Sand Mesa Campground

Wind River Reservation, Shoshoni, WY 82649, USA

4.0
I would give this place 5 stars but drinking and gravity can kick your butt after dark. Hooked into a fish, fell off the Mesa and landed in the boulders while reeling it in. I did catch the fish (see picture) but I'm still sore, bruised and cut up from that epic battle between man, beast, and physics. - Jim Beckmann

Sand Mesa Campground Introduce

Are you a local resident in Wyoming seeking a unique and adventurous camping experience with excellent fishing opportunities? Consider Sand Mesa Campground, located within the Wind River Reservation near Shoshoni, WY 82649. While listed under the "camping near me" category, it's important to note that the available reviews provide a somewhat limited and cautionary glimpse into this particular campground, highlighting both its potential and some of its inherent challenges.

One of the most striking aspects of Sand Mesa Campground, based on a vivid customer review, is its direct access to water, which is noted to be "deep there." This feature immediately suggests that the campground is likely situated along a significant body of water, offering opportunities for fishing, and potentially other water-based activities. For local anglers, this direct water access could be a major draw, promising the chance to fish right from the campground area.

The experience of one reviewer, while memorable, serves as a significant cautionary tale. This individual recounted an incident involving hooking a fish, subsequently falling off the "Mesa" and landing in boulders while reeling it in. Despite the resulting soreness, bruises, and cuts, the reviewer did manage to catch the fish. This narrative strongly implies that the terrain around the campground, particularly near the water access points, may be uneven, potentially steep (hence the "Mesa"), and rocky. Campers and anglers visiting Sand Mesa Campground should be acutely aware of their surroundings, especially after dark or when engaged in activities near the water's edge. The mention of "drinking and gravity" playing a role serves as a reminder to exercise caution and be mindful of potential hazards.

The review also provides a crucial piece of information regarding RV camping at Sand Mesa Campground. The reviewer who did not stay but stopped to check it out noted that it "didn't have many places for rv camping." This suggests that the campground may primarily cater to tent camping or have very limited facilities and space for recreational vehicles. Local users with RVs should take this into consideration and potentially inquire specifically about the availability and suitability of sites for their vehicles before planning a trip. It's possible that the campground is more oriented towards a more primitive or backcountry camping style.

Given the limited information, it's challenging to paint a comprehensive picture of the environment, services, and features of Sand Mesa Campground. However, we can extrapolate some details based on the reviews:

**Environment:** The name "Sand Mesa" itself suggests a landscape characterized by sandy terrain and elevated, flat-topped landforms (mesas). The review mentioning falling off a mesa and landing in boulders further supports the idea of a potentially rugged and uneven environment near the water access. This type of terrain could offer unique scenic views and a sense of wilderness, but it also necessitates caution and appropriate footwear and gear for campers.

**Services:** The reviews do not explicitly mention any services or amenities available at Sand Mesa Campground. There is no mention of restrooms, water sources, picnic tables, fire pits, or hookups for RVs. The absence of such mentions, coupled with the limited RV camping, suggests that the campground might offer very basic or no formal services. Campers should likely be prepared for a self-sufficient experience, bringing their own water, cooking equipment, and other necessities, and adhering to Leave No Trace principles.

**Features:** The primary feature highlighted is the direct access to water, which is deep and suitable for fishing. The unique mesa topography also stands out as a defining characteristic of the area. For adventurous individuals and anglers who prioritize direct water access and are comfortable with potentially challenging terrain, these could be significant features. However, the limited number of RV spots might be a constraint for some local users.

**Promotional Information:** There is no explicit promotional information available in the provided reviews. However, the potential for excellent fishing due to the deep water access could be considered an implicit draw for anglers. The unique and perhaps somewhat wild nature of the "Sand Mesa" environment might also appeal to those seeking a more adventurous and less conventional camping experience.

For local users considering Sand Mesa Campground, it's crucial to weigh the potential benefits against the possible challenges. The direct water access for fishing is a significant positive, as is the unique mesa landscape which could offer stunning views and a sense of remoteness. However, the limited RV camping, the potentially hazardous terrain near the water, and the lack of mention of any services or amenities suggest that this campground is best suited for experienced campers who are well-prepared for a more primitive and self-sufficient outdoor experience.

Before planning a trip to Sand Mesa Campground, local users should consider the following:

  • **Terrain Awareness:** Be prepared for potentially sandy, uneven, and steep terrain, especially near the water access points. Exercise extreme caution when moving around, particularly after dark or while fishing.
  • **Limited RV Camping:** If you plan to camp in an RV, be aware that there may be very few or no designated RV sites. Inquire about suitability and availability beforehand.
  • **Lack of Amenities:** Do not expect developed facilities such as restrooms, water hookups, or picnic tables based on the current information. Plan to be self-sufficient and bring all necessary supplies.
  • **Fishing Potential:** If fishing is your primary interest, the deep water access could be a significant advantage. However, always prioritize safety while fishing near the mesa edges.
  • **Adventure Level:** This campground seems geared towards those seeking a more rugged and less conventional camping experience. If you prefer campgrounds with more amenities and easier terrain, Sand Mesa might not be the best fit.

In conclusion, Sand Mesa Campground in the Wind River Reservation offers a unique camping and fishing opportunity characterized by its mesa topography and direct access to deep water. While the potential for fishing and the adventurous environment might appeal to some local users, it's essential to be aware of the potentially challenging terrain and the limited information suggesting a lack of developed amenities and limited RV camping. For experienced and well-prepared campers and anglers seeking a more primitive and adventurous "camping near me" experience, Sand Mesa Campground could be a destination worth considering, with a strong emphasis on safety and self-sufficiency.
