Poland Spring Campground Introduce
For local users seeking "camping near me" in Maine, Poland Spring Campground, located at 128 Connor Ln, Poland, ME 04274, presents a somewhat contradictory picture based on recent customer reviews. While one reviewer expresses strong affection for the campground's rustic charm and amenities, others highlight significant concerns regarding site maintenance, cleanliness, and environmental issues. This introduction aims to provide an objective overview of the environment, services, and features based on the available feedback to help local users make an informed decision.
A Rustic Setting with Potential for Outdoor Activities
One positive aspect highlighted in the reviews is the campground's rustic nature and the availability of certain outdoor amenities. One enthusiastic reviewer described Poland Spring Campground as a "breathe of fresh air" and explicitly mentioned its rustic charm. This suggests that the campground might appeal to those who prefer a more natural and less manicured camping experience, embracing the inherent characteristics of an outdoor setting, such as potentially uneven terrain or natural ground cover.
The campground boasts a private lake that offers opportunities for fishing and kayaking, which is a significant draw for those seeking "camping near me" with water-based activities. The presence of a lake provides a scenic backdrop and a chance to engage in leisurely paddling or try your luck at fishing. Additionally, the campground features a playground for kids, making it a potential option for families with young children looking for on-site recreational activities.
The positive reviewer also mentioned "acres of wildlife" in the past, although a concerning issue regarding a sewer line impacting the private lake tempered their enthusiasm regarding this aspect. This suggests that the surrounding environment may indeed be rich in wildlife, offering opportunities for nature observation, but potential environmental concerns need to be taken into account.
Concerns Regarding Maintenance, Cleanliness, and Site Conditions
In stark contrast to the positive view, two other reviews paint a concerning picture regarding the maintenance and cleanliness of Poland Spring Campground. One reviewer described their stay as "incredibly disappointing," citing tightly packed sites with "little to no privacy." This lack of privacy can detract significantly from the camping experience, making it feel crowded and less like a natural escape.
More alarmingly, this reviewer reported finding "broken glass scattered around our site," including a smashed lightbulb by the fire pit. This is a serious safety hazard, especially for families with children, and indicates a lack of thorough site preparation between guests. The reviewer further noted that "the grounds and facilities are poorly maintained" and that "the wood line and walking trails were littered with dog poop," creating an unpleasant and unsanitary environment. These issues suggest a lack of attention to basic upkeep and cleanliness throughout the campground.
The second negative review echoed concerns about environmental issues, specifically mentioning a sewer line running into the private lake where the beach is located. This is a significant health and safety concern that would understandably deter visitors from swimming or engaging in other water activities in the lake. The fact that this discovery led the reviewer to vow to "never go back there" underscores the severity of this issue.
Both negative reviews highlight a lack of proactive maintenance and attention to cleanliness, which are fundamental aspects of a positive "camping near me" experience. The broken glass and dog waste create safety and hygiene concerns, while the sewer issue raises serious environmental red flags.
Mixed Feedback on Staff and Customer Service
The feedback regarding staff and customer service is also mixed. The reviewer who experienced the broken glass and dog waste reported the issues to the front desk, whose response was simply to "wish we had said something sooner." This reaction was perceived as dismissive and failing to take responsibility for pre-arrival site conditions. The reviewer felt that these were issues that should have been addressed before their arrival and that the response indicated a lack of effort and concern for guest inconvenience.
Conversely, the reviewer who enjoyed the rustic charm also mentioned a negative encounter with a security officer who was described as a "jerk and not helpful at all." This suggests potential inconsistencies in the behavior and helpfulness of the campground staff.
It's important for local users to note these varying experiences with staff, as it can significantly impact the overall quality of their "camping near me" getaway.
Features and Amenities: A Closer Look
Based on the reviews, the features and amenities at Poland Spring Campground include:
Private Lake: Offers opportunities for fishing and kayaking, but potential environmental concerns regarding a sewer line need to be considered.
Swimming (Potentially): The presence of a beach on the private lake suggests swimming is possible, but the sewer issue raises serious doubts about water quality.
Playground: A recreational area for children is available.
Rustic Environment: Appeals to those seeking a more natural and less manicured camping experience.
Pool: Mentioned by the positive reviewer as an amenity, offering an alternative to lake swimming.
Limited Privacy: Sites are reported to be packed tightly together.
The absence of mention of standard amenities like clean and well-maintained bathrooms, readily available trash disposal, or consistent site upkeep in the negative reviews is notable. The positive reviewer's comment about people complaining about "pine pitch, bumpy roads, and so on" suggests that the campground embraces a more rugged and natural state, which might be acceptable to some but a drawback for others seeking more manicured facilities.
