Rock Creek Recreation Camp Introduce
Looking for "camping near me" that offers more than just a place to pitch a tent? Rock Creek Recreation Camp, located in Targhee National Forest at Forest Rd 20475, Ashton, ID 83420, USA, presents a unique option, particularly for group outings and potentially specialized camps. While the available information and user reviews provide insights into its facilities and atmosphere, it's important for local users to consider all aspects when planning a visit.
Nestled within the scenic Targhee National Forest in Idaho, Rock Creek Recreation Camp benefits from a potentially beautiful natural environment. Targhee National Forest is known for its diverse landscapes, including forests, mountains, and rivers, suggesting that campers can expect picturesque scenery surrounding the camp. The specific type of environment immediately around the camp might include wooded areas providing shade, open spaces for activities, and the presence of Rock Creek itself, although this is not explicitly detailed. The elevation and specific location within the forest will influence the climate and the types of flora and fauna present. The reviews mention "beautiful scenery all around," indicating an attractive natural setting.
Based on user reviews, Rock Creek Recreation Camp appears to offer a range of facilities that go beyond typical primitive campgrounds. These include toilets and showers, which are noted as "great" and "well maintained." Some cabins are equipped with bunk beds, although campers are advised to bring their own mattresses. The presence of cabins suggests the possibility of accommodation beyond tent camping, potentially making it suitable for larger groups or those seeking more structured lodging. A significant feature highlighted in the reviews is a pool, which was described as a "big hit," particularly for a girls' camp. This amenity is somewhat unusual for a forest service campground and suggests a more recreational focus for this site.
The camp also boasts a "huge lawn area for games and activities," indicating ample space for group gatherings and outdoor recreation. The presence of "a variety of different fire pits that are easily accessible to all" suggests that campfires are permitted and encouraged, providing a central gathering point for groups, especially in the evenings. The overall impression is of a facility designed to accommodate groups and provide a range of recreational opportunities.
However, the user reviews also mention some specific conditions and potential considerations. One review notes, "It's great if you're a girl and allowed to use the pool. Pretty good for everyone else," which might imply that access to certain facilities, like the pool, could have specific guidelines or be primarily intended for certain user groups. Another review, seemingly from someone involved in organizing a girls' camp, provides more detailed insights into the camp's policies and infrastructure related to male chaperones. It mentions segregated bathroom and cabin facilities for male chaperones (a concrete floor is noted for the sleeping area), as well as a "badge in and out" system for them, with potential repercussions for non-compliance depending on the host. This suggests that the camp may have specific protocols in place, particularly when hosting single-gender groups, and these protocols should be understood by all users.
The reviews also touch upon the management and atmosphere of the camp. While the majority of camp hosts are described as "awesome," there have been "a couple of bad eggs in the past." This highlights the importance of potential variability in the visitor experience depending on the specific hosts on duty. The positive reviews indicate that good hosts are welcoming and even invited to dinner by the campers, suggesting a friendly and community-oriented atmosphere when the hosts are well-received. The comment that "depending on the host the lawn is sometimes more important than the girls that play on it" is somewhat ambiguous but could suggest potential inconsistencies in priorities or management styles.
One enthusiastic review from a girls' camp organizer strongly recommends Rock Creek, praising the "beautiful scenery," the popularity of the pool and large grassy area, the accessible fire pits, and the overall "relaxing, memorable girls camp experience." They do, however, recommend bringing "lots of bug spray due to mosquitoes," indicating that insect activity can be a factor to consider, particularly during certain times of the year.
For local users considering Rock Creek Recreation Camp for "camping near me," it appears to be a facility geared towards group camping, with amenities like cabins with bunk beds, a pool, a large lawn for activities, and multiple fire pits. The presence of toilets and showers adds a level of convenience not always found in more rustic campgrounds. The positive experiences of the girls' camp suggest it is well-suited for such organized groups, and the beautiful scenery of Targhee National Forest is a significant draw.
However, potential users should be aware of the specific conditions mentioned in the reviews, such as potential guidelines regarding pool access and the protocols in place for chaperones of single-gender groups. It might be beneficial to contact the camp directly at the provided phone number, (208) 569-2624 or mobile +1 208-569-2624, to inquire about specific policies, availability, and any current conditions or recommendations (such as the level of mosquito activity). Given the variability in host experiences mentioned, it might also be helpful to get a sense of the current management if possible.

Rock Creek Recreation Camp Reviews
It's great if you're a girl and allowed to use the pool. Pretty good for everyone else.Men are almost a necessary evil. For girls camp, you have to have male chaperones with each group. They have their own bathroom and cabin where they can sleep segregated from the rest of the group on a concrete floor. And they have to badge in and out (better not screw it up or you'll be in trouble, depending on the host). But the facilities are great. Toilets, showers, bunk beds in some of the cabins (bring your own mattress) and I believe I mentioned a pool. Everything is well maintained. There's a huge lawn area for games and activities. Once again, depending on the host the lawn is sometimes more important than the girls that play on it.But for the most part, the camp hosts are awesome. There have just been a couple of bad eggs in the past. We usually invite the ones we like to dinner and love hanging out with them.
Jun 10, 2024 · Bri CWe had girls camp here Wednesday and Thursday of last week, and we loved it! Beautiful scenery all around! The onIy recommendation I would make is to bring lots of bug spray due to mosquitoes. The pool was a big hit among our group! Large grassy area to play yard games was also a hit! They have a variety of different fire pits that are easily accessible to all! We had a blast around the campfire after a long, fun day! 10 out of 10 would recommend Rock Creek for Girls camp to anyone looking for a relaxing, memorable girls camp experience!
Jun 18, 2024 · Allison WilwandA fabulous group camping experience! We did girls camp here with 100+ girls. The facilities were well maintained. Girls loved the pool!
Jun 24, 2024 · Heather CameronGreat facility! Very large camp owned by the LDS church and is used by families and youth groups by reservation. A dozen or so cabins and a stage/fireplace area. Pool and massive irrigated grassy area. It's a few miles up Cave Falls road from Ashton. No tenting allowed due to bears and Forest Service requirements.
Jul 02, 2016 · Scott TomlinsonI know, it may be hard to leave your phones and some friends behind for a week, but as you do it, I promise you that the spirit will touch you in so many different ways. Sometimes, it's good to get outside, connect with God, and enjoy the beauty surrounding you. Girls camp was hands down one of the best experiences of my life.Monday: We arrived at girls camp to a complete and total downpour. We had two or three trailers to unload, but with all of us helping, we were able to get it done within an hour. We felt the spirit as we unpacked our bags, and laid out our things for the next week.Tuesday: Today we woke up bright and early, eager to get the day started. Those who were assigned to cook breakfast while the rest of us got up and ready. That was a pretty chill day. In the afternoon, we went to the rope course. There, we had to army climb under string (long story), and balance on a log teeter totter while singing a song😂.Wednessday: We drove 30 minutes to mesa falls and hiked to the lower falls then up to the higher falls. Most gorgeous thing I have ever seen!! Then we ate lunch and came back to the cabin to do some relaxation time.Thursday: We woke up bright and early, knowing that we had a service project to do. After breakfast we went to the amphitheater to recive instructions. Half of us went to stack wood, while me and the other half went to shovel gravel and do some landscaping. It was hot out, but we got it done willingly and whole heartedly.
