Sardine Campground

Gold Lake Hwy, Calpine, CA 96124, USA

4.0
Of course I will give this 5 stars, I'm the host! But it really is a nice place to spend down time and enjoy the Buttes, lakes and mother nature. I strived to keep the restrooms clean but need to know the secret to combating flies and smell, but I did my best. The cg is constantly full so you know a lot of people like it and come back annually for reunions, birthdays, school groups and just to get outdoors! You won't be disappointed. - Donnis Sullivan

Sardine Campground Introduce

For those seeking an unforgettable outdoor adventure amidst the majestic beauty of the Sierra Nevada, **Sardine Campground** offers an exceptional camping experience. Located at **Gold Lake Hwy, Calpine, CA 96124, USA**, this highly sought-after National Forest System (NFS) campground is a prime destination for anyone searching for "Camping Near Me" in the Northern California region, particularly those drawn to the dramatic landscapes of the Sierra Buttes and the recreational opportunities of the Gold Lakes Basin.

The **environment** of Sardine Campground is truly spectacular. It is nestled in a heavily forested area, providing abundant shade from mature trees, including pines, cedars, and firs. This natural canopy not only offers relief from the sun but also contributes to the tranquil atmosphere. The campground's strategic location provides "great views and access to Sierra Buttes," a prominent and iconic mountain range known for its rugged peaks and stunning geological formations. This dramatic backdrop creates a visually inspiring setting for camping.

Sardine Campground is part of the larger **Gold Lakes Basin Recreation Area**, a region dotted with numerous pristine alpine lakes. This proximity means "nearby lakes to paddles, swim, splash," offering a wealth of water-based activities. Lower Sardine Lake is just a short walk or drive away from the campground, providing opportunities for non-motorized boating, fishing, and swimming in its clear, cold waters. Upper Sardine Lake is also accessible via a short but steep trail, rewarding hikers with even more solitude and breathtaking views. The crystal-clear waters and surrounding granite peaks make for an incredibly picturesque setting.

As a **typical NFS campground**, Sardine Campground provides essential amenities that blend rustic charm with necessary conveniences. It is a highly popular destination, so much so that it is "constantly full," indicating that "a lot of people like it and come back annually for reunions, birthdays, school groups and just to get outdoors!" This popularity is a strong testament to its appeal and the quality of the camping experience it offers. While it operates on a first-come, first-served basis for some sites, many are reservable through the Recreation.gov system, making it advisable to book well in advance, especially for peak season visits.

In terms of **services and features**, each campsite at Sardine Campground is equipped with a **picnic table and a fire ring with a grill**, allowing campers to prepare meals and enjoy campfires. Bear-resistant food storage lockers are a critical feature and are generally present at each site, reflecting the fact that this is **bear country**. Campers are advised to "be bear aware and secure food and trash appropriately" as "Not everyone did..." which highlights the importance of responsible food storage to protect both visitors and wildlife.

The campground provides **pit toilets** for restroom facilities. While one reviewer, who identified themselves as a host, mentioned striving "to keep the restrooms clean" and acknowledged the challenge of "combating flies and smell," this indicates a consistent effort from the staff to maintain hygiene, which is common for pit toilets in remote settings. **Potable water** is also available at various spigots throughout the campground, a crucial amenity for extended stays. The sites themselves are generally "relatively litter free," with campers seeming "to pick up after themselves pretty well," which speaks to the respectful community that frequents this campground.

For those seeking outdoor recreation beyond the lakes, Sardine Campground is a hub for **hiking and walking options**. The campground offers direct access to a variety of trails, including those that lead to the majestic Sierra Buttes. The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) passes through the broader region, and segments can be accessed for day hikes or longer backpacking trips. The "plenty of trees for shade and setting up a hammock" also adds to the comfort and enjoyment of the campsites.

A significant feature for many campers is that Sardine Campground is **dog friendly**. This allows visitors to bring their canine companions along to enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings, though dogs must always be leashed and owners are expected to clean up after them, adhering to responsible pet ownership guidelines in a shared natural space.

The geographic location, accessed via the scenic Gold Lake Highway, provides a sense of remoteness while still being relatively accessible. The phone numbers **(530) 862-1158** and **+1 530-862-1158** connect to the local Forest Service office that manages the campground, providing a resource for specific questions or current conditions.

**Promotional information** for Sardine Campground centers on its stunning natural beauty, particularly its proximity to the Sierra Buttes and the Gold Lakes Basin. It is marketed as an ideal destination for those who love water activities such as fishing, swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding, as well as terrestrial pursuits like hiking, nature observation, and photography. The consistent high demand and return visitors speak volumes about its appeal as a peaceful and picturesque escape from urban life. The emphasis is on a classic, well-maintained national forest camping experience, offering opportunities for both active adventure and serene relaxation in one of California's most beautiful mountain regions.
