Ochoco Divide Campground Introduce
For local adventurers seeking a serene and picturesque "camping near me" experience within the beauty of Central Oregon, Ochoco Divide Campground presents an excellent choice. Located along the Ochoco Highway near Prineville, OR 97754, and reachable by phone at (541) 416-6500 or +1 541-416-6500, this campground offers a tranquil escape within the stunning Ochoco National Forest. With clean facilities, a helpful on-site host, and breathtaking scenery, Ochoco Divide Campground is a highly recommended destination for both tent and RV campers looking for a peaceful retreat.
Ochoco Divide Campground has garnered positive reviews from visitors who have appreciated its cleanliness, quiet atmosphere, and the helpful presence of a camp host. One reviewer who spent Memorial Day Weekend at the campground noted the "super nice and clean" bathrooms, a significant factor in overall camping comfort. The presence of a host on-site was also highlighted as a positive for safety and assistance. Despite some ambient noise from cars and birds, the campground is generally described as "silent," particularly at night, allowing for exceptional stargazing, a feature highly praised by visitors.
Another reviewer echoed the sentiment of a "very nice campground" and specifically commended the camp host, Les, for being "great," "very friendly," and diligent in keeping the bathrooms "very clean." This consistent positive feedback regarding the facilities and the host underscores the well-maintained and welcoming nature of Ochoco Divide Campground.
Environment and Location:
The environment surrounding Ochoco Divide Campground is characterized by the natural beauty of the Ochoco National Forest. The scenery is described as "stunning," with a diverse mix of tree species including ponderosa pines, white pines, firs, and deciduous trees. This variety likely provides ample shade and a visually appealing forest setting for campers to enjoy.
The campground is situated at a relatively high altitude, "a hair over 4700 ft." This elevation can contribute to cooler temperatures, especially at night, and visitors sensitive to altitude might need a day to adapt. The high-altitude location also likely contributes to the clear night skies that make for "awesome" stargazing.
It's worth noting that the Ochoco Forest experienced a fire four years prior to one of the reviews, and the campground was affected. Visitors can still see some of the burned trees within the campground. While this is a reminder of the area's natural history, it does not detract from the overall positive experience reported by campers. In fact, it might offer a unique perspective on forest regeneration.
Being located in the high desert region, the area is prone to high temperatures and dry air, particularly during the summer months. However, the presence of "a lot of shade in the campground" is a significant benefit, providing relief from the sun and heat during the day.
The spacing of campsites is also appreciated, with reviewers noting that sites are "small and large and well spaced out so your neighbors aren't too close." This thoughtful layout enhances privacy and contributes to the overall peaceful atmosphere of the campground.
Services and Amenities:
Ochoco Divide Campground offers essential services and amenities for a comfortable camping experience, although it is important to note some limitations:
- Clean Bathrooms: Consistently praised as "super nice and clean," the restroom facilities are a significant asset of this campground. While the type of bathrooms (e.g., flush toilets or vault toilets) is not specified, the emphasis on cleanliness is noteworthy.
- On-Site Camp Host: The presence of a friendly and helpful camp host, Les, enhances safety and provides a point of contact for assistance or information.
- Spacious and Well-Spaced Sites: The campground offers a mix of small and large campsites that are well-spaced, providing a degree of privacy between neighbors. However, it's advisable to avoid bringing very large tents, especially during busy weekends, as some sites might be smaller.
- RV Accommodation: RV camping is permitted, with at least one reviewer noting that their parents' 32-foot RV fit fine. However, it's important to note that there are no water or electricity hookups available.
- Affordable Pricing: The nightly price was reported as $20, with the added benefit of pass discounts offering 50% off, making it a very budget-friendly option for "camping near me."
It is explicitly mentioned that the campground has "no water, no electricity." Therefore, campers must come prepared with their own water supply and any necessary power sources (e.g., generators or battery packs). This is typical for many forest campgrounds that prioritize a more natural and less developed camping experience.
While specific details about other amenities like fire rings or picnic tables are not mentioned in the reviews, it can be generally assumed that these basic provisions are available at each campsite, as they are standard in most established campgrounds.

Ochoco Divide Campground boasts several key features that make it an attractive option for "camping near me":

- Exceptional Stargazing: The high altitude and minimal light pollution contribute to "awesome" views of the night sky.

Ochoco Divide Campground Reviews
Spent Memorial Day Weekend at site 23. Some sites were a little small so I would avoid bringing any big tents especially on the weekends. The bathrooms were super nice and clean. There is also a host on site which I loved for safety. Minus the cars and birds this place is silent, and the stars at night are awesome would highly recommend. Price was $20 a night and pass discounts for 50% off were available.
Jun 04, 2023 · Megan DuncanVery nice campground! The camp host Les was great! Very friendly and keeps the bathrooms very clean. It's a small campground, no water, no electricity. You can take your RV there as well. My parents 32 foot fit fine. The sites are small and large and well spaced out so your neighbors aren't too close. The scenery is stunning. The Ochoco forest is beautiful. A mix of ponderosa pines, white pines, firs and deciduous trees. The campground is pretty high up, a hair over 4700 ft. If you're sensitive to altitude, you might take a day to adapt. There was a fire that ran through the forest 4 years ago and hit the campground. You can still see some of the burned trees in the campground. It's in the high desert, so be ready for high temperature and dry air. There is a lot of shade in the campground though. Definitely check it out.
Jul 06, 2020 · Nick BrunsThis should be a nice quiet campground but the host walks around blowing his gas-powered leaf blower. There are no leaves here, it's a pine forest.
Oct 08, 2024 · David S.Ochoco pass campground. Well taken care of site with welcoming host who kept the bathrooms immaculate. We were driving through during unprecedented heat so this campground was perfect as it was right near the pass. As you descend from this pass going east , you enter a large burned area as you drop in elevation. There wasn’t a lot more elevation gain as you head east so we were glad to stop here. Also we were able to go to the John day fossil beds National monument which was fascinating.
Jul 02, 2021 · Laura MaroonNice spot to pull off and spend the night. It is a dry camp with pit toilets. The spots are long enough for our RV and tow vehicle. Scenery is very nice. Would definitely stay again.
