One of the most appealing aspects of Pine Ridge Recreation Area is its natural setting. Situated in a "picturesque pine forest," the campground offers a beautiful and shaded environment for camping. The presence of mature pine trees not only creates a visually appealing landscape but also provides a pleasant aroma and a sense of being truly immersed in nature. This type of environment is often highly sought after by those looking to escape the more developed and open campgrounds.
Despite its rustic nature, Pine Ridge Recreation Area provides essential amenities that contribute to a comfortable camping experience. Reviewers have noted the presence of a "clean restroom" and "multiple water spouts," indicating that basic hygiene and hydration needs are well catered for. The cleanliness of the restroom is particularly important and suggests that the area is maintained with care. The availability of multiple water spouts adds convenience for campers at different locations within the campground.
Security and peace of mind are enhanced by the campground's gated access. The gate is "closed to cars from 10PM-6AM," which effectively minimizes vehicular traffic within the camping area during nighttime hours. This contributes to a quieter and safer environment for campers, allowing for a more restful sleep without the disturbance of passing vehicles. However, the front of the park remains open for late arrivals, providing a practical solution for those who may arrive outside the gated hours.
For those who enjoy hiking and exploring the natural surroundings, Pine Ridge Recreation Area boasts a significant feature: a "trail head onsite for a nice hike." This immediate access to a hiking trail allows campers to easily embark on nature walks and further immerse themselves in the beauty of the area without having to drive to a separate location. The availability of a trail directly from the campground adds to its appeal for outdoor enthusiasts.
Adding a unique element to the camping experience is the presence of nearby farm activity. One reviewer mentioned "nearby by farm noise was interesting - cattle off and on and a rooster starting at 4:15AM." While this might be considered a minor disturbance by some, it also provides a genuine connection to the rural environment and could be an interesting aspect for those not accustomed to farm sounds. The reviewer's lighthearted acceptance ("but hey, it's free") suggests that the charm of the natural setting outweighs this occasional noise.
Pine Ridge Recreation Area operates on an "honor based pay" system with a "suggested $8 donation/night." This unique approach to payment relies on the integrity of campers and makes it a very affordable option for those seeking "camping near me." The suggested donation model indicates a commitment to providing accessible outdoor recreation while relying on visitors to contribute to the upkeep of the area. The 14-day maximum stay limit ensures that the campground remains available for a wider range of users.
The campground is described as "small" and "peaceful," reinforcing its appeal for those seeking a quiet and less crowded camping experience. It is also noted as "not too far off the beaten path," suggesting a balance between accessibility and a sense of natural seclusion.
In terms of campsite types, Pine Ridge Recreation Area accommodates different preferences. "Some sites can be pulled into with smaller campers," indicating suitability for small recreational vehicles. For tent campers, there are areas where you "park along the camp road and pitch a tent," providing flexibility in choosing a campsite location.
For larger groups or families with children, the campground offers a "good sized field for activities." This open space provides an area for games, gatherings, and general outdoor recreation, enhancing the appeal for group camping trips.
While the overall environment is peaceful, one reviewer mentioned "occasional road noise from main road, (usually louder vehicles like motorcycles and such)." This is a factor to consider for those particularly sensitive to noise, although the reviewer indicates it is occasional and primarily from specific types of vehicles.
Finally, the reviews include a strong emphasis on responsible camping, with a reminder to "Please pick up your trash and don't be afraid to pick up from other's. Lets keep the land clean!" This reflects a community-minded approach to maintaining the natural beauty of Pine Ridge Recreation Area.

Pine Ridge Recreation Area Reviews
Overall great tent camping experience! Set in a picturesque pine forest, clean restroom, and multiple water spouts. Gate is closed to cars from 10PM-6AM so you don't have to worry about traffic, however front of the park is still open if you come in late. We visited mid-March during the week and there was only one other group. Trail head onsite for a nice hike. Nearby by farm noise was interesting - cattle off and on and a rooster starting at 4:15AM, but hey, it's free (suggested $8 donation/night). Highly recommend!

Jul 14, 2020 · Matt WIt's a small campground with 8 large campsites that could sleep 6-8 people (3-4 tents). Some campsites had two picnic tables, others had a covered food prep area Camp for the cedar ridge trail, the trailhead is located here. Highly recommend the trail, truly beautiful nature especially in the fall. A local grocery store and gas stations are located in Ashland - 15 minutes drive.
