Red HalfLog Encampment Introduce
For local users exploring "camping near me" options and considering cabin rentals in the Lake Itasca, Minnesota area, the Red HalfLog Encampment, located in Lake Itasca, MN 56470, USA, presents a property with both appealing aspects and significant drawbacks, according to a detailed review from a recent guest who booked through Vrbo. It's important for potential renters to be aware of the full picture painted by this firsthand account, as the reviewer expressed concerns about the objectivity of reviews on the booking platform itself.
The environment of the Red HalfLog Encampment is acknowledged as a positive aspect. The reviewer awarded one star for its "great location on the Fishhook lake," noting "nice views." This suggests that the cabin benefits from a scenic lakeside setting, potentially offering opportunities for enjoying the waterfront and the natural beauty of the Lake Itasca region. Fishhook Lake is known for its recreational opportunities and picturesque surroundings, which could be a significant draw for those seeking a lakeside getaway.
In terms of cleanliness, the reviewer also gave one star, stating that the inside of the cabin was clean, specifically mentioning the carpets, tile, and beds. This indicates that the basic interior upkeep of the lodging met the guest's standards. However, this was one of only two positive points raised in the detailed review.
The services and features, according to the reviewer's experience, appear to be areas of concern. The guest reported a lack of responsiveness from the owner to questions. Furthermore, they recounted an instance where the owner allegedly attempted to alter their existing reservation to accommodate another customer, which raises questions about booking reliability and customer service. At the property itself, bicycles were purportedly offered, but the reviewer found that only three out of six or seven were functional, which negatively impacted their planned bike outing. A significant limitation noted was the absence of internet service and functional television, with the TVs described as merely covering wall spaces. The selection of water toys was also described as "very limited," consisting of a leaky paddle boat, one leaky paddleboard, and one canoe. These points suggest that the advertised or expected amenities might not be fully available or in good working order.
A particularly noteworthy feature, as described by the reviewer, is a booklet provided to guests upon arrival. While seemingly intended to be humorous and welcoming, the reviewer interpreted it as heavily emphasizing the guests' responsibility for maintaining and cleaning the property. The booklet allegedly contained extensive instructions on cleaning procedures, including how to start and stop water, specific cleaning tasks, where to find supplies, how to vacuum, and how to strip beds. The reviewer expressed surprise at the level of cleaning expected from guests, questioning when there would be time to actually enjoy the lake. The check-in time was listed as after 3 pm, with a "sharp" 11 am checkout, which the booklet reportedly justified by claiming that four hours were needed for cleaning – a justification the reviewer found ironic given the expectation that guests would handle much of the cleaning themselves.
Adding to the list of guest responsibilities, the booklet reportedly demanded that guests collect and remove their own garbage. The reviewer stated that they had to transport their garbage back to Fargo for disposal, implying that there was no provision for on-site garbage collection. This policy was seen as a significant inconvenience and a further indication of a lack of hospitality.
Promotional information is not directly available from this review. However, the reviewer did mention that the Red HalfLog Encampment is "not cheap," suggesting that it is positioned as a higher-end rental despite the issues encountered. The reviewer's concluding remarks advise potential guests to weigh the "nice view" against the significant inconveniences and the expectation of performing extensive cleaning and waste removal, suggesting that there might be better options available where guests are treated with more traditional hospitality.
For local users considering the Red HalfLog Encampment for a "camping near me" experience in a cabin setting near Lake Itasca, this detailed guest review serves as a crucial source of information. While the location on Fishhook Lake and the interior cleanliness are noted as positives, the reported lack of owner responsiveness, the issue with reservation handling, the limited and malfunctioning amenities (bicycles, water toys, no internet or TV), and the extensive cleaning and garbage disposal responsibilities placed on guests are significant drawbacks to consider. The discrepancy between the perceived cost and the level of service and convenience experienced by this guest should also be taken into account.
Prospective renters are strongly advised to seek additional reviews and information from various sources, if available, to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the Red HalfLog Encampment. Direct communication with the owner or property management, if possible, to clarify policies on amenities, cleaning expectations, and garbage disposal would also be prudent before making a booking. It is important to align expectations with the actual experience offered to ensure a satisfactory "camping near me" getaway. This detailed account highlights the importance of looking beyond basic descriptions and considering the practicalities and potential inconveniences based on real guest experiences.

Red HalfLog Encampment Reviews
We had our booking through Vrbo. Well, Vrbo doesn't let us do a review for this place. They have a very special, selective process on who can leave reviews there. A process that favors the owner and not the customer. So I have a doubt you would get the whole picture in the Vrbo reviews page. That said, we stayed at the Red HalfLog Encampment for the Labor day weekend, 2021 and here is the raw data:One star for Location - great location on the Fishhook lake. Nice views. One star for cleanness. It was clean inside - carpets, tile, beds.Unfortunately, the rest of the story is not so positive, so we will skip giving more stars for this place.1. The owner did not respond to questions.2. They had the audacity to offer different days to us, just to please another customer; long after we had our reservation made.3. At the actual place - bicycles were offered, but when we tried to use them - only three out of the 6-7 left in the garage actually worked; so our bike outing was ruined.4. There is no Internet provided nor is the TV getting any programs or channels. The television sets are just to cover places in the wall.5. There is a very limited selection of water toys - a paddle boat with leaking water where shaft connects to paddles. So, one leaky paddle board, plus one canoe. However, the cherry on the cake is taken by the booklet given to customers before their arrival. It is an attempt at humor and to make you feel cheerful and happy about your visit to the HalfLog camp. In fact it is telling you that your stay at the property shall be spent on and I mean only on taking care of the property - how to clean this and that, how to start the water, stop the water, to not do this, but make sure you take cleaning supplies from here, how to vacuum all floors, strip beds of sheets and pillow cases, the instructions go on and on. Nothing is missed in the cleaning and housekeeping orders. One wonders when does one get time to actually look at the lake. You can only check-in after 3 pm, and check out "sharp" at 11 am. The booklet explains this inconvenience is needed, because 4 hours are required for cleaning. Sounds like a joke, right? After all the cleaning was completed by the guests already. Well, yes, we still wonder what is the cleaning crew hired for? Drinking tea and enjoying the lake views?Collect your garbage the booklet demands! And because this place does not want to pay for garbage collection, or their cleaning crew (if they actually exists) is actually fidgeting their fingers or doing something else not even remotely connected to cleaning, or garbage, the garbage is taken with you and by you - the customer. Yes, that is right, you are required to take your garbage when you leave the premises! We had to bring back our garbage all the way to Fargo for disposal. So, apparently, the word "hospitality" and this place have never met.Our conclusion is - the owner of this property's only care is to collect as much money as possible. Note this place is not cheap! This is our humble impression - you decide - nice view and garbage in your car on the way back home, or find a place where you're actually treated as a real guest.
