R Campground Introduce
If you're a local resident in or around Charles City, Iowa, and searching for "camping near me," R Campground, located at 1910 Clark St, Charles City, IA 50616, USA, presents itself as a potential option. With a listed phone number of (641) 257-0549 and a mobile contact at +1 641-257-0549, it appears to be a locally accessible campground. However, based on recent customer reviews, it's crucial for local users to be aware of both the potential advantages and significant drawbacks before considering a stay at R Campground.
One positive aspect highlighted in the reviews is the cleanliness of the shower house and restrooms. One visitor described it as "well kept," noting the presence of automatic scent sprayers and a large fan. This suggests that while other areas of the campground may have issues, the facilities for personal hygiene are maintained to a satisfactory standard. For local campers who value clean restrooms and showers, this could be a notable point in favor of R Campground.
Another potentially positive experience mentioned was for a tent camper. This visitor reported that their designated tent site was flooded, and the management allowed them to pitch their tent in an RV site instead. They described this as a "great experience" and noted that the campground was "really quiet." This suggests that for tent campers, particularly those seeking a quiet environment, R Campground might offer a more favorable experience, especially if they encounter any issues with their original site.
However, the majority of the detailed feedback from a full-time RV traveler paints a less flattering picture of R Campground, particularly for those with larger recreational vehicles. This review raises several significant concerns that local RV owners should carefully consider when looking for "camping near me."
One of the primary issues highlighted was the lack of clear direction and the self-service nature of the registration process. The reviewer noted that despite calling ahead for directions, there was no answer upon arrival. The instructions to register at the laundry house led to an empty building, forcing the visitor to rely on confusing signage and a map. This lack of clear guidance upon arrival could be frustrating for any camper, especially after a long journey.
The confusing map and the absence of clear signage for individual campsites were also major drawbacks. The reviewer, an experienced RV traveler familiar with campground layouts, found the map "extremely confusing," particularly the lack of color-coding to indicate amperage (30 amp vs. 50 amp) for the electrical hookups. The absence of signage for the sites made it difficult to navigate the park and locate suitable spots, leading to unnecessary driving around, especially problematic for large rigs.
Another significant concern raised was the condition and levelness of the RV sites. The reviewer and their spouse had difficulty finding a semi-level spot and found that most of the sites they tried were "EXTREMELY un-level," to the point where they believed it would have been impossible to level their big rig even with leveling tools. This is a critical issue for RV owners, as proper leveling is essential for the functionality of appliances and overall comfort. Local RVers should inquire specifically about the levelness of the sites and whether they are suitable for different sizes of RVs.
The condition of the picnic tables was also noted as "extremely worn" and potentially posing "some safety concerns." While seemingly a minor detail, the state of the amenities contributes to the overall camping experience, and local users might want to assess these for themselves if possible.
Privacy was another significant concern. The reviewer's assigned site (NWT29) was described as being in the backyard of a nearby house, offering "zero privacy" for both the homeowners and the campers. This lack of separation from residential properties could detract from the feeling of being in a natural or secluded camping environment that many local users might seek when looking for "camping near me."
Furthermore, the reviewer noted that half of the park was closed off and appeared to be in better condition, while the open section was described as "extremely trashy, dirty and appeared abandoned." This discrepancy in the condition of different parts of the campground is a serious concern and suggests a lack of consistent maintenance. Local users might want to inquire about the operational status and condition of all areas of the campground before booking.
Finally, the review highlighted a potential issue with GPS navigation for big rigs. The GPS directed them to a tight turn onto Clark St., causing them significant stress while maneuvering their large RV. Local RV owners approaching from certain directions might want to be aware of this potential navigational challenge.
The proximity of a "convenient /liquor store" in front of the campground was also mentioned negatively by the reviewer, suggesting it contributed to a less desirable atmosphere. While this is subjective, local users might want to consider the surroundings of the campground when making their decision.
