Shark River Chickee Introduce
For those in Florida and beyond seeking an unparalleled "camping near me" adventure, the Shark River Chickee offers a truly unique experience within the vast and wild landscape of the Florida Everglades. Located somewhere within the Florida, USA expanse of this natural wonder, the Shark River Chickee provides an elevated camping platform, known locally as a "chickee," offering a distinct way to immerse oneself in the Everglades ecosystem. This type of camping is particularly suited for boaters and those looking for a more rugged and direct connection with the natural environment.
Based on feedback from adventurous travelers, the Shark River Chickee features a new aluminum design, which has been noted for its sturdiness, offering an improvement over traditional wooden structures. This suggests a focus on durability and safety for campers utilizing the platform. However, one camper did encounter a minor issue with hammock straps sliding down the aluminum posts, which is something to consider for those planning to use hammocks for sleeping or relaxation. This highlights the importance of having adaptable gear for this unique camping structure.
The location of the Shark River Chickee is described as "not bad," suggesting a balance between accessibility to some areas of interest and a degree of remoteness inherent to Everglades camping. While one reviewer noted that the specific location wasn't as aesthetically beautiful as some other parts of the Everglades, beauty is subjective and often secondary to the unique experience of camping directly within this remarkable ecosystem. The proximity to "the action" could imply access to good fishing spots, wildlife viewing areas, or perhaps navigable waterways leading to other parts of the Everglades.
For boat owners, the Shark River Chickee appears to be particularly well-suited. One reviewer specifically mentioned that it "fits a 23’ bay boat perfect," indicating that the structure is designed to accommodate boats of this size alongside the platform. This is a significant advantage for those exploring the Everglades by boat, providing a designated and convenient place to dock overnight and establish camp. The integration of boat access with the chickee design underscores its appeal to the boating community seeking overnight stays within the Everglades waterways.
The overall sentiment from campers is that the Shark River Chickee is a "cool spot to camp." The chickee's location "just off the mangroves" provides an immersive experience within this characteristic Everglades habitat. Mangrove forests are vital to the Everglades ecosystem, serving as nurseries for marine life and providing shelter for various wildlife. Camping amongst them offers a unique opportunity to observe this environment up close. However, as one reviewer astutely points out, being near the mangroves does not deter mosquitoes. This is a crucial consideration for anyone venturing into the Everglades, and effective mosquito repellent is an absolute necessity.
In line with other campsites in the Everglades, the Shark River Chickee is equipped with a port-o-let located on the dock. This basic amenity provides a necessary convenience in a remote environment where traditional restroom facilities are unavailable. Campers should be prepared for this type of basic sanitation and bring any personal hygiene items accordingly.
The dynamic nature of the waterways around the Shark River Chickee is also mentioned, with the current potentially building up "pretty good" at this spot. This is important information for boaters to be aware of when docking and securing their vessels. Additionally, the chickee does not block all wind, which could be a factor in choosing sleeping arrangements and securing gear, especially during potentially breezy conditions.
Despite these environmental factors, the Shark River Chickee is highlighted as a "great spot to make camp and do a little fishing." The Everglades are renowned for their diverse fish populations, and camping directly on the water offers unparalleled access for anglers. Waking up and being able to fish right from the vicinity of your campsite is a significant draw for those interested in fishing the Everglades' unique waters.
Given the limited information available, specific services or additional features beyond the chickee structure and the port-o-let are not mentioned. Campers should likely be self-sufficient, bringing all necessary camping gear, including shelter (if not relying solely on hammocks), cooking equipment, water, food, and safety supplies. Information regarding permits, reservations, and specific regulations for camping on chickees in the Everglades would be essential for anyone planning a trip to the Shark River Chickee.
Promotional information is absent from the provided reviews. However, the unique nature of chickee camping itself serves as a significant draw for adventurous individuals seeking an authentic Everglades experience. The opportunity to camp directly over the water, surrounded by mangroves, and with direct boat access and fishing opportunities, is a unique offering that differentiates the Shark River Chickee from more traditional campgrounds. For local users in Florida looking for a truly immersive and wild "camping near me" adventure, the Shark River Chickee provides a gateway to the heart of the Everglades backcountry.
In conclusion, the Shark River Chickee offers a distinctive and rugged camping experience within the Florida Everglades. Its sturdy aluminum construction and direct water access make it particularly appealing to boaters and anglers. While the environment presents challenges such as mosquitoes and potentially strong currents, the opportunity to camp amongst the mangroves and enjoy the unique ecosystem of the Everglades is a significant draw. For those seeking an adventurous and unconventional "camping near me" option in Florida, the Shark River Chickee promises an unforgettable backcountry experience.

Shark River Chickee Reviews
The new aluminum chickee design was more sturdy than its wood counterparts. Only possible issue we ran into was our hammock straps sliding down the aluminum posts. Location wasn’t bad, somewhat close to the action but wasn’t as beautiful as some.Fits a 23’ bay boat perfect.
May 28, 2024 · William McDonoughCool spot to camp. The chickee is just off the mangroves, but that doesn't deter the mosquitoes. As with all other campsites in the everglades, this has a port-o-let on the doc (see pic). Current can build up pretty good at this spot and it doesn't block all wind. Great spot to make camp and do a little fishing.
