Walton Lake

NF-2220, Prineville, OR 97754, USA

4.0
Very nice Campground, clean, quiet, stayed 3 nights. RV parking spots are paved, no electric, sewer, or dump station. There is vault toilets. Dogs must be leashed & picked up after. Camp sites have a picnic table & fire pits, with grills. Many sites have lake views, access is fairly easy. There is a trail around the lake, about 1 mile, it's fairly easy to walk. Some people rode bikes. The lake is very popular for fishing, I don't fish, just enjoyed walking the trail, the lake is beautiful. There is a day use area, as well as a small beach for kids to swim, but no playground. Reservations are advised for campsites, some sites are first come first serve. Camp hosts are great! Enjoyed the stay, will definitely camp there again 🙂👍 - Terry Abney

The RV parking spots are paved, offering a stable and level surface for vehicles, though it's important to note that there are no electric, sewer, or dump station hookups available directly at the sites. For tent campers, there is ample space within the campsites to set up. Each campsite comes equipped with a picnic table and a fire pit, complete with grills, perfect for cooking meals outdoors. Vault toilets are available throughout the campground, providing basic restroom facilities. Potable drinking water is also available within the campground, a valuable amenity for campers.

One of the standout features of Walton Lake is its namesake lake, which serves as a central hub for activities. The lake is very popular for fishing, and a common sentiment among visitors is the excellent fishing opportunities it provides. While specific regulations should always be verified with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, the lake is known to be stocked with rainbow trout multiple times throughout the summer, making it a productive spot for anglers using flies, bait, or lures. People often fish from the bank or by trolling. The lake is also a fantastic spot for paddleboarding and kayaking, offering calm waters ideal for non-motorized watercraft (gas motors are not permitted on the lake). In late summer, the water temperature is often described as pleasant for swimming, and there's a small, family-friendly beach area, though no playground is present.

Beyond the water, Walton Lake offers excellent opportunities for land-based activities. A well-maintained trail, approximately one mile in length, circles the perimeter of the lake. This trail is described as fairly easy to walk, making it accessible for most ages and fitness levels. It's popular not only for walking but also for biking, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenery from different perspectives. This easy access to a scenic trail further enhances the appeal of Walton Lake as a comprehensive outdoor recreation site. The campground is also a good base for other nearby activities such as bird watching, mountain biking, photography, and sightseeing within the Ochoco National Forest.

For promotional information, Walton Lake Campground is highly recommended by previous visitors. Reviews consistently praise the cleanliness and quiet environment. The presence of friendly and helpful camp hosts is frequently highlighted, contributing significantly to a positive camping experience. The ease of access to many sites and the beautiful lake views are also strong selling points. For prospective campers, it's advised to make reservations for campsites, as this is a popular spot, especially during peak season. Some sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, but reserving in advance, which can typically be done up to six months ahead of time via Recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777, is recommended to secure your preferred spot. There are also two fully accessible campsites available, demonstrating the campground's commitment to inclusivity.

Walton Lake is not just for overnight stays; it also features a dedicated day-use area. This allows visitors to enjoy the lake and its amenities for a shorter visit, perhaps for a picnic, fishing, or a walk around the trail. A day-use fee is typically charged per vehicle or group for this access. This flexibility makes Walton Lake an attractive option for both extended camping trips and shorter, enjoyable outings.

Important considerations for visitors include the campground's pet policy: dogs are permitted but must be kept on a leash and owners are responsible for picking up after them. While the lake is great for swimming in late summer, some visitors have noted a fair amount of algae, which is a natural occurrence in many lakes. It's also worth noting that while the campground is ideal for RVs, hookups are not available. The overall impression from visitor feedback is overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing a strong desire to return. "Enjoyed the stay, will definitely camp there again," is a common sentiment that speaks volumes about the quality of the experience at Walton Lake Campground.

In conclusion, Walton Lake Campground provides an excellent answer to "camping near me" for those in the Prineville, Oregon region. Its combination of a clean, quiet environment, stunning lake views, accessible activities like fishing, swimming, and hiking, and essential amenities creates a memorable outdoor retreat. Whether you're planning a multi-night camping trip with family or a peaceful day visit, Walton Lake offers a welcoming and beautiful setting in the heart of the Ochoco National Forest.
