Priest River Recreation Area Introduce
Looking for "camping near me" in the Priest River, Idaho area that offers convenient amenities? The Priest River Recreation Area, located at 7120 US-2, Priest River, ID, might be an option to consider, especially for those seeking a place with practical facilities. Based on recent customer feedback, this recreation area provides some notable advantages alongside a significant drawback to be aware of. If you're a local user exploring camping options, let's delve into what Priest River Recreation Area has to offer.
Environment: Convenient Location with Proximity to a Major Highway
The location of Priest River Recreation Area along US-2 offers easy accessibility, which can be a significant plus for travelers. However, this proximity to a major highway is also the primary environmental factor influencing the experience, as highlighted by multiple reviewers. The campground is described as "very loud" due to the constant car traffic. This noise level is a crucial consideration for those seeking a peaceful and quiet natural retreat. While the convenience of access is undeniable, the auditory environment might not be ideal for everyone, particularly for longer stays.
Despite the noise, the campground does offer large campsite spaces, providing ample room for setting up your tents or parking your vehicles. This spaciousness can contribute to a more comfortable camping experience in terms of physical area.
Services and Amenities: Clean Facilities and Essential Conveniences
One of the standout positives of Priest River Recreation Area, according to reviews, is the cleanliness and availability of its facilities. The bathrooms are reported to be clean and offer the added benefit of free showers, which is a significant perk for campers looking to freshen up. Additionally, the presence of large sinks with hot water for dishwashing is another valuable amenity, making meal cleanup more convenient.
Easy access to water is also noted as a pro, which is essential for drinking, cooking, and general campsite needs. Furthermore, for those who may have forgotten firewood, it is available for purchase at reasonable prices within the recreation area. These services contribute to a more comfortable and self-sufficient camping experience.
However, one reviewer mentioned the occurrence of lawn mowing at 7 am, which could be disruptive to those hoping for a leisurely morning. This suggests that while the facilities are appreciated, some maintenance activities might impact the tranquility of the early hours.
Features and Activities: Primarily a Base for Camping
The reviews provided don't extensively detail specific recreational activities within the Priest River Recreation Area itself, beyond the camping. The mention of it being a "great place to spend the day camping" suggests that it serves primarily as a convenient and functional campground. The proximity to Priest River and the surrounding region likely offers opportunities for other activities such as fishing, hiking, and exploring, although these are not directly mentioned as features of the recreation area itself in the provided feedback.
The focus of the reviews is more on the practical aspects of the campground, such as the facilities and the noise level, rather than on extensive recreational offerings within the immediate area.
Potential Drawbacks: Noise from the Highway
The most significant drawback highlighted by the customer reviews is the noise emanating from the adjacent major highway (US-2). Multiple reviewers explicitly mentioned the loudness of the car traffic, indicating that this is a consistent and noticeable aspect of staying at Priest River Recreation Area. For those sensitive to noise or seeking a truly quiet natural setting, this could be a major deterrent. One reviewer even stated that if their stay had been longer than one night, they "wouldn't be so happy" due to the noise.

Very loud due to the car traffic- Lawn mowing at 7am!
Jun 27, 2023 · Daniel StankowskiGreat place to spend the day camping could have been nicer and had it been a little quieter. Our campsite was next to the major highway and was very loud. the spaces were very large and they have showers and water available. Firewood is also available for reasonable prices if you forgot yours.
Jun 26, 2022 · Tracy BarrazaClean, well organized, helpful folks. I Moto camp and enjoy a shower every day so these were nice :-) Close to restaurants in town. Great beach and water access. Lots of families which was good for me. But if you're Scrooge McDuck stay somewhere else.
Aug 30, 2020 · Chris PaineGreat place to stay. The camp hosts were amazing and very friendly! Campsites were clean. They provide bathrooms and showers! Lake was very nice too. Will definitely come back.
Jul 11, 2023 · Breeanna JWe love the Mudhole and have camped here quite a few times. Rangers and attendants are friendly, campsites are well taken care of, bathrooms and showers are clean (which we were pleasantly surprised to find out are free now), the river and beach area are beautiful and the whole area (for the most part) is kid friendly. The only reason I give it four stars was because my daughter was playing with a five year old who was stung several times at the play area. Turns out, there were several hornet nests under the play area toys (underneath the ramp kids go up and down). Just keep an eye on that if you have kids.
