Roberts River Chickee Introduce
For adventurous individuals in Florida and those seeking an authentic and remote "camping near me" experience, Roberts River Chickee offers a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the wilderness of the Florida Everglades. Located within the vast expanse of Florida, USA, this chickee, an elevated camping platform, provides a secluded base for exploring the backcountry waterways. Access to Roberts River Chickee typically requires a significant journey, either by boat or a lengthy paddle, promising a true escape from civilization.
One notable advantage of the Roberts River Chickee, as highlighted by a December 2017 review, is the unexpected availability of cellular service. A camper reported being able to receive and send messages and even upload photos using AT&T, particularly when anchored slightly north at the mouth of a cutoff near the chickee. This connectivity, while perhaps not guaranteed, can be a significant benefit for safety and staying in touch, especially in a remote environment like the Everglades backcountry.
The location of the Roberts River Chickee offers a prime vantage point for witnessing the natural beauty of the Everglades. One reviewer, in February 2019, noted that the view from the chickee is directly to the west. This suggests the potential for spectacular sunset views over the Everglades landscape, adding a magical element to the camping experience.
Interestingly, this chickee seems to be somewhat "underrated," as suggested by a reviewer's interaction with the ranger station. The rangers apparently found it a bit unusual that the campers had chosen to stay at Roberts River Chickee. This might imply that it is a less frequently visited site, potentially offering an even greater sense of solitude and remoteness for those who venture there.
For those considering paddling to Roberts River Chickee, one reviewer shared their experience of a "good full day trek," taking approximately 7 hours of paddling from the start of the Hell's Bay Trail. This provides valuable insight into the commitment required to reach this particular chickee, emphasizing its backcountry nature and suitability for those seeking a more challenging and immersive Everglades experience. The journey itself offers opportunities for wildlife encounters, as the reviewer reported seeing dolphins and many shore birds along the way, highlighting the rich biodiversity of the area.
A crucial piece of information for potential campers at Roberts River Chickee is the unique surface of the platform. Unlike other chickees, which may have wooden decking, this one features a "gridded composite decking." While this design likely offers durability, the reviewer noted that it was "uncomfortable to sit or walk on with bare feet." This is an important consideration for packing and planning, suggesting that bringing footwear suitable for use on the platform is advisable for comfort.
Given that Roberts River Chickee is located in the Everglades backcountry and accessible primarily by boat or a long paddle, the environment is characterized by the unique wetland ecosystem of this region. Expect to be surrounded by water, potentially with mangrove forests or other types of Everglades vegetation in the vicinity. Wildlife is abundant, including various bird species, fish, and potentially alligators and other reptiles. The sounds of nature will likely be the dominant soundtrack, offering a stark contrast to urban environments.
In terms of services and features, chickee camping in the Everglades typically involves very basic amenities. Roberts River Chickee, being a remote platform, likely offers just the elevated platform itself for pitching a tent or sleeping under the stars. Campers are generally expected to be entirely self-sufficient, bringing all necessary gear, including shelter, sleeping equipment, cooking supplies, water, food, navigation tools, and insect repellent (essential in the Everglades). Sanitation facilities might be limited to a portable toilet if provided at all, and campers should be prepared to handle waste responsibly according to Leave No Trace principles.
Promotional information is not available in the provided reviews. However, the inherent appeal of Roberts River Chickee lies in its remoteness and the opportunity for a truly wild Everglades experience. The potential for cellular service in the area could be considered an unexpected bonus for some. The western-facing view promises beautiful sunsets, and the journey to reach the chickee offers excellent chances for wildlife viewing. For those seeking a paddling or boating adventure that culminates in a secluded overnight stay in the heart of the Everglades, Roberts River Chickee presents a unique and rewarding option.
Before planning a trip to Roberts River Chickee, it is crucial to obtain detailed information from the National Park Service or relevant authorities regarding permits, reservations, specific location details, water conditions, potential hazards, and any regulations for backcountry camping in the Everglades. Understanding the challenges and rewards of this type of camping is essential for a safe and enjoyable experience. The information about the platform surface being uncomfortable for bare feet is a practical tip to keep in mind when preparing for the trip.
In conclusion, Roberts River Chickee offers a distinctive and remote "camping near me" opportunity for those willing to undertake the journey into the Everglades backcountry. Accessible by boat or a significant paddle from areas like the Hell's Bay Trail, it provides a secluded platform with potential cellular service and beautiful western views. While the platform surface requires footwear, the chance to see dolphins and shore birds during the approach and to camp in the heart of this unique ecosystem makes Roberts River Chickee a compelling choice for adventurous nature enthusiasts seeking an authentic Everglades experience.

Roberts River Chickee Reviews
Dec 2017. Great spot. I actually anchored a little north at the mouth of the cutoff and pitched camp. I pulled my phone out to double check my location and all my messages from the last 10 days started downloading. So I was able to send a few messages and photos, and upload my facebook pics. AT&T pulling in the signal!02-19, sitting on chickee the view is due west.
Feb 20, 2019 · Eric ColleyThis chickee seems underated in that folks at the ranger station thought it was a little odd we were staying there. It was about a 7 hour paddle from the start of Hells Bay Trail, so good full day trek. We saw dolphins and many shore birds. One thing to note is the surface of the platform is a gridded composite decking, different from other chickees, and it was uncomfortable to sit or walk on with bare feet.
Jan 19, 2022 · Corie HlavatyNice sunset. Horrible Mosquitos. 2 platforms separated by an outhouse. Only go here when bugs are under control.
Jun 24, 2024 · Ken AlvarezFun time. Nice place well maintained
Dec 05, 2022 · brandon beersLots of room. double dock style, so two groups can be here at the same time.
