San Elijo State Beach Campground Introduce
For local users in the Cardiff, California area searching for "Camping Near Me" that combines the beauty of the coast with convenient access to local amenities, San Elijo State Beach Campground, located at 2324 S Coast Hwy 101, Cardiff, CA 92007, USA, presents a compelling option. Based on recent customer reviews, this campground offers a unique blend of natural beauty and accessibility, making it a favorite for many despite a notable environmental factor to consider.
One of the standout features of San Elijo State Beach Campground, as highlighted by a returning camper, is its prime location that allows "access to plenty of places to walk to have dinner, shopping, etc." This suggests that the campground is situated within reasonable proximity to the commercial areas of Cardiff, offering the convenience of dining out and accessing shopping without the need for extensive travel. This accessibility to local amenities is a significant advantage for campers who appreciate having these options readily available.
However, the same reviewer also points out a significant environmental consideration: "Mostly the freight trains that come roaring right by the campsite." This indicates that the campground is located adjacent to or very near active railway tracks. The noise from these trains is described as substantial, with the reviewer noting that "Even ear plugs won’t prevent you from being woken up if you’re near the road adjacent to the tracks." This is a crucial piece of information for potential campers, particularly those sensitive to noise, as it could impact their overall experience and sleep quality, depending on their campsite location within the campground.
Despite the noise from the trains, the reviewer concludes with a positive sentiment, stating, "With that said, I would still come back here as it’s a beautiful area and the campgrounds are pretty well maintained." This suggests that the overall appeal of the location and the quality of the campground itself outweigh the noise issue for many visitors. The "beautiful area" likely refers to the stunning coastal scenery that San Elijo State Beach is known for.
Another first-time visitor to San Elijo State Beach Campground also reported having "a great time!" Their review provides more detail about the campsite features, describing them as "Typical sites, small trees and bushes in between for some privacy, picnic table, fire ring …nice!" This indicates that the campsites offer a standard level of amenities expected at a state beach campground, including some degree of privacy provided by vegetation, as well as essential camping equipment like a picnic table and a fire ring for campfires and cooking.
For many, a significant highlight of San Elijo State Beach Campground is its dog-friendly policy. The reviewer enthusiastically mentioned, "Best part for us was the dog friendly beach! Pennie & Joe loved it! Look for Tower 16….at the south end of campground ~ dogs can get paws in sand from there, south! When the tide is out, it’s a nice wide beach for walking and playing! 🐾🏖️." This is a major draw for dog owners looking for "Camping Near Me" where their furry companions are welcome on the beach. The specific instruction to look for Tower 16 at the south end of the campground provides valuable information for accessing the designated dog-friendly beach area. The reviewer also notes that the beach is wide when the tide is out, providing ample space for dogs to walk and play, and commends the human visitors for keeping the area clean ("humans did a good job of keeping things ‘picked up’"). This positive feedback underscores the appeal of San Elijo State Beach Campground for dog lovers.
The first-time visitor concludes by expressing their intention to return, stating, "Look forward to coming back!" This reiterates the positive overall experience despite any typical campground features or the potential for train noise.
Based on these reviews, the environment of San Elijo State Beach Campground is characterized by its beautiful coastal location with easy access to a dog-friendly beach. The campsites offer a degree of privacy and standard amenities. However, the proximity to active freight train tracks is a significant environmental factor that can impact the peace and quiet of the campground, particularly for sites closer to the tracks.
In terms of services and features, the campground provides typical campsite amenities such as picnic tables and fire rings. The most notable feature is the access to a dog-friendly beach area at the south end of the campground (near Tower 16). The well-maintained nature of the campgrounds, as mentioned by one reviewer, suggests that basic upkeep and facilities are likely in good condition, although specific details about restrooms, showers, or other amenities are not provided in these reviews.
No specific promotional information is included in the provided text. Local users interested in potential discounts, seasonal offers, or booking information should visit the official California State Parks website or contact the San Elijo State Beach Campground directly through their reservation system. State beach campgrounds often have a reservation system that allows booking campsites in advance, especially during peak seasons and weekends. It would be advisable to check for availability and pricing through these official channels.
For local users searching for "Camping Near Me" that offers beach access, is dog-friendly, and provides convenience to local amenities, San Elijo State Beach Campground presents a compelling option. However, it is crucial to be aware of the potential noise from the nearby freight trains, especially when selecting a campsite. Reading additional reviews and potentially consulting a campground map (if available online) might help in choosing a site that balances proximity to the beach and amenities with potential noise levels. The positive experiences shared by multiple visitors, particularly dog owners, suggest that the overall benefits of camping at San Elijo State Beach outweigh the noise factor for many.
In conclusion, San Elijo State Beach Campground offers a unique coastal camping experience with the significant advantage of a dog-friendly beach and convenient access to dining and shopping in Cardiff. While the noise from adjacent freight trains is a notable environmental factor to consider, the well-maintained campgrounds and beautiful location continue to attract visitors. This is one of my favorite places to camp that allows you access to plenty of places to walk to have dinner, shopping, etc. There’s some cons of course. Mostly the freight trains that come roaring right by the campsite. Apr 09, 2025 · Justin DFirst time staying at San Elijo SB Campground ~ had a great time! Typical sites, small trees and bushes in between for some privacy , picnic table, fire ring …nice!Best part for us was the dog friendly beach! Pennie & Joe loved it! Look for Tower 16….at the south end of campground ~ dogs can get paws in sand from there, south! When the tide is out, it’s a nice wide beach for walking and playing! 🐾🏖️. We saw lots of dogs having fun and it seemed like the humans did a good job of keeping things “picked up”…which is great because it’s so fun to have these areas where dogs are allowed!Look forward to coming back!
Dec 30, 2024 · Michelle Ewing (Maggie)I had a family reunion and camped here that night. I drove right in at 11pm and security was immediately on me and followed me to my site in their vehicle. I actually liked that part and the fellas were friendly and were just making sure I wasn't a hoodlum. These campsites are extremely close together and were in the zone to be heavily impacted by the train on and off throughout the night. It was loud, as well with people walking around and jogging really early before the sun was up. The facilities and grounds were clean and orderly. The convenience of this campground was alluring to me. After staying here, I'd pick somewhere else if I was wanting peace and quiet and space or if on vacation. Thank you for having me.
Jan 16, 2025 · Brandon TrustGreat spot to camp for a day or two, prices are moderately affordable depending on the spot you select, premium spots being around $75 per night. Dump station for $10 and potable water area is available, restrooms and also token showers which are $1 for 2 minutes. (Token machine is at the office, not one located at the actual showers). Highly recommend this location, it’s very conveniently located to tons of restaurants, shops and night life while also feeling very peaceful and relaxed around the ocean. 🌊
Feb 14, 2025 · Justin BrummageWe stayed for 5 nights and had a blast! The weather was perfect. The beach was amazing. The facilities were clean. I will definitely go back!