In conclusion, R Campground in Charles City, IA, offers a potentially convenient "camping near me" option for local residents. The clean shower house and the positive experience of a tent camper are notable. However, the detailed negative review from an experienced RV traveler raises significant concerns regarding the lack of clear direction, confusing layout, un-level and poorly maintained RV sites, privacy issues, and the overall condition of a significant portion of the campground. Local RV owners, in particular, should exercise caution and consider these points carefully. It is highly recommended that local users contact R Campground directly at (641) 257-0549 or +1 641-257-0549 to inquire about the current condition of the sites, the registration process, signage, and any recent improvements or changes. Visiting the campground in person before booking, if feasible, would also be a prudent step for local users to ensure it meets their expectations for a "camping near me" experience.

R Campground Reviews
First and foremost, we are full-time RVs since 2022 and had the privilege to visit plenty RV parks and resorts. From county parks to state parks to luxury RV resorts we visited all kinds of properties. With that said we found that we enjoy campsites that are leveled, easy access, big rig, friendly, and easy to navigate throughout the RV park.We found none of those things once we pulled into this RV park! Unfortunately, yes, this is self service, but there is no CLEAR direction whatsoever once you enter the campground. When I called to make a reservation, I was instructed by the gentleman to call as I arrive so he could provide directions. I called 30 mins prior to arrival ….. but no answer.Once you arrive, you’re instructed to go to the Laundry house to register. I knocked, walked in but the place was empty.I read the signage and filled out a form and grabbed a map.Now I’ve seen PLENTY maps and understand logistics but this was extremely confusing. Typically, you see different colors to indicate whether it’s a 30 amp spot or 50 amp. We need something long with full hookups, which the gentleman on the phone confirmed. After this …. You’re basically on your own, I decided to get off instead of having my husband pull the rig around since it’s a big rig.But we found that we basically have to drive around to locate a semi level spot.We tried a couple different sites, but most of them were EXTREMELY un-level & there was NO WAY we would’ve been able to level the rig even with all of the right tools. (Which we did.)The other disadvantage is there’s no signage for the sites, which made it even harder to navigate throughout the park. The picnic tables are extremely worn and would have some safety concerns. Lastly, the park is surrounded by homes …. The site we ended up at (NWT29) was the backyard of one of those houses. Zero privacy for the home owners or us.Half of the park was closed offer which appeared to be a little nicer and more level, however, the rest of the park was extremely trashy, dirty and appeared abandoned.Lastly, the final thing to point out if you have a big rig …. GPS took us to 200th St & Clark St …… which was EXTREMELY TIGHT TO TURN onto Clark St. We cringed as we made the turn. 😬Not sure how this place got an 8.9 review and why others have stated this was a nice park because it’s anything but. Not to mention the convenient /liquor store in front of the campground which should’ve been our first instinct to RUN!Needless to say this our LEAST favorite stay. It’s only a one nighter so we’ll make it work but anyone with a BIG RIG 40 foot + should really reconsider.I would not recommend staying here.
Mar 26, 2025 · Jewelz GarciaThe shower house/restrooms is well kept. They keep it clean, they have automatic scent sprayers so it smells good, and there is a large fan you can turn on in there. The shower house itself is 5 stars! The tent site was all flooded out so they let us pitch tent in the RV site. Great experience. I'll be coming back again for sure. It was also really quiet!
Jul 05, 2024 · DawnUpdated review:I’ve stayed here many times now. I’m always impressed. Everyone is very nice and helpful. All of the hookups are easy to use. There is a laundry facility, and they have quarters available for you. They have a shower room and an area to sit and relax. They fill propane here as well. There are canoe rentals. There is a playground. All of the sites look very nice and very well maintained. They are gravel and I have always had a level site. The river is beautiful. There is also a pond. Lots of land to walk around. I still highly recommend!Previous review:Very nice campground, very convenient! Open in the winter, has full hook ups that work perfectly! Cute little town and it’s right on a river. It’s really well maintained. I would definitely stay again, and I highly recommend!
