Schaefer Creek Campground Introduce
Looking for "camping near me" in the Leavenworth, Washington area that offers a more secluded and natural experience? Schaefer Creek Campground, located off a 4-mile dirt road near Leavenworth, WA 98826, USA (specific address not provided), might be the destination you're seeking. For inquiries, you can contact the managing authority, likely the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, at (509) 664-9200 or +1 509-664-9200.
Based on the available camper reviews, Schaefer Creek Campground boasts an "awesome location" situated in a picturesque "forested valley between two cliff faces." This description paints a vivid picture of a naturally enclosed and scenic environment, offering a sense of immersion in the wilderness. The topography suggests potential for dramatic views and a feeling of being somewhat sheltered by the surrounding landscape. This unique setting is a significant draw for those seeking a more intimate connection with nature during their camping trip.
One reviewer had a particularly positive experience, noting that the managing company was "nice and polite." This suggests that the staff or authorities responsible for the campground are helpful and contribute to a positive visitor experience. This reviewer also mentioned being "lucky enough to have the whole campground to myself," estimating the size to be between four to seven spots (they were unsure of the exact number). This small size indicates that Schaefer Creek Campground is likely a relatively intimate camping area, which could appeal to those seeking a quieter and less crowded experience. The limited number of sites also suggests that availability might be a factor, especially during peak camping seasons.
The presence of a river is another key feature of Schaefer Creek Campground. The reviewer describes the river as "clear but cold," which is typical of mountain rivers fed by snowmelt or springs. While the clarity is appealing, the coldness might be a consideration for those planning water-based activities. Access to the river, according to the reviewer, often requires going down a "steep hill," which might pose a challenge for some individuals, particularly those with mobility issues or carrying equipment. However, despite this access challenge, the reviewer still rated their experience five stars, indicating that the overall appeal of the location outweighed this difficulty.
In contrast to the overwhelmingly positive review, another camper offered a more neutral assessment, describing it as an "OK campground." This suggests that while the location might have its merits, it might not be exceptional for all visitors or might lack certain amenities that some campers consider essential. This more reserved opinion highlights the subjective nature of campground experiences and the importance of considering various factors when making a decision.
A crucial piece of information from the second review is that accessing Schaefer Creek Campground requires driving "4 miles of dirt road." This is an important consideration for potential visitors, as it can impact the type of vehicle that is suitable for the journey and the overall travel time. Driving on unpaved roads can be slower and potentially rougher than paved roads, and it might also lead to a dustier experience. Campers should ensure their vehicles are capable of handling such conditions and be prepared for a potentially dusty drive. It would also be wise to inquire about the condition of the dirt road, especially after periods of heavy rain or snowmelt, by contacting the managing authority.
Given the limited number of reviews, detailed information about services and features is scarce. The mention of picnic tables in the positive review suggests that at least this basic amenity is available at some or all of the campsites. However, there is no information provided about restroom facilities (e.g., vault toilets, flush toilets), water sources (potable or otherwise), fire pits or designated cooking areas, trash disposal, or other common campground amenities. Campers should be prepared for a potentially primitive camping experience and bring all necessary supplies, including water, cooking equipment, and waste disposal bags, unless specific amenities are confirmed by contacting the managing authority.
Similarly, no promotional information, such as camping fees, reservation policies, or any special offers, is included in the available reviews. Schaefer Creek Campground is likely managed by the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, given the phone number provided. Therefore, to obtain information on fees, whether reservations are required or if it operates on a first-come-first-served basis (which aligns with the positive reviewer's experience of having the whole campground to themselves, suggesting it might be smaller and possibly first-come-first-served), any specific regulations for the campground, and the current condition of the 4-mile dirt access road, it is essential to contact the National Forest Service directly at the provided phone number.
In conclusion, Schaefer Creek Campground near Leavenworth, WA, offers a potentially stunning and secluded camping experience nestled in a forested valley between cliff faces, with access to a clear but cold river. The small size of the campground (likely four to seven sites) may appeal to those seeking a quieter retreat. However, accessing the campground requires a 4-mile drive on a dirt road, which is an important factor to consider. While one reviewer had an overwhelmingly positive experience, another described it as just "OK," suggesting that individual experiences may vary. Information on specific amenities beyond picnic tables is lacking, and details regarding fees and reservations should be obtained by contacting the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest directly. Potential visitors should weigh the allure of the scenic location and the possibility of solitude against the potential challenges of the access road and the uncertainty of available amenities.

Awesome location in a forested valley between to cliff faces. The managing company was nice and polite. I've been lucky enough to have the whole campground to my self (4 to 7 spots... I forget). Love it. The river is clear but cold and you gotta go down a steep hill in most places. Still 5 stars
