Had a fabulous time horse camping for four days with a couple of friends and four horses. I hadn't camped there since the early 90s, so this was a blast. It was actually quite busy in the camp as there were probably six others in there at the same time. I liked that the Rangers came through once or twice. There are Porta Potty's as well. Trails were in pretty good condition. I feel they were better than two years ago when I came in for a day trip. You can tell considerable work has been done in Lost Silvermine. It is appreciated!! A few things to note: there are only about five sites that can accommodate larger rigs, mine was 26' and my friend was 27'. It was tight getting into the site. Some of the renovations didn't leave much room for a safe horse paddock (too many rocks or cut down brush). You could definitely put your rig on one site and horses on another fairly close by. Not ideal but doable. With the new, locked gate, it does not appear that we can pull through anymore, so you are either pulling in or backing into the site. The biggest challenge is that the water pump didn't work. We attempted it two or three times to no avail. It did not appear we could prime it with water in any way without taking the cover off. We ended up just having water brought in (we brought some and lucky to have had the ability to get more). For now, plan to bring water for you and your horses. If the pump does work, it is only good for horses.Enjoy the camp!! - Brie Messier

Silvermine Horse Campsite Introduce

For local residents in Connecticut and surrounding areas who are passionate about horses and seeking a distinctive "camping near me" experience, Silvermine Horse Campsite near Hampton, CT, offers a specialized opportunity to camp with their equine companions. This campground caters specifically to equestrian campers, providing access to horse trails and basic amenities to accommodate both riders and their horses. If you're looking for a campground where you can combine your love for camping with the joy of riding and spending quality time with your horses, Silvermine Horse Campsite might be the perfect destination for your next adventure.

The environment surrounding Silvermine Horse Campsite in Hampton, CT, is likely characterized by the rural landscapes of eastern Connecticut, featuring woodlands and trails suitable for horseback riding. The reviews indicate that the trails are a significant feature of this campground, with one camper noting that they were in "pretty good condition" and even better than they were a couple of years prior. Another reviewer described the trails as "fabulous for riding" with "lots of safe areas to canter/gallup your horses," highlighting the quality and suitability of the terrain for equestrian activities. This focus on riding trails makes Silvermine a unique "camping near me" option for horse owners.

In terms of services, Silvermine Horse Campsite offers basic amenities to support camping. The presence of "Porta Potty's" indicates that restroom facilities are available, albeit not flush toilets. The fact that "Rangers came through once or twice" suggests a level of oversight and security within the campground, which can be reassuring for campers. However, a significant issue highlighted in the reviews is the unreliable water pump. Multiple attempts to use it were unsuccessful, and it appears that priming it is not easily done. Importantly, even if the pump were working, it is noted to be "only good for horses," meaning campers need to bring their own potable water. This lack of reliable water for both humans and horses is a critical service consideration for anyone planning to camp at Silvermine.

The features of Silvermine Horse Campsite are primarily geared towards accommodating equestrian campers. The availability of horse trails is the most prominent feature, offering riders the opportunity to explore the Connecticut countryside with their horses. The campground also provides campsites, although the reviews suggest some limitations. Only "about five sites that can accommodate larger rigs" (26-27 feet), and even accessing these can be "tight." Furthermore, renovations have reportedly resulted in less-than-ideal conditions for creating safe horse paddocks on some sites due to "too many rocks or cut down brush." While it is possible to park your rig on one site and keep horses on a nearby one, this arrangement is described as "not ideal but doable." The recent installation of a "new, locked gate" has also changed the access, eliminating the ability to pull through, requiring either pulling in or backing into campsites.

Promotional information is not explicitly provided in the reviews. However, the positive feedback regarding the quality of the riding trails can be seen as a strong selling point for equestrian enthusiasts. The fact that one camper, who hadn't camped there in decades, had a "fabulous time" and found it to be a "blast" suggests a positive overall experience despite some of the noted challenges. The appreciation expressed for the "considerable work" done in "Lost Silvermine" (presumably a section of the area) also indicates ongoing efforts to improve the campsite. For local users specifically seeking "camping near me" that caters to horses, the availability of these trails is the primary draw.

For local users considering Silvermine Horse Campsite for their "camping near me" needs, it's crucial to be aware of the limitations and challenges mentioned in the reviews. Campers with larger RVs should anticipate potentially tight maneuvering and limited site availability. The unreliable water pump necessitates bringing an adequate supply of water for both themselves and their horses. The suboptimal conditions for creating horse paddocks on some sites might require creative solutions for safely containing horses. The change in gate access also needs to be considered when planning arrival and departure.

One reviewer expressed a negative opinion, stating that "most of the campsites are to cramped for large rigs" and that "most of the trees are gone making it hard to highline your horses." This perspective highlights a potential lack of shade and limited options for traditional horse tethering methods on some sites. However, this same reviewer did acknowledge that "the trails are fabulous for riding," reinforcing the primary appeal of the campground for equestrians.

Despite the mixed feedback regarding campsite size and amenities, the consistent praise for the riding trails suggests that Silvermine Horse Campsite fulfills its core purpose of providing access to quality equestrian trails. For local horse owners who prioritize riding during their camping trips, this feature might outweigh some of the inconveniences related to campsite conditions and water availability. The presence of rangers offers a sense of security, and the basic restroom facilities meet a fundamental need.

In conclusion, Silvermine Horse Campsite near Hampton, CT, offers a unique "camping near me" experience tailored to equestrian campers. The campground's primary feature is its "fabulous" network of riding trails, providing ample opportunities for horseback riding. However, prospective campers should be aware of the limited number of sites suitable for larger RVs, potentially tight access to sites, less-than-ideal conditions for horse paddocks on some sites, the change in gate access, and the unreliable water pump, requiring campers to bring their own water. While opinions on the campsite conditions vary, the quality of the trails remains a consistent positive, making Silvermine a worthwhile option for local horse enthusiasts looking to combine camping with their passion for riding.
