fluctuating power. The owner basically said it was our fault, although he did offer to let us move to a 50 amp site, but since we were leaving Sunday we just decided to ride it out. The owner, Jake is rude and obnoxious and is very discourteous to his guests. He apparently inherited the place as he has no management skills to have earned it without family connections. His stated reason for being rude to me was that we had supposedly been rude to the shuttle driver, but he would never say what we said to her that was rude. We only recall having a nice conversation with her as she told us about growing up in the area and swimming in the same river swimming holes as her father and grandfather which we thought was very neat. The only negative thing we said at all was after she asked our opinion of the campground, and we said the bathrooms were dirty and not cleaned properly. I guess that stating the truth is considered rude by the owner. There are also train tracks across the river and also next to the campground and trains do pass by often, but we did not consider that to be a big deal.We would have rated this campground a 3, but due to the rude owner we lowered it to a 2. If you don't mind staying at a shabby little tubing campground with a rude owner, then this is the place for you!
Jun 26, 2024 · Ranea SGreat little RV park. Location is great. The sites are clean and well maintained. Very convenient location for floating the river. Bathrooms were ok. I could see how on a busy weekend they could get backed up since there are only one per sex and if someone were showering they would be no other access. Trains do go by but it was not an issue. Will make it a point to go back! Owner was very helpful and friendly. Great fishing!
