Situated at 246 Big Stony Creek Rd, Ripplemead, VA 24150, this campground provides a unique blend of accessibility to local amenities and a sense of peaceful remoteness. Based on the available reviews, Sawmill Sonny's appears to be a welcoming and well-cared-for campground with appealing natural surroundings and strategic proximity to notable landmarks and recreational areas.
A Blend of Convenient Location and Remote Ambiance:
One of the standout features of Sawmill Sonny's Campground, as highlighted by a reviewer, is its ability to feel remote despite being close to town. This offers the best of both worlds for campers: the tranquility and immersion in nature associated with a more secluded location, combined with the convenience of easy access to local services, shops, and potentially restaurants in Ripplemead. This balance is particularly attractive for those who appreciate a peaceful camping experience without being too far removed from essential amenities.
The review also mentions "a pretty nice view of the hills," indicating that the campground benefits from the scenic beauty of the surrounding Appalachian region. Ripplemead is located in Giles County, known for its stunning mountain landscapes and outdoor recreational opportunities. Waking up to picturesque hill views can significantly enhance the camping experience, providing a sense of tranquility and connection with nature.
Warm Hospitality and a Well-Maintained Environment:
The positive comments about the owners being "lovely people" and the campground feeling like they "put some love into the place" speak volumes about the atmosphere and care taken at Sawmill Sonny's. Friendly and attentive hosts can greatly enhance a camper's stay, creating a welcoming and comfortable environment. The sentiment that the owners invest care into the campground suggests that visitors can expect a well-maintained and thoughtfully organized space.
Strategic Location for Outdoor Enthusiasts and Appalachian Trail Supporters:
Sawmill Sonny's Campground boasts a particularly advantageous location for those interested in supporting Appalachian Trail (AT) hikers. The review explicitly states that it's a "Great place to stop and support someone on the AT." This implies that the campground is either directly on or very near a section of the Appalachian Trail, making it an ideal stopover for hikers needing rest, resupply, or a place to connect with supporters. For local users who enjoy trail maintenance, providing support to hikers, or even section hiking themselves, Sawmill Sonny's could serve as a convenient base.
Furthermore, the campground's proximity to "Cherokee Flats and Glen Alton" adds to its appeal for nature and history enthusiasts. Cherokee Flats is likely a natural area of interest, perhaps offering scenic views or recreational opportunities. Glen Alton is a historic plantation in Giles County, featuring a preserved manor house and beautiful grounds. Its proximity to Sawmill Sonny's provides campers with the opportunity to explore local history and architecture during their stay.
For those interested in water-based activities, the campground is also "Less than 2 miles from Boat Ramp at Riverbend Park." Riverbend Park is a popular recreational area likely offering access to a river or lake for boating, fishing, and other water sports. This close proximity makes Sawmill Sonny's an attractive option for campers who wish to combine their camping experience with aquatic adventures.

Based on the information provided and general expectations for a campground, Sawmill Sonny's might offer the following services and features, although specific details would need to be confirmed by contacting the campground directly:

Sawmill Sonny's Campground Reviews
Close to town, but feels remote. Lovely people that own it. Really feels like they put some love into the place. Also has a pretty nice view of the hills.

Apr 10, 2023 · Jacob JI camped here on May 3rd-4th. Since I arrived later in the evening of May 3rd, I didn't meet the owner till next day. He's a phenomenal host. Assisted and provided me with bathroom key when keypad was not working. Very accommodating. If you're looking for a campsite with electricity, clean bathroom (including hot showers), with good cellular reception (T-Mobile) and beautiful sunset then look no further. This will be my new campsite since I visit the area twice a month. Thank you sir.