Promotional Considerations and Recommendations for Local Users
Given the significant negative feedback regarding site conditions, cleanliness, and potential environmental issues, Poland Spring Campground might best appeal to a specific type of local user seeking a very rustic and basic "camping near me" experience who prioritizes the lake for fishing and kayaking and doesn't mind potentially crowded sites or inconsistent maintenance. The presence of a pool and playground could be a draw for families who are willing to overlook the reported shortcomings.
However, potential visitors should be aware of the reported broken glass, dog waste, and the serious concern about a sewer line impacting the swimming lake. It is strongly recommended that local users considering Poland Spring Campground contact the management directly to inquire about the current status of these issues and to get assurances about improvements in maintenance and environmental safety. Asking specific questions about site spacing, cleanliness protocols, and water quality is crucial before making a booking.
The positive reviewer's comment about those who complain needing to "stay at a motel" suggests that the campground might be positioning itself as a truly "rustic" experience, potentially with a lower expectation of manicured grounds and facilities. However, basic safety and sanitation (like the absence of broken glass and proper waste disposal) should be a minimum standard for any campground.
Local users who prioritize cleanliness, well-maintained facilities, and environmental safety might want to explore other "camping near me" options in the Poland, Maine area that have more consistently positive reviews regarding these aspects.
Conclusion
Poland Spring Campground offers a rustic camping experience in Poland, Maine, with the potential for enjoying a private lake for fishing and kayaking, as well as a pool and playground. However, recent reviews raise significant concerns about tightly packed sites, poor maintenance (including broken glass and dog waste), and a serious environmental issue with a sewer line potentially impacting the swimming lake. While one reviewer appreciates the rustic charm, others found the conditions disappointing and unsafe. Local users seeking "camping near me" should carefully weigh the potential benefits of the lake and other amenities against the reported shortcomings in cleanliness and maintenance. It is strongly recommended to contact the campground directly to inquire about the current status of the reported issues and to make an informed decision based on their individual priorities and expectations for a camping experience.

Poland Spring Campground Reviews
Our recent stay at this campground was incredibly disappointing. The sites are packed tightly together, offering little to no privacy. Upon arrival, we found broken glass scattered around our site, including what appeared to be a smashed lightbulb by the fire pit—completely unacceptable, especially with kids around. The grounds and facilities are poorly maintained, and the wood line and walking trails were littered with dog poop, making the environment even less pleasant. We tried to make the most of our short stay, but it's clear that effort is lacking. A poor attempt to “check the boxes”. When we reported these issues to the front desk, they simply "wished we had said something sooner." However, these are things that should be taken care of before guests arrive, not issues that should interrupt or inconvenience our trip. Unfortunately, we won’t be returning and cannot recommend this campground to others.
Aug 25, 2024 · Greg JohnsonMy daughter and I love this place. We were going to acres of wildlife until we found out the sewer behind our campsite ran into the private lake where the beach is. Never go back there and the security officer there was a jerk and not helpful at all. Poland springs 8s a breathe of fresh air. Rustic, with a pool and a lake to go fishing or kayaking in. Playground for kids. People who complain about pine pitch, bumpy roads, and so on need to stay at a motel!!! It's camping people!! Love your campground!!! This will be our third stay here.
May 22, 2024 · David StevensWe were stranded with our RV and very happy to find a site on Polar Spring Campground until the garage had time to fix our RV. Very spacious site with lots of little walks in the woods filled with mushrooms. The staff was helpful and friendly
Aug 19, 2024 · Marijke Wilhelmus Rob LandmanMy wife and family have been camping here for years. And always went for clean up weekend. I tryed many times to book cleaning up weekend. Never got contacted back. I find this very disrespectful. The lady on the phone sounds very nasty. Long storie short. When it went to new management the place went to hell. My family wont be going back. They act like we want their buissness, Not them wanting ours..If you go here. Good luck.
Mar 23, 2024 · Mike ChevarieHorrible experience! Trees rained pine pitch continuously all over our new motorhome and Jeep. Took days to clean our vehicles. Our neighbors who are seasonal residents were complaining about it also. To walk anywhere pine needles and sap stuck to our shoes in layers. The laundry room was full of spiders and cobwebs and appears to have not been cleaned in awhile. We had to clean the washers and dryers and flat surface’s before we could do our laundry. Fortunately, we had to leave early due to a sudden death in our family. Of course no refund for the remaining half of our stay. Expected that part. Very disappointed! Will never be back!
