SMOKEY CUBS CAMPGROUND

Leadore, ID 83464, USA

4.0
The name of this campground is actually Smokey Cub, not Canyon Creek. It is clean, peaceful, quiet, and in an incredibly beautiful and unique environment. The bathrooms are really clean and always stocked. There are only 8 designated sites available with fire rings and picnic tables. There is no fee, no reservations, and there are no hookups. Most of the sites are ideal for RV's or trailers, but can also accommodate tents. There is one site specifically designated for tent camping, which is located in the middle of the campground. Here, the creek forks and runs on both sides of the site. Access to this site is obtained by crossing a small bridge from the parking area. The campground is situated right at the base of the Beaverhead mountain range, which provides some amazing scenery. Nestled next to Canyon Creek, the campground is characterized by a riparian area surrounded by sagebrush and numerous tree species, from Douglas Fir and Rocky Mountain Juniper to multiple deciduous hardwood species. This makes for a beautiful camping experience in the autumn season. The location of the campground is next to Highway 29, but it is down and slightly lower than the highway, which helps to shield the wind. A short walk back up to the highway yields beautiful views of the vast sagebrush steppe valley and of the town of Leadore and the Lemhi mountain range to the west. This is a great campground in the fall; however, be prepared for cold, wet weather, and the campground can fill up fast during this time of the year because it is a popular spot with hunters. Summer camping could be quite hot and buggy since there are not many tall trees and there are agricultural fields and cattle grazing allotments nearby. - Zachary Sanchez

Are you searching for "camping near me" in the Leadore, Idaho area that offers a serene and picturesque escape? Look no further than Smokey Cubs Campground, located in Leadore, ID 83464, USA. Please note that while the platform might list it under a different name, the actual name of this location is Smokey Cubs Campground. Based on recent customer reviews, this campground is a clean, peaceful, and quiet spot situated in an incredibly beautiful and unique environment, making it a noteworthy option for those exploring camping opportunities nearby.

One of the standout features of Smokey Cubs Campground is its stunning natural setting. It is nestled right at the base of the majestic Beaverhead mountain range, providing campers with breathtaking scenery right from their campsites. Adjacent to Canyon Creek, the campground is characterized by a lovely riparian area that blends into the surrounding sagebrush steppe. The diverse vegetation includes various tree species, such as Douglas Fir, Rocky Mountain Juniper, and multiple deciduous hardwood trees, creating a visually rich landscape, particularly beautiful during the autumn season.

The campground itself is relatively small, featuring only eight designated campsites. Each of these sites is equipped with a fire ring and a picnic table, providing basic amenities for a comfortable camping experience. Notably, there are no fees to camp at Smokey Cubs Campground, and reservations are not taken, making it a convenient option for spontaneous trips. However, it's important to be aware that there are no hookups available, so it's best suited for those who are self-sufficient or comfortable with more rustic camping.

While most of the eight sites are ideal for RVs or trailers due to their layout, they can also accommodate tents. For tent campers looking for a particularly scenic spot, there is one site specifically designated for tent camping. This unique site is located in the middle of the campground where the creek forks, with water flowing on both sides. Access to this tent-only site is via a charming small bridge from the parking area, offering a truly immersive creekside experience.

The facilities at Smokey Cubs Campground include really clean and consistently stocked bathrooms, which is a significant plus for a free campground. This attention to cleanliness adds to the overall positive experience reported by visitors. The presence of a "cute little creek throughout camp" further enhances the ambiance, providing a soothing natural soundtrack to your stay.

The location of Smokey Cubs Campground offers a blend of natural seclusion and accessibility. It is situated next to Highway 29, but it is positioned down and slightly lower than the highway. This lower elevation helps to shield the campground from the wind, making for a more comfortable environment. A short walk back up to the highway rewards you with beautiful panoramic views of the vast sagebrush steppe valley, as well as the town of Leadore and the Lemhi mountain range to the west.

Smokey Cubs Campground is particularly highlighted as a great destination in the fall. The combination of the beautiful foliage of the hardwood trees and the stunning mountain backdrop creates an exceptional camping experience during this season. However, potential visitors should be prepared for cold, wet weather typical of the fall in this region. Additionally, the campground can fill up quickly during the fall as it is a popular spot with hunters. This popularity underscores its appeal, but also suggests arriving early to secure a site.

The reviews offer a note about summer camping, suggesting it "could be quite hot and buggy" due to the limited number of tall trees providing shade and the proximity to agricultural fields and cattle grazing allotments. Therefore, if you are considering camping here in the summer, it would be wise to come prepared for potentially warm temperatures and insects.

For local users searching for "camping near me" that combines natural beauty with a peaceful atmosphere, and the added bonus of being free, Smokey Cubs Campground in Leadore, ID, is definitely worth considering. Its location at the base of the Beaverhead mountains, alongside Canyon Creek, offers stunning scenery. The clean bathrooms and the presence of fire rings and picnic tables at each of the eight sites add to its appeal. Whether you're an RV enthusiast, a tent camper, or a hunter looking for a convenient base in the fall, Smokey Cubs provides a welcoming environment.

The campground's features include:

  • Free camping with no reservations required.
  • Eight designated campsites with fire rings and picnic tables.
  • Clean and stocked bathrooms.
  • Scenic location at the base of the Beaverhead mountains, next to Canyon Creek.
  • One tent-specific site nestled between a fork in the creek.
  • Accessibility for RVs, trailers, and tents.
  • Beautiful fall scenery, popular with hunters.
  • Proximity to Highway 29 with easy access and scenic views from the highway.

Keep in mind the potential for cold, wet weather in the fall and hot, buggy conditions in the summer. Despite these seasonal considerations, the overwhelmingly positive feedback regarding its cleanliness, peacefulness, and beautiful environment makes Smokey Cubs Campground a hidden gem for those seeking a natural retreat in the Leadore area. If you're looking for a free "camping near me" option with stunning scenery and a tranquil ambiance, Smokey Cubs Campground awaits your visit.
