Snake Creek Campground Introduce
For local residents seeking "camping near me" in the Cookson, Oklahoma area, Snake Creek Campground, located at RT 1 BOX 259, Cookson, OK 74427, USA, offers a camping option with reported friendly staff and a sense of security. You can reach them at (918) 487-5252 or their mobile number, +1 918-487-5252, for inquiries and reservations. Based on recent customer reviews, while the staff is appreciated and the campground appears to be monitored, potential visitors should be aware of some maintenance concerns regarding the grass and the presence of ants.
One of the positive aspects highlighted in the reviews is the friendliness of the staff. One reviewer stated, "Overall, we had a good trip. The staff is very nice." This suggests that local users can expect a welcoming and helpful interaction with the campground personnel, which can significantly contribute to a positive camping experience. Friendly staff can provide assistance, answer questions, and contribute to a pleasant atmosphere within the campground.
However, one reviewer also pointed out a significant maintenance issue concerning the grass, noting that "The grass needs maintenance and is over run with sand burrs." This is a crucial piece of information for local users, especially those planning to bring pets. The reviewer explicitly mentioned that the sand burrs made it "a painful experience for our dog" and also caused discomfort for humans, requiring them to pick out "dozens of stickers" from their fingertips. Based on this experience, the reviewer advised, "Stay off the grass if you don’t have shoes and keep your dogs in the concrete." This suggests that while there might be concrete areas within the campground, the grassy areas could pose a hazard due to the prevalence of sand burrs.
Another reviewer echoed a similar sentiment regarding insect issues, stating, "Good little spot to stop alot of ants alot 😔 but otherwise good." This indicates that the presence of a significant number of ants is another factor that local users might encounter at Snake Creek Campground. While ants are a common occurrence in outdoor settings, a large infestation could be bothersome for campers, particularly when it comes to food storage and general comfort at the campsite.
On a more positive note, the second reviewer also mentioned seeing "the park ranger and others driving by all weekend," which suggests a level of security and supervision within the campground. They concluded that the "Place is taken care of," which, despite the ant issue, implies that the campground management is present and attentive to the overall upkeep and safety of the area. This could provide a sense of security for local users and indicate that efforts are being made to maintain the campground.
Considering the platform category "camping near me," Snake Creek Campground offers a location in Cookson, Oklahoma, with friendly staff and a visible security presence. However, local users should be prepared for potential issues related to grass maintenance, specifically the presence of sand burrs, and a significant number of ants at the campsites. These environmental factors could impact the overall comfort and enjoyment of the camping experience, especially for those with pets or who plan to spend a lot of time on grassy areas.
Based on the available reviews, the key aspects of Snake Creek Campground include:
- Friendly and helpful staff who contribute to a positive atmosphere.
- Potential issues with grass maintenance, including an overabundance of sand burrs that can be painful for pets and humans.
- A significant presence of ants at the campsites.
- Visible park ranger and other personnel driving by, suggesting a level of security and monitoring of the campground.
- An overall impression of the place being "taken care of" despite the noted issues.
- Located in Cookson, Oklahoma, potentially offering access to local attractions or natural areas (though these are not specified in the reviews).
For local users considering Snake Creek Campground for their next "camping near me" trip, it is advisable to inquire directly with the campground management about the current conditions of the grassy areas and any measures being taken to address the ant problem. Asking about specific campsite features, amenities (such as restroom facilities, water hookups, etc., which are not mentioned in the reviews), and any rules or regulations would also be beneficial in making an informed decision.
Given the limited information about the campground's environment beyond the grass issue, services, and features, it is difficult to provide a comprehensive overview. The reviews focus primarily on the staff, the grass condition, and the presence of ants. Local users might find it helpful to seek additional reviews or information from other sources to get a broader understanding of what Snake Creek Campground offers. Inquiring about the proximity to Lake Tenkiller, given the address is the same as Pettit Bay Public Use Area, might also be relevant for those interested in lake activities.
In conclusion, Snake Creek Campground in Cookson, Oklahoma, offers a local camping option with friendly staff and a sense of security. However, potential visitors should be aware of reported issues with grass maintenance (sand burrs) and a significant ant population. It is recommended that local users contact the campground directly at (918) 487-5252 or +1 918-487-5252 to inquire about the current conditions and amenities before making a reservation.

Jun 26, 2023 · Cassandra BainI have been going to this campground since I was little and have always loved it, and still do! Our campsite was nice, shaded and quiet. I will say that the campground is a little more run down and needs upgrading. The restrooms and shower house were very dirty and needs updated horribly! The grass needed mowing and the swimming area walkway was overgrown with weeds.
Jun 16, 2024 · Kaitlyn ThongkhamVery nice campground, clean, well-kept. Regular patrol by park rangers & Cherokee county shireff dept. Met several friendly people. Good use of taxpayers monies.
Aug 05, 2017 · John MarlarNot enough trash cans. Trash was overflowing, women's restroom was reduced to one toilet after second one was clogged-up. Employees didn't provide any guidance upon arrival as to the safeguarding of children or quiet hours.Campsites were overgrown. The experience as a whole would have been better if there had been a sense of anticipation of visitors on Memorial weekend.
