"I picked up breakfast at Tahoe House Bakery before I made my way north up towards the PCT connection near Sierra City. Inspired and intrigued by thru-hikers that chose to make the 3,000+ mile trip, getting a chance to camp near the trail gave me an access to the life that eludes me.Site #11 was smaller than the rest, but with fields surrounding it my imagination ran with the idea of those looking for magic along this same path. It was a windy valley, so instead of the starry skies I love, I put on the fly and staked down an Ozark Trail 5-person mini-mansion. No wi-fi at this site, but the views at sites 12 and 13 make me want to return to unplug and explore. In the morning I hiked nearby Tamarack Lake trail and found the PCT connection, one of the 8 trails I love. #108isMagic." - Brittney Hikes

Packsaddle Campground Introduce

For those drawn to the allure of high mountain wilderness and direct access to renowned hiking trails, **Packsaddle Campground** stands as a compelling choice. Located on **Packer Lake Rd, Sierra City, CA 96125, USA**, this rustic campground in the Tahoe National Forest is an excellent option for individuals and groups searching for "Camping Near Me" who prioritize an authentic outdoor experience, especially those with an interest in the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) or equestrian activities.

The **environment** of Packsaddle Campground is characterized by its stunning natural setting. It is nestled within a "windy valley" surrounded by "fields," offering expansive views and a sense of openness not always found in heavily forested campgrounds. The surrounding landscape features towering pine and fir trees, providing some shade, while the open areas invite panoramic vistas of the Sierra Nevada. The campground's location near the PCT connection adds a unique element, attracting those inspired by the long-distance trail and the pristine wilderness it traverses. While wind can be a factor, as noted by a reviewer who put on their tent fly, the overall ambiance is one of tranquility and immersion in nature, a perfect place to "unplug and explore." The nearby Tamarack Lake trail offers beautiful hiking opportunities, further enhancing the natural appeal.

Packsaddle Campground is part of the extensive Gold Lakes Basin recreational area, which means campers are surrounded by a network of alpine lakes, streams, and rugged mountain terrain. This provides a diverse natural backdrop for various outdoor pursuits.

In terms of **services and features**, Packsaddle Campground is a National Forest Service (NFS) campground that offers basic amenities designed for a comfortable, self-sufficient camping experience. It typically features around 15 individual campsites. Each site is equipped with a **picnic table and a fire ring with a grill**, allowing campers to prepare meals and enjoy campfires under the stars. Crucially, each site also includes a **bear box (food storage locker)**. While one reviewer mentioned their bear box was "a little rundown" and required finding a "broken off" handle, the provision of these lockers is vital given the area's wildlife, and campers are always advised to be bear aware and secure food properly.

The campground provides **vault toilets**, which are regularly maintained, though visitors should manage expectations as with any rustic pit toilet. **Potable drinking water** is generally available via communal spigots, a significant convenience in a remote setting. There are no hookups for RVs at Packsaddle Campground, making it more suitable for dry camping (boondocking) for self-contained RVs, or for tent camping. Campers should be prepared for potential "meat bees" but may find fewer mosquitoes, as observed by a reviewer during their visit.

A distinctive feature of Packsaddle Campground is its appeal to **equestrian campers**. The presence of "horse stalls" at site 15 (and likely elsewhere) indicates that the campground is designed to accommodate campers with horses, offering a dedicated space for their animals. This makes it a popular staging point for horseback riding adventures into the backcountry, particularly along designated equestrian trails and the PCT.

The layout of the sites varies. While some sites like #11 might be "smaller than the rest," they often come with their own unique advantages, such as being surrounded by "fields" that offer expansive views. Reviewers also noted that sites like #12 and #13 offer particularly desirable views, suggesting that site selection can enhance the experience. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning campers should arrive early, especially during peak seasons, to secure a spot.

For outdoor enthusiasts searching for "Camping Near Me," Packsaddle Campground is a prime access point to extensive recreational opportunities. Its direct connection to the **Pacific Crest Trail (PCT)** is a major draw, appealing to both serious thru-hikers and day hikers looking to experience a section of this iconic route. The "Tamarack Lake trail" offers another fantastic hiking option, providing scenic views and access to the pristine alpine lake. Beyond hiking, the surrounding Gold Lakes Basin area offers opportunities for **fishing** in numerous lakes and streams, **mountain biking** on designated trails, and **wildlife viewing** (including deer, various birds, and potentially bear). The chance to observe or connect with PCT thru-hikers adds a unique cultural element to the camping experience.

**Promotional information** for Packsaddle Campground emphasizes its peaceful, rustic character and its unparalleled access to wilderness. It's pitched as an ideal spot for those seeking solitude, scenic beauty, and direct immersion in the Sierra Nevada landscape. The connection to the PCT is a significant highlight, appealing to a niche but dedicated group of outdoor enthusiasts. The campground's suitability for equestrian campers also sets it apart from many other sites. The phone numbers **(530) 862-1368** and **+1 530-862-1368** can be used for general inquiries with the Yuba River Ranger District of the Tahoe National Forest, which manages the campground. As a first-come, first-served site, planning involves arriving early, especially during the summer months and on weekends. Packsaddle Campground truly offers a unique and memorable camping adventure for those looking to explore the rugged beauty and vast trails of the northern Sierra Nevada mountains.
