Slide Creek Campground

NF-6001, Prairie City, OR 97869, USA

4.0
Smaller camp with (x3)* sites in close proximity to Slide Creek as it merges with Strawberry Creek on the camps Eastern boundary. It is ringed by mountain tops that comprise the Strawberry Mtn. Wilderness with wonderful back country trails and climbing - scrambles (safety first!) with endless vistas. As noted, Slide Creek Camp has (x3)* designated camp sites - The first is a large area with room to park several cars and pitch a half dozen tents. The 2nd is secluded, which shares parking with the 3rd site nestled between the Slide Creek Trail and it's namesake that flows past the campsite.*We found, that the area might not accomodate a large number of vehicles, but there are more places to pitch a tent or string up hammocks, than the camp ground suggests.Worth noting:1. Access - Road (unpaved, perfect for car camping)2. Fees - None3. Reservations - None4. Parking - Limited5. Noise Level - Quiet when compared to a busy weekend further up the road at Strawberry Lake Campground6. Restrooms - Yes (Non-ADA, Older model out house ... newer ADA pot toilets are up at Strawberry Lake. Hopefully, it'll be replaced with an upgraded structure soon enough. In the meantime, it'll do just fine).7. Tap Water - None! go to Strawberry Lake Campground.8. Electricity - None, but open interstitial space between trees allow for solar charging of gear. - Michael Rudis

Slide Creek Campground Introduce

Calling all nature enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers in the local area! Are you searching for the perfect "camping near me" experience that combines breathtaking scenery with a peaceful atmosphere? Look no further than Slide Creek Campground, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness near Prairie City, Oregon. While recent updates indicate a shift in its primary use, Slide Creek Campground still holds appeal for certain types of campers.

Located at NF-6001, Prairie City, OR 97869, USA, Slide Creek Campground boasts a picturesque setting where Slide Creek gracefully merges with Strawberry Creek along its eastern boundary. Imagine waking up to the soothing sounds of flowing water and being surrounded by the majestic mountain tops that define the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness. This location offers more than just a place to set up camp; it's a gateway to a world of natural wonders, including wonderful backcountry trails perfect for hiking and challenging climbs and scrambles for the more adventurous (always prioritize safety!). The endless vistas from these heights are truly unforgettable, offering panoramic views of the stunning Oregon landscape.

Based on recent information, Slide Creek Campground has undergone a transformation. As of 2021, it has become primarily a horse camp. This means that the areas previously ideal for pitching tents are now occupied by horse corrals. Therefore, for those primarily seeking a traditional tent camping experience, Slide Creek Campground may no longer be the most suitable option. However, if you are an equestrian enthusiast looking for a basecamp within the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness, Slide Creek Campground offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in nature with your horses.

Despite the change in its primary use, Slide Creek Campground still retains some of its original characteristics. The access road to the campground is unpaved but well-maintained, making it perfectly suitable for car camping, especially for those with RVs. One of the significant advantages of Slide Creek Campground is that there are currently no fees associated with camping here, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers. It's important to note, however, that reservations are not accepted, so it operates on a first-come, first-served basis.

Parking at Slide Creek Campground is described as limited. While the initial description mentioned three designated campsites, with the first being a larger area capable of accommodating multiple vehicles and tents, and the subsequent two being more secluded with shared parking, the recent transition to a horse camp might further impact vehicle space due to horse trailers. Therefore, if you are planning to visit with an RV, it is advisable to assess the parking situation upon arrival.

In terms of the ambiance, Slide Creek Campground offers a tranquil escape. Reviews consistently highlight its quiet atmosphere, especially when compared to the potentially busier Strawberry Lake Campground located further up the road, particularly on weekends. This peaceful environment allows you to truly relax and connect with nature without the disturbances of a crowded campground.

Regarding amenities, Slide Creek Campground offers basic restroom facilities. There is an older model outhouse available, which is non-ADA compliant. Newer ADA-compliant vault toilets are located at the nearby Strawberry Lake Campground. While the existing facilities at Slide Creek are functional, there are hopes for an upgrade in the future. Crucially, it's important to note that Slide Creek Campground does not have a source of tap water. Campers are advised to bring their own water supply or utilize the facilities at Strawberry Lake Campground for this necessity.

For those relying on electronic devices, Slide Creek Campground does not offer electricity hookups. However, the open interstitial spaces between the trees provide ample opportunity for solar charging of your gear, allowing you to stay connected while enjoying the off-grid experience.

In summary, Slide Creek Campground presents a unique camping opportunity near you. While its recent designation as a horse camp means it may no longer be ideal for traditional tent camping due to the presence of horse corrals, it offers a fantastic base for equestrian activities within the stunning Strawberry Mountain Wilderness. RV campers may still find it a pleasant and free camping option with access to incredible natural beauty and hiking trails. Remember to come prepared with your own water and be mindful of the limited parking. For those seeking a quieter camping experience amidst breathtaking scenery, Slide Creek Campground, despite its recent changes, warrants consideration for your next outdoor adventure. We encourage you to explore the area and discover the tranquility it offers.

For any inquiries or further information, you can contact Slide Creek Campground at (541) 575-3000 or +1 541-575-3000. Please note that the information regarding tent camping may be outdated on some platforms due to the recent change in the campground's primary use. Always check for the most up-to-date information before planning your trip.
